Just had a building that was on fire put itself out by upgrading. :haw:

I can only imagine what that was like for the person living there. "Oh poo poo the building's on fire! Okay hold on I'm adding another floor to the building so I can just live there instead where there's no fire! It's genius!"

I mean skyscrapers that rent out tons of space for smaller corporations would be officer right, not commercial? I dunno. I feel like my "Business district" downtown has to be nothing but high-density high level commercial right now.

Need more sky scraper variety in general.

Yeah, I want CO (or modders?) to bump up the max footprint to 8x8 for office zones.

"Tiny Trains"

So I finally have a "layout" I'm liking. It's a city centrerd around subway transfer round-abouts.

What's a subway transfer roundabout? It's two subway stops placed about as close together as possible to actually cross-over the tunnels, and on angles so the tracks don't look tooooo stupid. It works very well. It also has a custom park in the middle to make it pretty. To make an X shaped park I just made a 6x16 park and a 4x3 park and you plop 3 of them to make a fat X shape in the middle. They get flooded with people transferring between subways and the benches and fountains are popular places for people to chill out and chat.

Here's how it works underneath. It simply allows a north-south metro and east-west metro to cross over in an efficient and ok-looking way.

Here's a version with a fountain. I like these little squares and want to make a few styles, one that looks ok in an awful heavy industry area too.

Thanks for looking!

It's actually kind of impressive (and maybe a little bit scary in an existential sorta way) how well gigantic 1x1-building hellgrid cities work and how viable they are, especially when you consider the insane road-to-building ratio.

edit: In fact, the buildings in this city are so closely packed and so tiny that they turn into flat squares of color to save memory if you zoom out any farther than this:

Anyone else feel that (from a gameplay , not necessarily real-life, perspective) you need to zone way more office space than "feels right"?

This is a decent collection of most custom models. You can also demolish the small buildings and eventually you'll get bigger ones. Best downtowns in my experience are mix of hd residential and office, with hd commercial as a mid-tier buffer towards the low density stuff or around parks.

I like treating these games like my little zen garden. I'm working on the prep work for my Springfield and I've managed to get most of the major highway and bridge network on both sides of the river done. At this point I'm pretty much ready to start building actual zones and such.

An overview of the region looking from West Sprigfield. US 5 is on the west bank of the Connecticut (bottom half), I-91 on the east. Yep, that's three rotaries in a row. Thankfully the game lets you make pretty decent Massachusetts-style rotaries. It won't be quite right until we have tunneling in the game, but it'll do for now. I've set up both Main Street and the frontage roads, as well as all of the additional ramps on the I-291 interchange in the upper left to allow the frontage road connections.

The view down I-91 and future downtown Springfield. I've set up Columbus Avenue (the frontage road) with all the proper exits. Downtown and residential areas will be built to the left of this image. With some ped paths, Waterfront Park will be ready to go too for lots of tourists to enjoy. Now all I need is a Basketball Hall of Fame ploppable. :v:

The US 5/I-91 interchange over the South End bridge, looking up 91. It still needs some tweaks.

US 5 and the MA 57 rotary. Can you believe that this three rotary in a row thing was going to be I-91?

Okay I'm actually playing my map for real for the first time, and welp. I was worried that this map might be a little on the tough side with how hilly it is and I was right. This map is relatively flat in the playable area, but there are a lot of really small changes in elevation. I don't think it will be possible to make large, gridlike cities outside of the few areas I intentionally leveled. Just a word of warning for anyone who doesn't want to bother with something that will sort of gently caress you over in terms of playability. On the other hand, it at least looks nice.

There's a real reward in the challenge of making a usable grid on hilly terrain. I've got a decently gridded metro area coming along on the fjords map, seeing skyscrapers cramming in to the usable sections of a map is great

One last update to the hellcity for the moment: I utilized basically all of the available space in my starting square except for that big space intentionally left blank that has succumbed to terrible amounts of pollution thanks to the 5 or 6 garbage dumps I had to plop there at the start of the game. If I zoom the camera out to view the whole city at any angle other than this one, half the buildings on the left side don't even bother rendering and just show up as a gray square. In the far distance you can see my first expansion into another square running directly under the highway, so close of a fit that cars that pass through that road brush the tops of their cabs against the underside. But I guess snugness is what the hellcity is about. Speaking of hell:

I'm basically constantly at 100% cpu usage because there are just so many loving building models, which makes my computer run kinda hot! I saw it go up to 80c and decided I probably should stop for the night.
