People talking about the Cruz thing have to remember: politics is all about optics. and the average voter, aka the one you have to convince, doesn't give half a poo poo about why Cruz has to enroll in Obamacare - just that He Said Thing Was Bad and now He's Enrolling In Thing

Literally "I was harmed by having cheaper insurance." That's maybe not the best characterization of the person bringing the legal challenge. If the subsidies weren't in effect it would put the cost of his insurance over the hardship threshold meaning he wouldn't have to purchase insurance at all, and according to him he doesn't want to have insurance. So technically he IS being financially harmed by the subsidy. Not saying I agree with the legal basis for his challenge or want him to succeed but I can at least see his perspective.

And he should be loving honest and admit that he's doing this because it's a better option than getting his own insurance on the private market or going without, and then stop campaigning to take that option away from millions of people. This is different from Rand Paul or Warren Buffet. Cruz claims that Obamacare is bad, but he obviously knows that is not true because he is choosing it over the options he claims are better. Cruz using the ACA has to have some kind of ulterior purpose. There's no way you run as the tea party candidate and just go along with Obamacare.

Conservative theories work best as nebulous ideas that sound like common sense. Walker pushed too many of them upon the insistence of his backers and the result is obviously disastrous. He has failed conservatism and I doubt he will be able to make much of it once his actually shows he face to the country instead of just being a generic guy that beat some democrats and stood up to unions. I think a Walker presidency is a nightmare scenario but I'm fairly confident he won't get the nomination and will be the first to flare out once it gets going. He's the dream president for Republicans but as a candidate I think he leaves a lot to be desired, especially once he starts going against real opponents that know how to fight dirty. Mr Ice Cream Glove posted:Do you guys think Cruz's papa is going to be an issue? Someone will try to bring up that Cruz's father fought for Castro at one point, which is why Ted has spent so much time establishing his father's regret and how he later got oppressed by Communism. It won't be one of the credible candidates hammering Cruz on it, because it obviously sets up Cruz for a great pre-written soundbite. The people who really hate communists love Ted Cruz, so this won't be nearly as much of a problem as Obama's father, who once wrote a paper with SOCIALISM in the name1. But if a news organization like Drudge Report decides that Cruz is not their man, they'll be sure to run a story on Cruz's communist father just like they ran on Obama's socialist father. 1 Obama, Barack, Sr. "Problems facing our socialism". Problems for Walker: -Wisconsin is not doing as well as its neighbors economically. The job growth he promised isn't there at all -The Wisconsin budget is a shitheap. He is Sam Brownback with better damage control on this for now, but once a presidential campaign spotlight hits it, he's done. -He has a campaign finance scandal that nobody really knows about yet. All three of those things can be used by other Republicans. At the same time he'll continue to be hammered as a Koch puppet. Also he has no charisma and he can't open his eyes all the way.
|
# ? Mar 25, 2015 16:14 |
I think the outrageously and obviously bad job Walker is doing is one of the reasons why the party heads are going to want to sink him. People like the Kochs want him as President so he can rubber stamp everything with their hands up his rear end, but realistically he makes the concepts of conservatism look really bad as his tenure has been disastrous and he's made a big show of being Reagan II. You want him doing his best to gently caress over people in Wisconsin without the rest of the country paying much attention while similar stuff is being quietly pushed elsewhere rather than put it in the national spotlight for everyone to inspect. He also looks like a doofus so that doesn't really help his image.

He got elected in off year elections with a goddamn treasure chest of outside money. He has never had to do much fending for himself. Wisconsin is a blue state, but it's not California. Flipping 3-5% of the vote wins you an election as a Republican. Ron Johnson is a world class dunce and got elected there. It's nothing special for a Republican to win in Wisconsin. Tommy Thompson won twice. He's not a completely unskilled politician. But he's no magic worker either just because he won a state that voted for Obama twice.
