opentable owns, used it years back when someone here suggested Tokyo Fish Bank and have used it every trip since then. Go to Fish Bank by the way. It's good.

I need some advice for my upcoming itinerary in May. Spending 5 days in Kansai, getting into Kyoto from Tokyo early Sunday morning. I'm planning to spend 3 full days and nights in Kyoto, doing a day trip in Nara on Wednesday and returning to either Kyoto or Osaka that night, and flying out of Osaka on Friday afternoon. I'm not sure what to do between Wednesday night and Friday afternoon though: - Stay in Kyoto one extra day before going to Osaka late Thursday for <24 hours - Visit Himeji Castle on Thursday, and head to Osaka Thursday afternoon for <24 hours - Just spend up to 48 hours in Osaka. Right now I'm not planning on doing much in Osaka at all but I'd really like to see the aquarium, and I don't think I'll have the time to do that with a trip to Himeji on the same day. Basically need some thoughts on whether to put that extra day in Kyoto, Himeji, or Osaka.

I'm going to take flak from the Osaka goons here but Osaka is really not a city you can spend 48 hours in as a tourist... I'd definitely take the Himeji trip, now that the scaffolding seems to have been removed. Ise is another possible daytrip location from Kyoto for the shrines there (especially the Amaterasu one). If you like technology you can also take the Shinkansen to Nagoya and visit the train and Toyota museum there. Even if you don't particularly love cars the Toyota museum has a rather big part about weaving, machinery, robots etc.

For the enthusiast that's a great trip, if only for the massive library of bottles you can sample at the end. That part isn't free but if you want to taste what a $10,000 whiskey is like, this is a good opportunity.

I went there in 2002 and was able to get a shot from the year of my birth(1980) for 2,500 or 3,500 yen. I can't remember the exact price but it was a great experience. I was taken there by members of a wacky cult but they did buy me some booze to compensate me for my time so I guess it is ok! But for anyone who likes whiskey and has some time to kill in Kansai it is worth the visit.

Well it seems to be the highest rated hotel on tripadvisor. That price to be fair is probably for their Executive Suite or something like that. Those are not exactly something hotels usually advertise for so I'm not sure why they're doing it for this one. Still, for more normal accommodations they're not the cheapest. Look up Rihga Royal Hotel or ANA Crowne Plaza. They're both further away from the main train station but closer to Peace Park and city center. I stayed at ANA and they were good, can't vouch for RIGHA though since I haven't stayed there. Just don't expect views from your room windows unless you're willing to pay for the rooms on the higher floors for either of them, if that's your thing.

Yeah, I missed a zero there when reading it. That really is out there. I remember seeing a documentary about really exclusive hotel rooms that comes with a personal butler and executive chef which are practically an entire floor of the hotel in itself and the one I could remember was $25K a night. Not too sure what the hell Hiroshima Sheraton comes with for that price. And from the documentary, the real kicker is that if you're famous enough, even though you're rich enough to afford it, the hotels are usually happy to have you stay in those suites for free.

I didn't exactly plan out my trip, but basically just book a hotel in the next city over. There were no decent options in Hiroshima, but a ~25min shinkansen ride to Fukuyama put me in the Richmond hotel for way cheaper and way nicer. I'm p bad at vacations.

Can anyone recommend a nice ryokan or onsen hotel in Aomori or Iwate? I'm ideally looking for something easily accessible by train or bus from a Tohoku Shinkansen station, not super-expensive, hopefully more on the old-fashioned side. I've been tracking down leads but nothing really stands out so far.

I'm meeting my friend at Narita. I'm landing in Terminal 1 and he is landing in Terminal 2 a few hours later. Is it as simple as just taking the train to terminal 2 and waiting for him outside immigration or are there numerous exits? edit: Oh wait, I guess there won't be immigration / customs since he is arriving on a domestic flight. Anyone have any fun activities you can do around the Sendai / Miyagi Prefecture area? I heard Matsushima is a cool place and Japan Guide recommended it but wanted to hear any other opinions. We'll be arriving in Sendai around noon / early afternoon.
