Credit cards work internationally. Surely there is some card that drops the fees on international transactions? In fact I know some banks offer those cards, we've traveled to oz and looked into it but the fees didn't bother me enough.

I am probably missing something here, sorry if I sound dense.

They do, but you get the credit card's not-awesome exchange rate. I also then have to pay it off using funds in the US (or eat a second unfavourable exchange rate paying from my Australian account). I've got USAA and they are comparably quite good (very competitive exchange rate and reimburse for foreign ATM fees), but since I'm aiming to be here long term it's worth the upfront hassle to set something up so I don't get nickle-and-dimed by fees/exchange rates indefinitely, and don't have to leave much money in the US (basically just enough for online shopping + emergency funds in case I need to make an unexpected trip back).

I'm pretty sure "no foreign transaction fees" means you get the spot rate.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I haven't used my credit cards for many overseas purchases due the nature of countries I've traveled in, typically just withdraw cash and spend that.

That'd be good for traveling overseas, but again, I'm planning to stay and live/work here indefinitely, which is why I'd prefer to get a locally-issued CC.

He was vocal about how much he hated the car.

Those Fords are actually pretty nice. And while it's not good with money to vehicle hop constantly, sometimes you can actually make money doing it, and SOMETIMES you can get a better deal on a new vehicle than the same vehicle used due to incentives and timing of purchase.

But I'm going to assume that literally none of that applied to his father.

The list was 38.6k? Tax and title couldn't possibly make the difference so I don't know where you are getting that.

I rent cars constantly and I genuinely like the Focus, as in it's one of my favorites...way superior to a Toyota imo. I think it says a lot about how well Ford Motor Co. Is doing these days that car-whore dads are ditching classic status symbols like BMWs for a Ford.

It also demonstrates how this dumb country has 880billion in car debt.

I was referring to the fact that it's not hard to make an Explorer 50k and that that is insanely retarded (this is with no accessories but otherwise optioned out):

Also very few status conscious folks are ditching BMW, Lexus, etc.

That's pretty pricey. However I think Ford is doing pretty good in the last few years, recall withstanding. They've kinda turned it around and got the people to drop the idiotic platitudes about American made and spend 50k on their explorer, a line which has had a serious uptick in the last couple years.

A similarly equipped BMW would cost you something like 80k, so it is still way cheaper. Also those Explorer Sport ecoboost things are pretty danged fast and very comfortable. New cars in general are going to be "bad with money" but the Ford is at least better value.

I got a foreign credit card with a $15k limit just based on my direct deposit to my local bank. My stateside bank wouldn't increase my limit above $1500 (and my credit record is just fine). Australia isn't as credit-score-obsessed like we are, you may be able to open a card easily with your local bank as long as you have direct-deposit income. The hardest part about international banking as an American is opening any account in the first place, but if you can find a bank to take you then the credit might be an easier matter.

Note you will probably not be allowed to open a brokerage account with a foreign bank due to the FATCA requirements.

That Explorer is pretty sweet though. 3.5L Twin Turbo. Not everyone wants to buy for sheer comfort. I think I'd take a loaded Jeep Grand Cherokee though. My old ludicrously rich boss had a fully loaded one, and it had like built in air bags to adjust the lift for better handling on the street, or better clearance for off road.

Anecdotal but I've driven quite a few Ford vehicles and they've always been reliable for me. 1996 Explorer, 2004 F-150, 2011 Fusion. The worst thing about maintaining them that I've experienced has always been the alternator because Ford alternators are expensive. I've heard far worse about the reliability of luxury cars. My Infiniti constantly had problems for example.

I don't know if this is really bad with money, since I don't know how rich the guy is, but that reminds me of someone. There's an older guy who goes to a couple of the same karaoke joints I go to. He doesn't sing, but he'll hit two or three shows in one night and watch those of us who do sing. He doesn't dress flashily, and he doesn't wear a bunch of bling. He talks about things like the best places to get cheap breakfasts around town. He drives what appears to be a brand-new yellow Lamborghini. I'd be shocked if it's a year old. From talking to him, I don't get the feeling he's exactly tearing up the club scene or anything. Karaoke and breakfast are the only things he ever talks about. I'm pretty sure the guy uses his $400,000 car almost exclusively for going out to listen to people sing karaoke, and grabbing the occasional $5.99 steak and eggs on the way home.

I've watched a ford escort die from transmission troubles, a ford tempo with the same issues. My 1993 for explorer was ok, i spent alot of time coasting it for gas mileage but it pinballed on i90. Sorry man, just not a fan. Spent way too much time in junk yards trying to grab working pieces.

It's been really nice to own a car that hasn't broken down in 6 months.

And if you can't understand why I would say "I don't get why someone would buy a car with X trim level for X price when X trim level is available at a very similar price point..." well maybe you should be less of a sperg.
