Yeah, I think maybe he was trying to make a point of the ECB but the only reason ECB supports the failing countries is because of the Euro, if there is a sinking ship within the AIB I doubt China is willing to save it. Not sure what will happen when the tables turn and China's bubble pops, though.

When push comes to shove everyone is going to look to the IMF/World Bank and China's bank won't even be a factor.

It's useful for propaganda and feeds a US decline narrative that flies in the face of reality but that's about it.

The Euro left certain wealthy member states saddled with the debts of others and the World Bank at least is pretty much explicitly geared towards funding loans for infrastructure projects for impoverished nations. No way getting in bed with the Chinese version of that is a bad idea, given their track record vis-a-vis artificially stimulating their own economy by running up debt with unnecessary infrastructure projects.

Well this happened last week and it's a sign of how uninformed and terrible this thread is that it took a week for someone to get around to posting it.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/the-coming-chinese-crack-up-1425659198

a gay idiot who knows so much more than you that you should probably reevaluate your life and net value to this planet posted:

Despite appearances, China’s political system is badly broken, and nobody knows it better than the Communist Party itself. China’s strongman leader, Xi Jinping, is hoping that a crackdown on dissent and corruption will shore up the party’s rule. He is determined to avoid becoming the Mikhail Gorbachev of China, presiding over the party’s collapse. But instead of being the antithesis of Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Xi may well wind up having the same effect. His despotism is severely stressing China’s system and society—and bringing it closer to a breaking point.

Predicting the demise of authoritarian regimes is a risky business. Few Western experts forecast the collapse of the Soviet Union before it occurred in 1991; the CIA missed it entirely. The downfall of Eastern Europe’s communist states two years earlier was similarly scorned as the wishful thinking of anticommunists—until it happened. The post-Soviet “color revolutions” in Georgia, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan from 2003 to 2005, as well as the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings, all burst forth unanticipated.

The Gate of Heavenly you get your news from poorly copy-pasted editorials on internet comedy forums and I bet you think of yourself as well-informed. ENRAGE

China-watchers have been on high alert for telltale signs of regime decay and decline ever since the regime’s near-death experience in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Since then, several seasoned Sinologists have risked their professional reputations by asserting that the collapse of CCP rule was inevitable. Others were more cautious—myself included. But times change in China, and so must our analyses.

The endgame of Chinese communist rule has now begun, I believe, and it has progressed further than many think. We don’t know what the pathway from now until the end will look like, of course. It will probably be highly unstable and unsettled. But until the system begins to unravel in some obvious way, those inside of it will play along—thus contributing to the facade of stability.

A bunch of drooling morons flailed their keyboards to the effect that this guy is a dumb idiot, but you didn't even know about him so that makes you a double dumb idiot at least.

Another Sinologist then remarked after he left that Shambaugh is generally more rosy on China than most of his peers.

Are there any articles in English media yet about the massive private school scam in Xian province? A lot of older Chinese citizens as well as some expats in Canada were scammed into giving the equivalent of 5 billion US dollars to a school over 20 years, with the understanding that it was an investment that gave them a 15% return per year, and then the founder just disappeared. It's not quite a Bernie Madoff level ponzi-scheme, but close. Elderly people are protesting, but the government has no power to track down the guy and is responding to news reports about the scandal by deleting them.

Here's some pictures of the protestors trying to bring people's attention to what happened:

I took a class from him and he has many decades of various books and such and is really pretty positive, generally - far from alarmist. Although he did take a trip to China in '11 and came back pretty depressed, I think. So he has probably been trending in this direction for a few years. Regardless of that, he's one of those people whose exists in our DC sphere in such a way that his publicly stated opinion indicates more than just his own feelings, I think. So even if you disagree with him it's still good to be aware that that opinion is out there.
