The problem description field in our ticketing system is maybe 200 characters long. If you need more room, you can write a note with practically no limit on length (somewhere in the thousands). But instead of taking advantage of that feature, about half of the tickets I get, dispatch tries to write novellas in the problem description field, and they always get cut off before the problem is actually described. They take up all the space with the name of the customer, the hostname, where it is, and how long it's been happening. Half of those have their own fields, and they always take twice as much space as they need to for any of them. So about half the time I have to go to the customer site or call the customer site to get a description of what is happening, so I know what parts even need ordering. I either hear about the job I interviewed for today or next Friday, I'm really hoping I get it. The recruiter said she'd negotiate for me, but I'll even take the same pay rate just to get out of here. I think she's one of those recruiters that gets paid in proportion to the salary the employee gets, though, so she should have my back on this.

We have a CIO and an IT Director who can't agree on anything and are basically having this power struggle and are trying to get the other fired. Meanwhile we can't get decisions made and are falling behind on our goals. One of the Director's projects I've been working on has been stalled for months by the CIO, one reason after another, and action on anything takes days and constant follow ups. I'm torn between "sit back, do nothing, get paid" and "actually accomplish something".

I've been in a similar spot a few times - sometimes it's the best thing in the world and you can take care of all the certifications and training you'd ever want. Sometimes you just sit back and get lazier and lazier. It all depends on where you're at mentally. Everyone knows the opportunity that having no work to do presents, but you have to keep yourself moving. I've succeeded in this sometimes, failed at others.

Anybody have a boss or co-workers who talk *at* you, not to you? I won the sweepstakes. Two out of three of my co-workers are so incredibly narcissistic that they will come over to my cube to just talk about whatever it is they are doing lately, nonstop. There's very little input from me in these "conversations" because even when I do provide my end both of these guys will just continue to talk as if nothing was said by anyone else. No pause, no flinch, no head nod - just continuing to talk. You know how a normal conversation has a pause for a give and take? That doesn't exist here. What's the point? I have been walking this Earth for almost 38 years at this point and have never seen anything like it. Not this bad, anyway.

I think the problem is more that any time you hear about a union, it's negative. You don't hear any of the good things they do, only times like when they save someone from getting fired that doesn't deserved to be saved. The only problem is that in America (no idea about anywhere else) it's the law--the union has to defend everyone in the union, it can't pick and choose. I've no doubt that there are unions and union leaders that are corrupt, dishonest, lazy, whatever. I'd still rather have one on my side than be out there alone. The democrats seem to pay lip service to unions, and the republicans are outright hostile to them--so outside of socialists there aren't really too many union supporters in politics. Again, this is an America-centric view, obviously. And this isn't the thread to discuss it in, would it need its own thread? Is there even any discussion that would happen? First he got passed over as one of the overall team-lead for what he *thinks* is his speciality (but isn't because he's a dilettante) while the actual lead has years of experience doing it. So he lost out on getting the "office" style cube. And then he lost out on moving his shift, because it is literally more important for another member to move to M-F 1st shift because he's another lead we need there during the week. And now, he diagnosed a customer issue that spent about week pin-balling around the different Tiers until being escalated to us and he was incorrect. Not just incorrect, but wildly off-base. He was corrected privately and independently by two different people. He then threw a HUGE hissy-fit. Manager talked him down by basically saying, "you do that, I *will* write you up". A manager who still has not had to issue even an official verbal warning to one person on our team (that I'm aware of). I think he broke today.

When it comes to socializing, hockey is terrible, and Formula 1 is worse. If you want to have a conversation with a human being and not just the internet, follow American football, baseball or basketball. A more important consideration is your TV and movie habits. Did you think Boyhood was the best film you saw last year, followed closely by the Grand Budapest Hotel? Do you prefer the original French version of Les Revenants over the American reboot of The Returned? Do you even know what that question means? If you answered yes to any of these, please immediately change all of your opinions. Instead, watch every superhero movie that comes out, and pick up box sets of Firefly and Stargate SG:1. Incidentally, if you have an opinion on which Death Grips album is their best, don't bother talking about music at work. MC Fruit Stripe fucked around with this message at 08:38 on Mar 15, 2015 |
