Fatkraken posted:lots of people are guessing awfully high, is this just because all the lower numbers are occupied or do y'all think that the poo poo that went down last year will make the mountain extra crowded/dangerous? Lower numbers are all occupied but also lower permit costs + even more crowding.

I'm in for 21 or 22 (if the 21s are gone), based on the BBC article about slashed permit prices. I expect we're going to be seeing some brand-new, sketchy-as-gently caress expedition groups bringing one or two people up.

Rondette posted:A wealthy Chinese lady summited, with the help of a helicopter.. Yeah this story should not be missed. This lady was originally climbing with Russell Brice, who of course cancelled his expedition when the mountain was shut down. Instead of leaving, she secretly arranged 7 sherpas through another company that denied helping her (thus almost getting Brice banned from Everest,) and chartered 20 chopper flights to camp 2 for supplies. She flies to camp 2, thus only climbing half the mountain, but claims she climbed the whole way and crossed the Icefall several times. So she didn't really climb Everest, but she is a serious competitor for Everest's #1 rich rear end in a top hat.

I'm just saying that if another entire team is wiped out, they'll close the mountain again. You have be hoping for some kind of global warming-generated hyperstorm to destroy the mountain here to go over 20.

If not, give me whatever the lowest (positve) number is, I guess.

Ah, hello thread. The Everest threads have been my favorite since I started lurking the first one, even though it all makes me feel like a total vulture. I only check GBS periodically but I knew I'd cross paths with the 2015 thread eventually and I'm inappropriately delighted now. I think it was hunting for Everest documentaries that led me to one about the Franklin Expedition that was pretty interesting. It featured the mummies of a few guys who died during the expedition that freaked me the gently caress out, so I kinda blame the thread for the months of nightmares that followed. Thanks, Everest thread! And good luck to everyone on the death pool, I guess.

This still bothers me from a few pages back:quote:The group flew into Lhasa, at around 12,000 feet, on Oct. 18. Within a few days, they had driven to base camp at 18,000 feet. Most members of the group suffered some altitude sickness, Elizabeth said. Morgan's became so severe that the group decided to drive him to a lower elevation. No helicopter transport was available. Wait- you fly up to 12000 feet, mill around a few days, then drive a vehicle up to 18000 feet. How could anyone acclimate to that? And it sounds like there was no oxygen available either. That all seems pretty irresponsible. really. Doesn't mean the university is to blame, but it does seem like a really bad plan.

Well all the realistic numbers are taken, so I guess I'll go with a huge avalanche hits Camp 1 and kills 18. I hope the tide is turning against the standard practices that keep getting people killed, and maybe the expedition leaders will take care and only take a reasonable number of qualified climbers up.
