Apparently it got pretty far down the pipe with the Australian AF before they eventually bought the F-111. It is imaginable that the A-5 just needed another engineering pass, another engine, and to not be landed on aircraft carriers.

So this thing was buzzing my apartment yesterday afternoon: Not the greatest picture, but using a point-and-shoot through a dirty window on a back lit cloudy day. A couple of Hueys also just went past a few minutes ago. Next week they're going to shut the city down for maneuvers or something like that. I think it's a ROCAF EC225, but not 100% on that.

It's a helicopter cockpit on a fixed wing airframe, that's all. It probably feels just as weird in (say) a SA341 at 14,000'

AVHerald has updated on the Germanwings crash.quote:Radar data suggest the aircraft had reached FL380 about 3 minutes prior to leaving FL380 and descended from FL380 through FL110 in 8 minutes (average rate of descent 3375 fpm). The aircraft appeared to have levelled off at FL068 for one minute while on a northeasterly heading of 26 degrees true, mountains rise up to 8900 feet about 1nm north of the last reported aircraft position. So if we're still going with hypoxia: pressurization failure, pilots hit the autopilot in a panic and tell it to level off at FL068 before losing consciousness, autopilot flies them right into the mountain?
|
# ? Mar 25, 2015 14:16 |
|
I'm pretty sure the first memory item for loss of pressurization is PUT YOUR GODAMNED MASK ON, and not set the autopilot to descend.

Wouldn't be the first incorrect reaction to hypoxia, won't be the last. But yes.

The New York Times posted:"At no point during the descent was there any communication from the cockpit to air traffic controllers or any other signal of an emergency." Does this suggest that no audible alerts or alarms automatically went off in the cockpit during the descent, even immediately before impact? I'm used to hearing "Pull Up, Pull Up, Pull Up" in the cockpit voice recorders and myriad other audible alarms. In Helios Airways Flight 522, the pilots mistook the (audible) cabin altitude warning horn for something else and everyone aboard died. Shouldn't a similar audible alarm be heard on the CVR if the cabin depressurized?
|
# ? Mar 25, 2015 23:17 |

They're referring to radio communications, the content of the CVR hasn't been made public yet.
