Got my Cleveland. The guns are really amazing but I feel the turrets are far too fragile. More games than not I'll permanently lose one, which is really harsh. It's got lower maneuverability than the Omaha so I'm getting wrecked by BBs more often too.

My turn for a :wtc: game post !

Saw 4 DDs on the enemy team during match loading, I figured I was going to get focused down in a hurry, but then pubbies happened. Loaded AP off the bat, :boom: ammoracked?/magazined? a DD with a 10km out plunging full broadside :wtf:, 2 salvoed another when he tried to torpedo me, then got into a brawl with the Tatsuta. Sank him, got out at about 1/2 health. Took 1 torp to the rear end from the last DD that I wasn't paying enough attention to, I'm down to 1/4th HP (thank $deity  repair was off cool-down), he then cut around an island at about 1/4th HP left. I pre-aimed where I figured he'd appear, vaporized him about 2 seconds after he appeared. For whatever reason DD drivers seem to like to hug islands as much as they can  .

Our torpedoes at the start of the war were sooooo bad. Everyone even remotely interested in US naval combat history probably has an inkling of how bad they were, but I'll supply some details. This all comes from a book I read a year ago, so it might be a little fuzzy.

Everyone knows that US torpedoes failed to actually blow up, which is a pretty huge problem for a torpedo. But why? Well, our torpedoes had two detonators that could be used. The first was magnetic, which would detect when it was near a big metal object ( boat ) and explode. The second option was an impact detonator, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Soon after the war began, skippers found out that the magnetic detonators didn't work for poo poo. They failed. Constantly. Sometimes the torpedoes wouldn't go off at all, and sometimes they'd go off before they were close enough to kill the target. As a result, the US submarine service missed out on significant opportunities.

The submarine captains figured this out, and spread the word that the magnetic warheads were junk. Many of them fell back on the impact detonators...

But the impact detonators were also hosed.

There's a prong-thing that stuck out from the front of the torpedo, so when it struck a solid target, the prong would be pushed in, depress a mechanism, and boom. Sounds simple, right?

Well, the impact detonator was poorly made. If I recall correctly, it was too strong. This meant that when it struck a ship's hull from the 'wrong' angle, it wouldn't generate enough force to depress the explodey bits. The torp would just go 'THUNK' and bounce off harmlessly. This meant that even if you hit a target, there was a good chance your torpedo wouldn't work anyways.

Because this wasn't enough, the torpedo had another problem. It had a gyroscopic navigation system that would keep it running toward the programmed heading. In theory.

In practice, the gyro would mess up. Sometimes this threw the torpedo off target. Sometimes it caused the torpedo to loop back around and hit the goddamned submarine that fired it.

At some point, the skippers start complaining to command that everything about the torpedo is just awful. You'd think they'd fix it right away, right? Nah. They denied it all, stuck their fingers in their ears, and screamed 'lalalala'.

Why? Well. There were a lot of people behind the project that didn't want to admit their super secret awesome torpedo was actually a piece of poo poo. They dragged their feet and ignored the reports of their own officers because they were stubborn, and wanted to save face.

One of the big tests that finally led to them admitting the torpedo was hosed took place in Hawaii. They had a submarine fire a spread of torpedoes at a cliff, the majority of which failed to explode. The warheads also failed to function when dropped from a crane, straight into the ground, from a height of 100 feet.

I haven't noticed, but does the game give some kind of armor thickness rating for this area so we can tell whether or not we even have a chance to pen a higher tier ship with a lower tier ship similar to armor & pen values in WoT?

That plus the areas under the guns, and dealing with knowing armor thickness sis the sort of heuristic thing you pick up.

Also, correction on the torps thing, the impact fuze was too weak and the pin broke if it hit the target dead on, so for a while everyone was trying trick shots to hit at a sharp angle where the fuze would work. Thus the crane failure.

Also, with the gyros, the interim fix they tried was two gyros running, and after an amount of time after firing, if the gyros disagreed it would be assumed it was trying to run in a circle and go boom. Problem is of course that torps occasionally fail to launch, so if that happened and the sub changed course... Welp.

Look in the F1 help overlay. I know holding rmb locks them to the position you're aiming at, and I know there's keyboard commands for that and locking them to an angle from your ship.

If you want Navy related corruption and incompetence, how about the good old USS Indianapolis? Sunk by two torpedoes fired by a submarine, of 1,196 crew, only 317 survived having been floating in the middle of the ocean for 5 days suffering the most shark attacks on humans in history. Their distress signal was ignored by three seperate listening stations (one commander was drunk, one didn't want to be bothered the last thought it was a Japanese trick). The only reason why anyone was rescued was because of a chance encounter with a Catalina (aka the coolest flying boat ever) who decided to disregard regulations and land in the open sea, radio'd a nearby destroyer for assistance and filled the hull with sailors. When they ran out of space inside, they strapped men to the wings (preventing it from flying) and acted as a lifeboat. The heavy cruiser was sent in this direction without escort despite confirmed losses due to submarine attack happening in the area right before it left. To cover it up, the Navy court martialed the commanding officer and he wasn't pardoned until 2000.

Taken from here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_or_nothing_%28armor%29

quote:

"... all of a battleship's armor was concentrated to form an armored "citadel" around the ship's magazine spaces: an armored box of uniform thickness designed to defend against the largest enemy guns.. Save for the turrets, the ammunition hoists, the conning tower and part of the steering gear, nothing in the way of armor protected the remainder of the ship."

What you showed is about right, it would be the citadel.

The Citadel is basically the blue part highlighted on that diagram, it's where they put the armor since that's where all the important bits are, and if you penetrate that armor you're gonna do damage to important stuff.

Thanks to everyone for the clarification on the citadel area. The wording in the OP was a bit confusing as I read it: "That area from the start of the dark blue to right behind the rearmost main turret is the citadel." Are only the turrets in the forward area of the ship considered the "main" turrets?

During a break in exercises in the Aleutians a sailor came back to the ship drunk after leave and decided he wanted to fire one of Willie Dee's big guns. He fired the weapon before anyone could stop him, having no idea where the 5-inch shell would land.
