Quick question: I know you don't have to number all the boxes in the NSW state elecction for upper and lower houses. Is this exhaustive for both, or do party preferences kick in?

Ballot papers for NSW State elections

(Note: rules are different for the federal and local elections)

Lower House - Legislative Assembly - Voting for a representative of your area in the NSW parliament

Always use numbers.

1 You must put a number '1' in the square next to the candidate who is your first choice - the candidate who you want to be elected.
2 Then if you want, you can put a number '2' in the square next to your second choice and a number '3' in the square next to your third choice and so on.
3 It's up to you how many choices you put but you must make sure you put a number '1'

Ballot papers that do not show a number 1 or show more than one number 1 will not be counted.

Upper House Legislative Council - Voting for your representatives in the house of review

Always use numbers.

The Legislative Council ballot paper has a thick black line running across it. There are squares above this line and squares below it. The squares above the line represent the groups of people listed below the line. There are two ways you can fill this ballot paper in.

You can vote for one or more groups by filling in the squares above the line

Or you can vote for the individual candidates by filling in the squares below the line

Voting above the line

If you choose to vote above the line you must put a number '1' in one of the squares above the line.

Putting a '1' in the square above the line is the same as voting for all the candidates listed below that square, in the order they are listed.

That is all you have to do.

But if you want you can show your second choice of group and more choices if you want by putting a number '2' then '3' and so on in the squares above the line.

If you vote above the line you do not have to put numbers in any squares below the line.

Voting Below the Line

If you choose to vote below the line you must put a number '1' in one of the squares below the line. Then you must put the number '2', then the number '3', then '4' then '5' — all the way to number '15'.

You must number at least 15 squares for your vote to be counted. These numbers can be in any squares below the line. You can, of course, put more numbers starting with 16 if you want.

If you vote below the line you do not have to put any numbers in any squares above the line.

Tony Abbott asked why he keeps saying 'stupid things' in fiery ABC interview

March 20, 2015 - 3:46PM Latika Bourke National political reporter

'How come you say so many stupid things?' Tony Abbott is pressed by ABC 774 radio host Jon Faine over his Joseph Goebbels remark during Parliament. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has denied being a bully when asked by an ABC radio host what credibility he has to front an anti-bullying conference. Mr Abbott released a video addressed to the "boys and girls of Australia" telling them that as Prime Minister he is behind victims of bullying. "There's no place for bullying on the playground or on the internet," Mr Abbott says in his pre-recorded video. "If you are being bullied I want you to know that I'm behind you, your teachers are behind you and your family is behind you as well," the Prime Minister said. ABC local radio host Jon Faine interviewed Mr Abbott while the Prime Minister was on his way to an anti-bullying conference in Melbourne on Friday morning. "What credibility do you have on bullying - you've been accused of it so often yourself?" Faine asked. "Without foundation, I would say Jon," Mr Abbott replied. "This is where I think our country would benefit from a little bit more fair-mindedness. We are at the moment a somewhat querulous country and I think if we counted our blessings a little more, saw ourselves more in the way the rest of the world sees us, we might have a better public conversation, we might in the end have much more constructive debates."

"You yourself admit you have an aggressive streak - isn't that the core of bullying?" Faine insisted. "Well I'm not so sure I have ever said that in so many words," Mr Abbott responded. "Obviously when I feel strongly about things I argue strongly for them but of the things I've always tried to do is give credit where it's due," he said. Earlier in the often tetchy interview, the ABC radio host asked Mr Abbott why he kept on saying "stupid things" when he is a Rhodes scholar. "Mr Abbott, for a Rhodes scholar, how come you say so many stupid things? 'Lifestyle choices' has enraged Aboriginal community leaders, and yesterday, bringing Goebbels into the Parliament?" Faine put to the Prime Minister. "I withdrew and I apologised and I did it straight away, there was no hesitation. I accept that in the context of history and the way things have developed that was an over-the-top remark and I straight away withdrew and apologised," Mr Abbott responded.

"But why do you have this foot in mouth disease, what's going on?" Faine asked. "All of us from time to time in the heat of debate, and you know how heated the Parliament can get, sometimes can go too far," Mr Abbott said. Mr Abbott's comment sparked outrage when Jewish Labor MP Mark Dreyfus was kicked out of Parliament for protesting against the remark. Another Labor Jewish MP Michael Danby stormed out of the House in anger. "At least 11 Labor members of parliament have made a similar reference including one of those who was outraged last night, namely Mark Dreyfus," the Prime Minister noted.

He's not just a Rhodes Scholar he has a BEc and a LLB (Law) From the University of Sydney. What loving cereal box do you have to empty at Sydney Uni to get a BEc and/or a LLB? Seriously the man is beyond cretinous.

Found it!

You will never change the values that are ours.

Thanks so much.

It is understood the baby was grabbed by the ankles and swung at a man during the brawl on Smith St, Alice Springs, about 9.45am yesterday.

SOCIAL ENGINEERING SHOCKER:
Not content with making it harder for working Aussie families with their GST policy, the Australian Democrats have launched a new policy making it illegal for Australians to have children without complying to strict licensing laws.

Party spokesperson Screaming Idiot noted the policy would be targeted at anyone he didn't specifically like. "I just hate poor people," said Mr Idiot, before casually spending another $10 on an internet forum.

In a press conference shortly afterwards NRETA said "this is the kind of big government nanny state proposal we have come to expect from The Greens." When told that it was actually a Dems policy, NRETA said that he would always be willing to work with the Dems to pass policies most Australians are against.

I'd imagine they exhaust because there is no simple, logical way for the preferences to continue.

Does it continue from the last parties preferences, or the first? Or say the person voted for a couple of micro parties first but would prefer the preferences from the greens/labor/lnp (which might be number 3 or 4 but not last). What happens when the parties preference has already been preferenced earlier by the voter? It would be really difficult to interpret voter intention with some sort of hybrid system.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I just figured there would be some sort of party preference for above the line voting in the upper house.

So I voted. Lower House, 1 Greens, 2 Labor, End. Upper House I voted above the line because I didn't want to number the nameless peoples. Green, Cyclists, etc etc, Labor etc etc democrats. I put in enough preferences just in case so that maybe a good smaller party might get a seat.

Did people already forget about him claiming that Labor caused a 'jobs holocaust' last month? The guy is clearly happy to make offensive remarks about his political opponents. Has he been looking at news limited papers for inspiration?
