It seems like Auckland has lots of shoreline real estate that could be turned into something pretty and grand but everyone fixates on the harbour. I don't see a good outcome here because it's the only port for container ships in Auckland, and Auckland is a relatively big city which is growing rapidly and will presumably need more cargo capacity eventually.

The fact Auckland is a rapidly growing city is probably a good reason as to whether we should complete a review of the future of the Port and if it should even be in the CBD. We were meant to get that review before anything happened with the Port but Len Brown went back on his word and now we're just getting a huge extension to the wharfs that will jutt out even further into the harbour. The Council also got some pretty suss advice about whether it even had a say.

Basically the whole thing has been a fait accompli from day one despite Aucklanders constantly getting told otherwise and we are understandably pissed.

As I understand it from the debate some time ago the argument was that either POAL needs to expand to accomodate growth or all the container shipping business has to start moving to Tauranga. Given that POAL is owned by the ARC it makes economic sense for the region to expand / upgrade the port however people feel that an expansion of the port would be bad because of the environmental and aesthetic impact. Personally I think they should go for it but I'm not sure that's a popular opinion.

I don't think people realise how hosed the housing situation is at the moment in the big cities. Or how much of our future productivity is being locked away in servitude to the banks.

Why can't they expand the Mangere wharf area into a proper decent port? Instant motorway access, not anywhere near the CBD, Mangere residents don't give a poo poo about their beautiful view of the south western being sullied.

Primarily because the Manukau harbour can't support larger ships - it's shallow with a large tidal variation, not enough deep water mooring space and of course, the horribly treacherous sand bar at the harbour entrance, site of NZ's deadliest maritime disaster.

Edit: Largest ship the Manukau can support is around 1000 tonne. Queen mary 2, the biggest ship to dock at POAL, is over 148,000 tonne.

The motorway runs directly over it and the Council has spent a bunch of money putting back in some of the shoreline that industrialization hosed up.

The other issue in the Ports debate is that sealife in the Gulf is basically hosed to the point where no one knows how long it will take to replenish itself or if that will even happen.

Mike Sabin was a v. proactive MP, and even though he's resigned for family reasons his bills are still going strong.

quote:

Mr Sabin's bills have been approved by the National Party caucus for support at first reading should any be drawn from the ballot.

"To me being an MP is not sufficient. You've actually got to look at ways in which you can add value and what I have tried to do is identify where there are gaps, and as backbencher I try to develop policy and the legal framework to achieve change in that area."

The Evidence (Inference from Silence) Amendment Bill is in the name of list MP Alfred Ngaro, and would make controversial changes around the right to silence for crimes committed against children aged under 12 or against a mentally impaired person

Since I'm a millenial and our generation is absolutely massive, I very much look forward to making GBS threads all over my grandkids and their hopes and dreams. Boomers thought too small. We need to cut out the middlemen: just hold up our grandkids at gunpoint and say it's for their own good, and make factories that gently caress the environment directly without any of that production bullshit to slow down the glorious poison. Start wearing capes around the place and laughing wildly for no reason.

Winston is a belligerent old shithead who I can't recall every giving a specific answer about anything other than holding up a sign. The fact he out-waffled a relative newcomer is entirely unsurprising.

I'd rather the guy who actually lives in Northland wins rather than the cynical vile racist who doesn't live in the district, let alone the electorate, and whose party hasn't stood anyone in the seat for two electoral cycles and that we're meant to believe suddenly cares deeply about its future. Regardless of how much of a shambles Osborne's campaign is, at some stage someone has to draw a line under Winston's bullshit and posturing.

If Winston wins, it flips the balance of power in parliament so that the Nats can no longer rely on their pocket ACT MP for support. That means they'll either have to go running to Winston or Dunne, both of whom aren't likely to agree with some of National's shittier plans for the coming years. Whether or not you like the guy, understand the implications that his win will have for parliament.

I do understand it. I also understand that the exact same poo poo that everyone got so wound up about in Epsom is going on here. I also know it's to the benefit of one of the most outspoken racists in New Zealand society. I also remember Winston insisting that human rights should be dished out via referendum during the gay marriage debate. And I also understand that Labour would crawl over broken glass to work with him ahead of the Greens.

I'm just not so blinded by a hatred of National that I'm prepared to overlook some stuff, I guess.

E.g. NZEI were able to successfully lobby various local MPs to help people get claims resolved with that novopay shitstorm a few years ago
