I feel like most of my problems with hearse AI (and trash but I have a way bigger problem with hearses) could be solved if I could restrict a graveyard or crematorium to only pick up from its local district. They will go all the way across town when there are a half dozen closer crematoriums, leaving bodies down the street.

I think when you start a city, the game randomly decides which service's AI to bork. Sometimes I've had retarded garbage trucks, and sometimes I've had retarded fire trucks. But usually it's garbage and slightly less often it's hearses, 2/3 times it's both.

DLC I would buy in a heartbeat: a Metropolis-style German expressionist mod, complete with Zeppelins and stuff. An Art Deco conversion with deco houses, factories, aerodromes etc. and classic cars. A mod that means I don't need to build a crematorium every two blocks would be good, too - I need 15 of the bloody things for a city of <50,000 at the moment, which is rather ridiculous.

Goodness no, now that wouldn't do at all!
I need to improve my public transportation. Is there a good rule of thumb for how many lines to build per capita? At ~75k population, I've only got around 2,500 riders a week between my bus and metro lines, even with free public transport for the whole city. I have eight major districts, with four each on either side of the main highway. My subway system consists of three lines: a loop on either side of the highway connecting each sides' four districts and one line that just runs between the two circles. It basically looks like this: O-----O. In each district, I have a bus line that runs the circumference of the district and starts and ends adjacent to the metro station.

Are there any glaring flaws in this setup? Do I need more inter-district bus lines? I've never actually lived anywhere with remotely accessible public transportation, so visualizing an effective system is difficult.

It can take your trains a month to get from one end of a city to the other. Keep that in mind.

There's supposed to be a way involving asset naming, but I can't verify it. For my uniques, it automatically generated the thumbnails.

The current deal is you pay 30 dollars on Steam for a game that could easily have gone for 50.

Should be able to get it from here with an extra discount from the code DLG-PACENAYA at checkout. It's a Steam key, of course. (thanks Enhanced Steam addon for telling me that)

That said, when I tried to get a copy from DLgamer a few days back it kept saying my bank refused to allow my card to be used. Some banks just have blanket bans on anything with 'gamer' in the title, because of massive amounts of stolen credit cards being used on gambling sites. You could presumably call your bank and tell them it's OK, if the extra discount is worth that hassle to you. I gave up and got it straight off Steam at full price instead.

There's mods for that; look for the fused-grid templates.

Also, I was thinking... since the fossil fuel plants are so laughably inefficient compared to real life, why not make competitive versions? Ones you might actually choose over starting with, say, wind turbines. Not broken, but actually viable. (Disclaimer: I have no agenda here, but it's usually a no-brainer to use wind/solar instead of coal/oil). Or at least more options; SC2k had a compromise option between cheapth, cleanth, and powerage and that was the Natural Gas plant.

e: additionally, larger IRL hydro plants generate a dozen Gigawatts or more IRL, and hydro loving blows cock in this game.

I found a way to attach my busways to actual roads. I kept getting garbage piling up in my bus depot and fire station. I'd connect the dirt road from poo poo City to my busway to get the trash collected. This worked except garbage trucks kept going around the busway. I don't think my cims want to look at dump trucks while on their scenic bus rides. I ended up doing this once I started moving my incinerators around and got some room. A dirt road connects to the busway before the fire station and then exits after the bus depot. This way the garbage trucks can get on the busway to collect garbage but then immediately leave. I guess it also lets people who work at the depot a way to drive to work.

Baby's first city (after a couple of false starts, at least)

Original town center.

First expansion. Decided to go for something a bit less grid-like here. I love the freeform roads tool.

Lumber industry. My not-Twitter feed compliments my on this roughly every four seconds, so it must have been a good idea.

Ugly block of ugly industry. As much as I enjoy landscaping neighborhoods, industry areas have to make due with boring grids.

Baby's first highway. Note that I had to destroy most of the beautiful intersection that came with the map for this.

The highway cut off a nice triangular piece of land, so I decided to put another neighborhood there.

Overview shot. I won the award for most beautiful city two years in a row. Hashtag paradiseonearth.

High-density expansion between the two rivers.

One-thousand-something more citizens and I can dam those rivers the gently caress up :woop: Game owns.

I was trying to add the Nashua river and the Merrimack, but the Merrimack stopped flowing a little north of the border and I was too lazy to edit the height maps (again).

I did try to make a Nashua map, but the area is just far to flat to be effective in cities.

Has anyone seen a mod that makes pedestrian paths not suck to place? Trying to run them parallel to roads is a pain in the rear end if you use any curves at all, and doing that without ending up with a bunch of ugly gaps in the pavement is nearly impossible. I wish you could just paint pavement on the ground or something.

Okay, dumb question time. If I get a custom growable building from workshop, and turns out it's actually not as great as in workshop's screenshots, can I just delete the asset and load the map again? Will poo poo break?

It shouldn't break anything. I've uninstalled growable residential buildings more than once, and when I reload the map, the lots the removed growables were on are simply zoned with no building present.
