The problem with the current tier balance is the devs have mixed treaty and non-treaty ships. The tier 7 and tier 8 American heavy cruisers(Pensacola and New Orleans) were treaty cruisers that followed the 10,000 ton limit. While the Cleveland was a non-treaty "light" cruiser that massed a full three thousand tons more.

The same thing happens with Japanese destroyers. During WWII Japan had two tiers of destroyers. Advanced, large, non-treaty destroyers like the Fubuki and cheaper smaller treaty destroyers like the Hatsuharu. That's why once you get past tier 5 the Japanese destroyers seem so incredibly terrible.

It's because they've sacrificed chronology in order to create a steady progression of gun calibre (and by extension armour), or in the case of carriers hangar size. Chronology is just the tie breaker when you have two or three ships in a row with the same guns.

The tier 7 japanese Cruiser is like a SuperCleveland if you leave the 6 inch guns on it, holy poo poo. Faster, more maneuverable, better AA, more health and an extra turret, so 3 extra guns. If you get every upgrade except the 8 inch gun one. Also torpedoes.

When the issues on NA with Telia moved beyond apparent and into debilitating, instead of finding a new host Wargaming split NA into NA East and NA West and stayed with Telia, giving us two unstable connections and crippling the game by splitting an already small playerbase.

This is where we're coming from.

Also, if you compare the armor on the American cruiser line is pretty much equal until the Baltimore which gets like 20mm or so more armor in some spots. In order to meet the treaty tonnage requirement, armor was sacrificed.

This is, in my opinion, why the tiers don't seem to matter as much as in tanks. Guns and armor improvements are slight to non-existent a lot of times to comply with the treaty limit.

Mario wasn't sure if this Jeb guy was a good influence on Yoshi.

If I remember right the Pensacolas had some pretty severe compromises in protection that the New Orleans didn't, but the US couldn't get what they wanted a cruiser to be on less than 15k tons with the Baltimores (which are some of the best looking ships in the game).

Treaty cruisers did get better laid out and get more protection out of it, even if the improvements were small or came at the expense of other things (like ability to stay upright and not take damage in a storm looking at you Japan). I particularly look forward to going from the Italian early condottieris, which have armor listed but I'm pretty sure that's actually the hull, and I'm pretty sure 20mms could penetrate at close enough range to the Zaras, which are some of the toughest, best laid out treaty cruisers built (helped by not needing a long range).

Right now, yeah, I agree, it's a very shallow game that's fun for about a week or two.

- Destroyers are mostly useless above tier 5.
- Battleships are pretty much "point, shoot and see big numbers, the game" and that sorta gets old pretty fast.
- Carriers require that you go afk for several minutes at a time and are pretty underpowered unless you have two or more cooperating, and you can't have that because then it's overpowered.
- Because of the above, the only thing that's really fun to play is cruisers because they go relatively fast and can fight every other ship class with some success.
- Beyond tier 5 or so once you've gotten past the weirdo WW1 ships every single ship in a class is basically the same and plays the same and there's nowhere near the variation you see in tanks.
- Because of the way the shot distribution and damage model works the only really significant gun parameter is how many you have and how fast they fire - you can ignore everything else except maybe range. For this reason, the Fuso is pretty much flat out better than the higher tier battleships.
- The fact that there are two ammo types in the game is basically irrelevant because only one is actually useful.
- The game modes are all garbage and don't encourage cooperation in a game that would otherwise benefit a lot from that.
- Hitting moving targets with a shell travel time of 10-15 seconds is very hard, so they basically had to dumb the shot mechanics down so much that you only work in one dimension. It's pretty boring.
- Despite scaling up travel speeds a lot there's still a lot of very boring waiting around to get somewhere.
- Torpedoes are a dumb weapon and are kinda like artillery in WoT. There's a lot of random chance and dumb luck involved and if you luck out someone gets oneshot.

It gets really uninteresting after probably tier 5. In part because battleships which are "point, shoot and see big numbers, the game" are also much stronger than any of the other classes.

I mostly gave up on going up the tiers and just play the Minekaze repeatedly like some kind of nerd. It's fun enough for a free game.

