If I hadn't known these pictures are of a crapheap town with the worst pollution ever, I'd think it's generally quite pretty (there's some dilapidated buildings but you can find those in any town), and I'd say it's an interesting place to visit. One thing you only rarely see traces of -the USSR did try to make things tolerable for the workers in places like that. All the buildings are painted to try and make it less dreary, IIRC workers in the far north got extra long, free, vacations in warmer places (like, uhm, Crimea), and there was probably an attempt at culture and entertainment.
