I've played some matches in a Kongo, and dealt almost no damage in all of them combined. Turns out I can't aim for poo poo with it. :negative:
Need more practice!

By the way, is there a way to reliably switch which ship the game auto locks to? And a way to forcibly keep the lock instead of suddenly switching to a closer ship so the range gets hosed up just as you fire? :argh:

I really need to learn how to shoot battleships. I'm consistently losing, and badly, against BBs lower tier than I am in the Omaha. Both the Kawachi and Myogi are about as accurate as a squirt gun, so being unable to outshoot them is frustrating and I'm probably doing things wrong.

You don't want to get in shooting duels with battleships unless you are also in a battleship.

Kawachi is trash, snake in and out of your max range and keep damaging it, and it isn't going to dodge anything you toss at it. It doesn't even do much damage.

The only thing you're doing wrong is taking on battleships with a cruiser.

Unless you're hitting your torps you shouldn't be fighting them until you get the Cleveland and only if you have backup. 1v1 is a death sentence.

Honestly the Japanese cruiser torps aren't very good against battleships unless you're at a huge advantage somehow. The japanese heavy cruisers kinda suck.

Duly noted.

I managed to do 32k damage to him. A Phoenix and a destroyer I didn't get a good look at were helping him out, too. With all that in mind, 32k damage is actually something I'm not displeased with.

Unless it's much worse than the average pubbie, you can't expect to beat a battleship in your cruiser under any circumstances. I'd favor a halfway decent Myogi over a Cleveland. Shoot at the enemy non battleships and hope your battleships aren't as dumb as theirs.

I unlocked the Cleveland two rounds ago.

I now know the meaning of "exploiting the current meta". It turns. It shoots down planes. It shoots down ships. It shoots... everything. Who needs torpedoes when you can gun down everything at 10km+ while barely thinking?

The enemy of my enemy is my enemy.
The Kawachi has more guns but less maneuverability and speed.
The Myogi is faster and more maneuverable but on top of having less guns it has a weird setup for them: two in back.

The Maneuverability and speed cannot be underestimated. While it's possible to dodge torps in a Kawachi it's going to mostly because whomever launched those torps messed up a bit.
In the Myogi you can dodge most torps no problem with a bit of forethought, perfect training for a Kongo.

Stock Myogi is worse than stock Kawachi though.

The good thing about a myogi is that you still have 2x2 guns firing while trying to run away for an unfavorable encounter. On the other hand, you only have a 1x2 gun when steaming towards something.

When you're steaming towards or away from something it's usually good practice to angle so you can fire all turrets. In fact at all times it's usually good practice to angle so you can just fire all turrets. When layout comes up is when you absolutely have to turn, and I find keeping guns on target is more critical when the enemy has the advantage, in which case I want to be turning away from the enemy thank you very much.

Oh, I know. Don't get me wrong, I do the angling all the time. I'm just making a light hearted joke that the ship seems purpose built to be french in design. That is to say, best firepower when running away.

Edit: also, had another good game in my aoba. I really should take shots of the aftermath screen. Me and a fuso went down one path and no one else followed. Sadly for the enemy team, I know how to be a good escort and screened the fuso from everything. The first victim was a cruiser that I didn't catch. He turned for a broadside on me, missed me but ate a citadel from me. Then he ran aground which gave me a few more shots. The fuso then rounded the corner and finished it. A DD tried next by sneaking around. It didn't work as I dodged all his torps and starting laying into him. More the point, I made him get out of his optimal torp setup by short ranging my own. I got the kill on him. Then we just set about finish going down the area between the islands into the enemy side. As we reached the end, we started to get heavily harrassed by both of the enemy carriers. Sadly for them, I know when to fire my barrage and kept near the fuso so was able to screen against torp bombers. The carriers were running away by then, but I think the fuso got one of the rangers while the other was alive at the end. Both with very reduced number of planes.

Still, great ship. Pretty fast, handles well, a bunch of big and accurate guns. Keep your distance from those pesky destroyers and ruin the days of some cruisers, then shoot battleships. You're fast so make sure you don't get in trouble too fast, stay back a bit and see what the pubbies find first. I'm averaging 50-60k damage per game so far and I'm pretty terrible at the game.

Above water so they might. Bet the firing angles suck and maneuvering to actually fire the things just gets your belt shredded and your citadel filled with love because you always angle your drat belt.

Why? Judging from what I'm reading on the forums, angle-of-penetration is something that was removed since alpha, and it's just pure RNG vs a HP pool. Which is just bonkers to me, but I'll land 100+ AP hits to the citadel area broadside in a match and come out with no actual penetration, then get 4-5 at once when someone's quartering towards me.

Also I completely agree - more guns = better than. With how bad the RNG spread is on firing, going up in shellsize at the expense of half your barrels is always a downgrade. It's why the St.Louis is such an insane little ship.

Even then it makes it a swine to hit you compared to compare number to range, aim to that range and lead. Also, I'm pretty sure armor is still a thing at least to some degree, it may be really underwhelming right now but it's still there. Note that there is also the confusing factor of minor client desyncs, where a ship appears to be behind where it is that can mess over good looking shots.

Wish I had some training rooms to test in.

Recorded a pretty good carrier game. If you don't want to watch 15 minutes of me frantically clicking things and waiting, hilights are an incredible torp spread against some tunnel visioned pubbies at 01:05 (9 hits out of 12 possible), pro torp dodging in one of the slowest ships in the game at 01:40, semi-failed manual spread setup at 05:20 and panic sinking a battleship at 07:05.

Carriers are pretty boring, really. I got to the Independence but I'm not sure if I'm feeling it. You can usually gently caress over a battleship or two but there's just so much waiting involved and you feel so detached from the game.

Well since a lot of skill was ripped out of the game and replaced with RNG, I'm willing to bet that the previously-existing deflection angles are gone as well. Until they put back in practice rooms to test on, there's no real way to tell.

Where I'm currently weak is landing my first salvo on a ship heading directly towards or away from me. I'd love more practice at that, but idiot pubbies are always broadside and the better players don't give me many opportunities to hit them. :)

Edit: I guess everything about the alpha is still locked by the NDA, but people talking about it have been skirting the edges when discussing things that "might" have been in, like DD only areas (shallows), armor and angling being more important than RNG, etc. Being able to control your BB scout plane (even recall it, poo poo. It's nothing but a 5-minute viewrange buff that may RNG be cut short). I guess the previous roadmap (also NDA) publicly released screenshots had things like buoyancy and HP as separate pools in it as well.

The americans just loaded more 50cal brownings which might be effective-ish. But when your counterparts are throwing 2x-4x 20mm cannons, there is a noticeable disparity in power. Those torps are amazing at doing nothing but force engagements to your benefit. As they dodge, they are less focused on the shooting. Or if they are still focused, you are getting cleaner shots. Or in the case of my last game, be so focused on admiring your torp run in a DD to run right into your quad torps.

I agree the torps are very useful. Many a times I'm throwing them at enemies 10k away and 30 seconds later as im dueling with someone else I get the kill notification.

Very useful vs cruiser/cruiser duels as it forces them to dodge and completely fucks their aim and maneuvering.

Plus they do so much damage. We might not have as many guns as the Cleveland but dang they pack a punch
