It likely wouldn't have mattered whether or not someone told her yes or no, to be honest. I had a friend with fairly severe PCOS and people kept telling her "yeah, it's great that you were able to transition" when she'd point out that she was, in fact, a woman, even down to her telling someone "I was born female" and getting back "I know, I know, your gender identity is something you're born with, why are you getting so defensive - I'm a trans ally! I'm on your side!"

If people who think they're progressive can be that idiotic, someone who's already anti-trans isn't going to believe "that's a woman" unless they see the birth video clearly showing the genitalia the person was born with. And even then they might try to claim androgen insensitivity or something.

I had to look up PCOS, but assuming these people were given a rudimentary definition, it's bonkers to me that they would confuse it with something related to being transgendered.

She literally could not get the words out, sadly. Like, she'd start saying "I have a medical condition called" and get cut off with "yes, I know, it's so good that it's not treated as a mental illness anymore".

I believe "listen, fuckwads" were the first two words of the sentence that finally got the people involved to shut up.

It's just breaking through to the public. It needs some time because it's not widely understood by most people, and you have places like the ultra-left tumblr-ites who just bog the issue down with special snowflake-isms by creating things which do not exist and trying to glue their fanfiction to the psychological/medical canon. So there's frankly a lot of obfuscation to the issue on the internet, which makes looking up quantifiable information difficult for people 30+.

How did she assume someone was transgendered immediately? People usually disguise that stuff in their attire and voice and makeup and hair and everything else. I certainly have never run my mouth in public if some dude looks like a lady and I'm the most loudmouth offensive person I know. People really start trying to form anti-transgendered policy revolutions and picket lines because of a hunch they had on someone on the other side of the gym? Something don't sound right.

Here I looked up the CNN article I read initially.

""If you have male parts you don't need to be in the women's locker room. I don't care what you are; I don't care if you're gay lesbian, transgender or transvestite. I am uncomfortable with you as a male in my locker room, in my restroom."

Male parts? It sounds like she was swinging a dick around the women's locker room. That is enough to shock many people even if they aren't bigoted or prejudiced just because who expects to see that?

Reading another article from ABC she says "The person was wearing a wig and "a little bit of blush," but was "huge" and appeared "very manly," Cormier told ABC News today. "I just stopped right there in my tracks," she said. "It was a man for sure."

That's kind of uh.. lazy to pass as a woman? It makes me wonder you know? Throwing a wig on with a tap of blush here and there can easily be a front or angle or something and not based on genuine self-identified association with a specific gender.

You know she voiced her concerns in the worst way possible and deserved her criticism and loss of gym membership cuz she had a tantrum over a private business's stated policy she agreed to on some contract somewhere so who cares, but I understand her underlying view if she thinks its a "slippery slope" type rule and have wondered myself what kind of protections the government or businesses have if this ever became a legal issue. Can I put a wig on my head and begin applying to woman only grants? Or lurk around woman bathrooms if I say "I'm a self identified woman." Not trying to disrespect transgendered people, but some trolls or criminals or perverts could abuse our increasing tolerance of non-heteronormative lifestyles. Could you sue for discrimination if you are denied some sort of service intended for women, even if you have a penis, but claim to identify as a man? This seems like some Supreme Court worthy bullshit years from now when there is some pre-op trans Rosa Parks who refuses to give up her seat in a woman's bathroom stall. Maybe I am thinking ignorant but there are many years of legal protections that feminists have fought for to obtain equality. Can men like say MRA types begin co-opting all those grants, scholarships, job openings, whatever, that are designed specifically for women? If I was some kind of civil libertarian activist, which I may be becoming but not in a Republican/racist/sexist shill way just constitutional law and civil rights, I'd almost want to engineer a situation to get arrested or denied some kind of right granted to women but not men, to see what the hell the law is, or make people make new laws or something.

Unless there are some examples you guys know of transgendered rights and protections being ruled on in the US legal system? These incidents will begin happening more and more, not less and less, as people begin self-identifying as transgendered, unless there's some kind of government regulations mandating the reversal of genders on birth records or something.. which also sounds unfair or unconstitutional somehow. Gah!

Just so you don't think I'm bigoted, I mean stuff like http://www.scholarshipsforwomen.net/government

Is any of that going to start sounding sensical in a progressive 21st century society that becomes more accepting of non-traditional gender delineations?

the transperson in question did not change in the locker room, but only used a locker. the bigot is assuming the transperson has male genitalia

you also can't accuse transpeople of being lazy in their presentation. you also don't get to judge the depth of someone's trans persona based on their outward appearance. you're literally judging a book by it's cover here

if you showed up in drag and insincerely claimed to be a woman in order to get rights that transpersons have, you might get away with it for a while, or you'd end up having to explain yourself and it would fall apart pretty quickly

basically what you're saying here is "what's stopping me from putting on a bathing suit and pulling all the coins out of the fountain" or "what's stopping me from claiming all the poo poo at the lost and found is mine" to which the answer is "society expects you not to be a prick for no reason"

I realize the lady was not naked in the locker room, but what if she was? Would you even be allowed to ask a self-identified pre-op transgendered person strutting around a locker room naked in say, some public "government" with a penis hanging out, to leave?

Have transgendered rights been explored in a 14th Amendment context? Cuz I always think of "women's rights" when people argue the equal protection clause but don't know much forward thinking on transgendered rights. Do women even really get to use the 14th Amendment in the first place?

Now I am most certainly for the equal treatment of all people and am not against any specific grants or scholarships or protections for minorities or women or anything, but am becoming intrigued by the entire legal concept of self-identifying as a different gender in our very complicated laws and manners and all that society that has been barely able to handle WOMEN getting an equal voice. Adding transgendered people and the kneejerk bigotry we saw in that story or the generations of assuming "male" and "female" are binary things at birth seem like issues that may be real important soon.

It is difficult for me to even type this stuff without feeling like I come off as an Men's Rights Activist with a raging Rand Paul boner like the Civil Rights Act was unconstitutional, but I am struggling to understand how to properly apply the Civil Rights Act to this.

"In 2012, the EEOC ruled that employment discrimination on the basis of gender identity or transgender status is prohibited under Title VII. The decision held that discrimination on the basis of gender identity qualified as discrimination on the basis of sex whether the discrimination was due to sex stereotyping, discomfort with the fact of an individual's transition, or discrimination due to a perceived change in the individual's sex.[46][47] In 2014, the EEOC initiated two lawsuits against private companies for discrimination on the basis of gender identity, with additional litigation under consideration.[48] As of November 2014, Commissioner Chai Feldblum is making an active effort to increase awareness of Title VII remedies for individuals discriminated on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.[49][50]"

Can I just start wearing a wig and suing the poo poo out of everyone I want for transgendered discrimination if I ever feel entitled to something I didn't get because I didn't merit it? Like who even gets to define gender identity, the individual or the state?

Well that would be a corrupt way of doing it, being all petty and mean. But I'm thinking like a legal challenge to force more concrete definitions to the problems, something civil rights advocacy groups like the ACLU always do. I could probably put on a wig and go down to my county office right now and ask for some women's only resources if something is barred to me by my presupposed male gender and get the ball roling haha!

as queening becomes less of a gay thing you might find more straight men get into it to explore feminine aspects of their persona. think about the long running stereotype of british men happily donning drag in theater, once drag becomes non-sexual and just a performance it's something anyone could do if that's their bag
