I also think I'm way too dumb for this thread because I do not understand the 'randomness' complain. In this gif http://gfycat.com/JadedBothHyrax I knew exactly what I was supposed to do and did it. I did exactly the same path without change for the next two runs and managed to pull a full combo on the level. Could someone please point the 'randomness' part of the game?

Unless we are talking about the bugs and/or the loving doors. Those sure are random.

That looks less fun than the first game. The style of play that brings success in this game's environments and combination of enemy types is different from the first game and less fun to do.

Maybe we should have that from the start. If I tried with the sniper rifle the first guy he flames turns and instant kills you.

That's a great video. I can't get the hang of the Corey roll but you sure can.

Also I just played Hotline Miami 1 again. Outside of the level design, it feels to me a lot like they decreased the bullshit between the games. 2 has much better hit detection against enemies and having a bigger delay on enemy reactions makes a huge difference.

Hit the closest head once when it gets near, then again when it stops moving for a bit. Do the same for the rear head. Lol, "The Ducks".

Nah, weapons in the same class get randomly assigned to enemies when you start the level.

Three? I think? If it's the level where you can switch between rifle and knife all you need to do is pick up ammo from a box located somewhere in the level if you run out of bullets.

The head on the right will come at you and try and bite you with its chainsaw mouth. Avoid it and then hit it. The other head SHOULD* fire three rounds, avoid them and hit it too. I say SHOULD because the first 17 times I tried that boss it just spewed bullet hell amounts of shots at me each time.

So sadly I do have to say I vastly prefer the original over this. 2 just has too many open areas, windows and gun-wielding enemies. It ends up encouraging almost stealthy gameplay, which isn't what HLM should be.

Completed it with 8 hours on the clock.

After you get past the initial surprise that the game plays a lot different to the original and settle into its gameplay style, it becomes a lot more enjoyable and the story beats kept me going. I died a lot and from the second half of the game onwards I was struggling to reach even C+ ranking, but I can say that I was never frustrated enough to not enjoy the time I spent playing it and I really enjoyed the different characters and their gameplay styles. The presentation was slick as ever, the music was once again spectacular and goddamn was that last level something special.

It's worth stating once again that I could easily play several hours more Alex and Ash levels because they allow for the most frenzied, awesome looking sprees in the series. I'd still like to see the levels get tweaked so there aren't so many gently caress-yous, but after you learn to adapt to them you don't really notice them anymore. If you want to see how much this game makes you improve at it, go back and play some of the earlier levels you might have struggled on and see just how simple they are compared to some of the later stuff.

I am counting that Dennaton will continue working on the game after release, given they're releasing the level editor. I hope the tweaks ahead will make HM2 more flexible and have a greater sense of fairplay.

Quoting this because this is the primary reason why people tell those struggling with this or HLM1 to Get Good.

Go back and try older levels. You'll see it for yourself. You get good. Keep playing and you'll get better.

If you just don't like the game for various reasons. Well poo poo son. That's really going to put an end to your eventual skill progression.

I beat the game in three hours, and have a collection of A and S grades. It is a badly designed and badly implemented game. That it is possible to succeed at this game through rote memorization and compensation for the poor design does not make it a well-designed game.

I really enjoy how they made (Late game character) Richter such a sympathetic character. The poo poo he pulls off in HLM1 makes you want to hate him (Even though I actually spared him in that game first time through), but then you get into HLM2 and he's the sweetest mass-murderer you could hope to meet :unsmith: I'm glad he got the only real happy ending in the series. He's accepted his fate and gets to die somewhere sunny with the person who matters in his life.

Eh, I'm doing S- and A+- rank runs at the moment, and I definitely think the level design in a lot of the levels are worse than the first. The worst offenders being Dead ahead and the Hawaiian levels.

HLM1 has less RNG, from what I know. One of the Detective missions, I want to say the second one, has a room where you can just die as soon as you peek out of the door, because a gun dude has moved to a bad position and you can't see him. That is what bugs me with 2 compared to 1, the fact that it's less 'deterministic' if that makes sense. In HLM1 the route I had memorized could carry me on, and I needed much less time in the middle of the 'run' to shift-look away to see, not to mention that the enemies still move while shift-looking.

There's more randomization in HLM2 it seems. I'd say it's less about route memorization and more about luck.

Most of the time I blitzed through with the big things slowing me down being either that one level with three dogs in a hall that attack the moment you get off the elevator, most of Biker's stuff, and mostly just loving up the timing of swings. And also that loving van. It helps that you can almost always see all the way down hallways in 1. I beat most of one in the first few tries except those places I mentioned and the boss fights. Both involve recalling what hosed you last time, but they aren't the same game because of the level design and different choices about gameplay.

At least 2 took the awful boss fights out.

Depending on what you do in the game, (end of the game spoilers) the writer can also get a pretty happy ending. Which sort of makes sense, since he's like the only other character that's not a horrible monster on some level.

Nice. What are you using kb/m or controller? Also are you using default sensitivity? My aim is never that steady. With a controller I feel like I need to keep pressing the aim stick upward constantly. Your reticle moves way less than mine.

A shining example of game level design the first game was not. It's ok to expect that from a game in general, but lets not fool ourselves into thinking HLM was a crown jewel.

HLM1 and 2 are fun games if you can get over some difficult levels. Sometimes it feels like Super Meat Boy where all you're doing is dying until you find the optimal way around a level.

I can't comment on level design since I'm not the person to start or continue that argument. But to those struggling: Don't give up, goons!