At higher (6+) tiers it feels like they could add more planes per squadron, because AA gets really serious up there - guaranteed to lose attacking planes in pretty much any run makes the few attacks you do get markedly less effective (if they don't get panicked on top). Just losing one or two torpedo planes makes it *much* easier to dodge the following torpedo spread (and all ships at tier 6 and up are also fast and agile compared to earlier ships).

But that doesn't solve the "3-4 sorties per game" issue. Faster turn-around time? Higher speed on the planes?
Higher speed on planes would be pretty interesting to see, since not only would you be able to get more sorties out per game, it'll allow you to get into position faster and give the targets less time to react, as well as being in and out of the AA faster.

Cryptanalytic influences on the treaty
What was unknown to the participants of the Conference was that the American "Black Chamber" (the Cypher Bureau, a U.S. intelligence service), commanded by Herbert Yardley, was spying on the delegations' communications with their home capitals. In particular, Japanese communications were penetrated thoroughly, and American negotiators were able to get the minimum possible deal the Japanese had indicated they would accept, less than which they would renounce the Conference. As this ratio value was unpopular with much of the Imperial Japanese Navy and with the increasingly active and important ultranationalist groups, the value the Japanese government accepted was the cause of much suspicion and accusation among Japanese politicians and Naval officers.

Katō Tomosaburō, favored accepting a 60% ratio to the prospect of an arms race with the United States, as the relative industrial output of the two nations would cause Japan to lose such an arms race and might cause an economic crisis as a consequence. Going into the negotiations the Japanese had only 55% as many capital ships as the Americans and 18% the GDP.

His opinion was opposed strongly by Katō Kanji, the president of the Naval Staff College, who acted as his chief naval aide at the delegation, and who represented the influential "big navy" school of thought. This school of thought held that in the event of war the United States would be able to build indefinitely more warships, given its huge industrial power, and Japan thus needed to prepare as thoroughly as possible for the inevitable conflict with America.

It's great how two people can come to the exact opposite conclusions from the same fact.

Different game modes would be nice. Attack/defend, maybe even convoy escort or something. Dive bombers and HE are pretty underutilized, I feel like having airfield targets (or something) would actually give them a purpose. I'd like to nail an ammunition ship with cannon fire from 20km out, too.

In other news, the Nagato is pretty badass. Pubbies seem to hate it (two fewer rolls of the die, I guess) but those 16 inch guns are killer if you can aim.

If you can see them jockeying for position to launch torpedoes you can get a pretty good idea when they might be launching. It all depends on the DD but it can be telling. If you can focus them down and try to knock out a launcher before they can get out a salvo then that would allow you more time to possibly take them out completely.

They cannot patch that poo poo soon enough.

Alternatively give you like 12 dive bombers in a squadron that drop a shitload of bombs that make everything go CRITICAL HIT and ON FIRE if you want them to be slightly different than just vertical torpedoes. Still, damage needs to go up to be a good chunk of what a torpedo attack is capable (less to not be totally unfair to cruisers/destroyers - not that landing a full dive bomber attack on them is going to happen).

The "force a repair" has never worked for me with dive bombers unless you send them in *way* before torpedo bombers (i.e they can't see the torp bombers coming) but by the time the torp bombers are in position they are probably a good way to regenerating their repair ability

I do wonder if they'll be on some sort of weekly patch schedule every... thursday? or what, there isn't much point in plowing 200 games into this right now.

Where angels and generals fear to tread.
Impressions from rushing to a Langley last night:

Carriers are extremely My poo poo.
Lots of carrier drivers are bad and sail immediately into farthest corner of map so planes take 10 minutes to get anywhere. I've seen a few get stuck on the map-edge to make themselves perfect torpedo targets. I've just been following the largest blob of my teams ships and it's worked out okay. I won a game yesterday by capping in my CV and it was awesome, always be moving forwards.
There is no greater joy than setting up a proper hammer and anvil attack.
But that is really hard.
It's less boring to be in a carrier waiting to re-arm than it is to be stuck in a slow boat far away from the action.
The St. Louis is also cool when upgraded.

So the game's been fun so far, I'll see if that carries on to higher tiers.
