I think Max's problem was that he wanted to be on Survivor to play the game of Survivor, not to actually win it. He cared more about big moves and being a character than what it took to stay in the game.

It was satisfying to see Max go down like that, but I'm still going to miss him. There's a lot of unpleasant personalities this season and even if he and Shirin are terrible at the social game, they're at least having a fun time out there.
