holy poo poo

google had that Chorme book launch video where they said they helped invent USB C

and they staged video where they're writing on a whiteboard, presumably sketching up the designs for USB C

well now it's rumoured that much like micro SIM, apple invented the whole thing and just submitted it to the standards board

http://www.macrumors.com/2015/03/13/apple-invents-usb-c/

if that's true google is full of poo poo and trying to take credit lol

It would be neat if the power adapter was a mag-safe lightning connector. It is kinda hosed if future MacBooks cannot use mag-safe.

USB-C is basically lightning with a different number of configurable pins. you know the USB-IF didn't invent it because it's not a USB port, it's a multi-protocol port.

and lol at google creating anything at that level

well that didn't help FireWire and thunderbolt usage

neglecting of course that they're both more expensive to implement than a similar speed connector so are limited to applications that actually need the DMA

i don't think it's "out of the bag" when there's some random anonymous source on a site that used to publish "x86 macs next month" every month until it finally happened 8 years later.

i know quite literally nothing about this but at the engineering/standards level there's a lot more co-operation between apple/goog than you'd probably expect so both stories could be somewhat true (i.e. the chomebook guys could've been sketching on a whiteboard in a room with some apple dudes)

pretty much any footage of people drawing on a whiteboard is staged, doubly so if it's people with glasses looking at groups of post-its on a wall

as an engineer I always shoot video when I'm writing on a whiteboard in case I'm inventing something that will one day be featured in a corporate ad. it takes a lot of time to set up the lights and get my hair done but I think it's worth it

there are tons and tons of interviews and essays by people who don't work for apple or google talking about usb 3 and the type C connector. if apple handed it over as a complete standard, there was at the very least intense deliberation

every trade rag has been full of this stuff for the last several years

http://www.fysnet.net/blog/2013/12/
http://www.edn.com/design/test-and-measurement/4438870/USB-3-1-testing-part-2--Type-C-cable-assemblies
http://electronicdesign.com/components/interview-te-connectivity-s-egbert-stellinga-discusses-usb-31

the only really scary/stupid thing is that the type C connector was developed around the same time as the vile and terrible usb 3 "micro B" they used on a few android phones. why the gently caress did they not move to type C immediately

why even release the 3.0 spec if you know 3.1 is around the corner?

type c didn't conform to the EU regs yet, but portable hard drive/tablet/mobile phone manufacturers really wanted to release usb 3 devices.

the microusb 3 connector allowed normal EU-approved microusb connectors to connect and power the devices, just not with USB 3.0 extended power/data.

pseudorandom name

you know, when you bring up the EU regs, Apple inventing type C becomes a lot more plausible
