Umpires have always been bad, we've just only recently come into the technology to realise it.

Butt Wizard posted:This is the first video of the actual ball I could find: This happened to me in an U15 state semi-final. We needed three to win off the last ball and I got caught slogging a full toss. Square leg umpire (our team manager) called it a no-ball even though it pretty obviously was about thigh height when I hit it. Felt pretty bad about that but we ended up winning the tournament so what can you do.

I like the idea of having the third umps on the mic, it should be funny when one of the idiots inevitably makes a gently caress up of the simplest thing

who in their right mind would want to be an umpire in Australia. Be it cricket, rugby or whatever at any level from under 9s to internationals you are in constant danger of being assaulted.

Henry in, interesting. Who will they play in the semi, Henry, Mills or Mitch?

I'm starting to think this is the case with rugby as well - last year during Super Rugby they had to basically re-structure the referee roster because they were making so many gently caress-ups and even the use of the Television Match Official has been hugely inconsistent.

I was figuring the only reason Milne was in the side was on balance; Bowling fast on Australian pitches, for when we aren't getting any swing assistance. But...Henry in!!! YES!!! Although they'd probably go for Mitch "Has a really hot girlfriend" McClenaghan for the South Africa match.

I'd play Henry. McClenaghan played like poo poo in his one match.

Playing Henry could be a nice surprise but I would be surprised if he's selected. I wonder if they'll go for Mills given his experience in these kind of matches? I think McClenaghan ruled himself out due to his last game. I would go Henry personally.

I was a soccer ref for about 7-8 years from about age 15-23 and it is honestly the shittest job. The players were generally fine and pretty well-behaved, but the parents were just absolute fuckwits. Imagine being a pimply 15 y/o kid copping constant abuse and threats from the touchlines (dads, mums, grandparents, friends, you name it). It was so hosed - more than a few times I called games off way early and left the ground because I was so scared of getting assaulted.

Another time I was umpiring under 12s and a kid was bowling utter poo poo like off the pitch but the batsman was chasing it off the pitch and pushing it to the field. So of course the parents went mental that I wasn't calling it a wide.

So, no. I'll probably go sit in the fan zone which is handily right outside my office.

If the ball pitches off the wicket it is a no ball (not a wide), regardless of whether it has been hit. The parents were right to go bananas over this Davis-esque umpiring display.

Once umpiring in a club game had a bowler running on the pitch in his follow through. Quietly spoke with him about it and he told me to gently caress off. Later in the over he appealed for lbw but I couldn't give it out as he was firmly between me and the batsman. Even told his captain that was the reason. He looked like he was ready to have a go at me but the keeper and the captain told him to stop being a cock and bowl properly.

Yeah I had that happen too when I was umpiring, it was an artificial pitch so no issue there but I told the bowler it would be impossible for me to give anyone out since I couldn't see through him going straight down the pitch. Also one other time this dipshit in my team was umpiring at the bowler's end and gave one of our guys out LBW...problem was the other team had no interest in an LBW (it didn't hit anything) and were appealing to the square leg umpire for a stumping at the time

My old man used to do umpiring duties when I played u11-u15's. Kids would go crazy every second ball with "HOWZAAAAT" to which he would reply "NOT OUUUUTTTT!!!" in an even louder fashion.

Counter point - you get me umpiring, where I convince myself that the plumbest of plumb lbws, struck low on the back leg, going on to hit middle, is somehow not out. Surprised I didn't lose couple of front teeth.

Having to self umpire lower grade club games in Perth was the worst, not enough umpires wanted to put up with a bunch of idiots for a few bucks every Saturday afternoon. Worst match was against Swanborne, where the opposition captain (and club president) had the umpire changed 5 times during the match, and the square leg umpire changed a few times too, as was allowed when without a proper ump. I personally walked off the field when at square leg when I was called a "cheating mother loving oval office" by said captain screaming in my face, for not giving a run out that was well in. A couple of the opposition were very apologetic after the game (the ones who weren't getting upset during the match), while the rest called us all cunts again and sped off in their cars. Worst game ever.

the british university sports people changed their playing conditions to mandate one actual proper umpire for our league games this summer (we got promoted!!), but don't give us any money to actually pay for a guy to do it so we just self-umpire because we haven't the cash. It isn't that bad here since the bowling side can't mandate a change in umpire at will (sounds like a dumb rule), and I haven't seen any shocking decisions that are obviously not out, you just rarely see lbws since the benefit of the doubt is definitely a thing. I would probably think differently if we had a crooked umpire, although if you are bowling first you probably could redress the balance while batting... Then again this is Cricket in Scotland, the culture seems completely different to Australian cricket. The only real annoyance that I've seen was when I managed to gently caress up scoring in one of our games last year and managed to say that one of our players that was batting for most of the innings scored 3, but that was because I hadn't done it before and it was pouring with rain and was incredibly cold for most of the innings so I was more interested in keeping warm than watching who was at each end...

My favourite cricketing memory will always be the day the 13 year old opening batsman of the opposition had a tantrum on the field after being given out caught at second slip but claimed he didn't hit. He argued with the umpire (our coach) and then started crying when he wouldn't change the decision. Took off all his gear on the pitch and sat down. Eventually his Dad had to come out and carry the kid and all his gear off.

I've just had a look through the rules and theres actually nothing in the laws about unsporting conduct that results in them being chucked out. Everything is just 'reported to the cricket board'.

Basically, you're meant to just tell them that you're going to report everything and whether or not they can make it stop. The board then looks at the umpire reports and decides whether to fine/suspend/ban anyone. They generally don't.
