Maybe it's just my backwards rear end brain, but I find it easier to do MM/DD/YYYY because it's super easy to correlate the written out numerical version with the spoken version. MM/DD/YYYY is instantly recognizable to me.

I suggested a professional fix that.

He then proceeded to back into someone because his X5 had the little back up beepy things and this car apparently doesn't. :ughh: I mentioned that it has a backup camera and, failing that, a window . I feel the tech on new cars is lulling already lovely drivers into people not fit to drive...

Serious chat for a second for anyone that cares to chime:

My biggest fear as a father is being too tough on my kid yet being lenient enough not to come across as a anti-fun tyrant, to being enough of a disciplinarian yet not overreact, to instill values and discipline and responsibility yet not seem like a curmudgeon. I put a lot on him to be self sufficient and responsible for his owns wins and losses. I want him to win and lose on his own. He's got great manners. I don't expect him to say yes sir or no sir all the time to me unless the situation warrants it (when he's in trouble, heh). Just because he says "ok" or "yeah" doesn't mean he's being disrespectful to me; but he damned better say it to others. He's a mentally strong, confident kid that doesn't rattle easily - he's never pitched a fit/had a tantrum, has never cried because he lost or didn't get his way. About the only time he even comes close to it is when he's in trouble which is pretty rare. It's generally mild stuff like talking in school or getting up from his seat. The absolute worst trouble he's gotten into (at school) was taking up for another kid that was getting bullied. He popped the bully in the nose and pushed him down. Keep in mind, he was 7 when he did this. I had to meet with the principle about that one. Told the principle flat out that I had raised my kid to stick up for his friends and not be a bully; that he better not start anything, but he better finish it. Thankfully, a teacher that witnessed it vouched for him, which kept us both out of trouble. but we still got the "we cannot condone fighting in our school" talk.

I desperately want him to have fun and have a childhood he'll look back positively and have the memories that go with it. Balancing that with being "Dad" ("be his father, not his friend") is tougher than I ever thought it would be especially when all I want to do is cool and fun stuff with him. Heh.

I don't know. I constantly worry I'm being too tough on him and not letting him stretch his wings so to speak. He gets a ton of love from me. Probably, no doubt, 10-20 times a day, I either tell him I love him or give him a quick hug/squeeze, kiss on the head, a wink, or whatever just to let him know. Give him lots of positive reinforcement and assurance when he does good/right.

Sorry for the E/N stream of consciousness.

Be his friend AND his father. Honestly, I've never understood the whole 'You can't be his friend' stuff. You can be his friend when you are disciplining him too, that assumes that you don't call your friends out on bullshit.

My kid is almost 3, says please and thank you and is extremely polite, and if he does something wrong to someone and is called out, he usually apologizes and rectifies it. He's also getting very agile, has figured out almost all the basic hand tools in my garage and already grasps basic math and is working on the alphabet.

Seriously. My dad is pretty much both friend and father to me. He helps me out if I get in a bind, helps me work on my car / fixes stuff I have zero knowledge about, and at the same time we hang out, fly r/c helis together, and just chat like good friends would in any other situation. Hell, he's also my coworker and is the one who taught me how to operate a backhoe and is going to be teaching me how to weld. Dads can totally be both mentor and best bro.

Also, I always say "yeah" and "ok" to my dad. It's not a disrespectful thing, it's just that our relationship is pretty relaxed so the whole super polite, stiff and curt response thing would just be silly. Hell, he sometimes uses "Ikr" when texting me and it's not uncommon for me to use "aight" sometimes.

That's often when I'd start calling them "sir".

Again, if he's polite, I'd regard expecting him to refer to people as "sir" as being a little... odd. Or old-fashioned. When I was a kid, "Mr/Mrs/Ms/Grand High Vizier [surname]" was what was normally expected when talking to adults, and perfectly polite.

The parents who get it wrong are the ones who just pick one direction and run off blindly (constantly berating for everything done wrong or letting them be incorrigible shits, etc). You can't blindly stick to a set of rules and have them always apply to every single situation in the exact same way.
