My brother-in-law is a nice guy but makes some retarded decisions at auctions. He bought some :siren: CUSTOMIZED :siren: Olds (I think) at Barret-Jackson, paid waaay too much, the loving thing wouldn't run long enough to drive to be loaded on the trailer at the auction, and as far as I know it's languishing in his garage in Grande Prairie for the last 5 years.

It might take a while, but you can usually get pretty close to level through the courts, as long as you don't lose it all to a lawyer. you have to look closely, and walk away from anything vaguely sketchy.

I was thinking about going all in, flipping auction cars, but i'm a terrible salesman, and people are generally terrible.

Yeah to continue with Powershift's talk of fatigue on the road, it's ironic that the laws in place for hours of service really don't do anything but make it difficult to sleep when you need to. I can't tell you how many loving times through the years, especially running hard in the USA, where I would get maybe 3 hours sleep and then sit around playing solitaire for 7 hours before getting back on the road, because even though I'm not the least bit tired, the law says I have to pull over. And then 5 hours into my shift, now I'm dead loving tired and perfectly legal to drive.

The City of Edmonton thought it a good idea last night to patch potholes at 11:30pm a couple blocks from where I live... Despite it being -3 at the time and there being a freeze/thaw cycle for the next few days, and despite the fact that we got about 4 inches of wet snow within the past 48 hours

Clearly solitaire is dangerously irresponsible. Outlaw this activity immediately.

Clearly someone reported the potholes to them (http://www.edmonton.ca/potholes) which means if they receive claims for damage related to it they'll be liable according to their own rules.(http://www.edmonton.ca/transportation/report_requests/pothole-damage-claims.aspx) "The City is liable only if it knew, or ought to have known, of the state of disrepair."

City of red deer told me they knew about the pothole I hit last year and told me to pound sand. Said it's on my insurance if there is a lot of damage. That same pothole remained semi submerged for a week before they steamed the drains open and filled it in. There are a lot of huge holes pretty much everywhere this year and somehow there are hellaflush cars everywhere.

Yup, it varies from city to city but if they were unaware of the pothole, they don't have a responsibility to help with repair costs, if they knew about the pothole, they have something like 48 hours to fix it and after that are partly responsible for vehicle damage.

A few years ago a 1979 RX-7 was in the TSD at Sports Car Olympics, the Thanksgiving Weekend O' Fun in Regina. Their TSDs are entirely dirt and gravel, and that RX-7 lost 2 tires. I believe the drivetrain was fine.

Nah, I've actually grown to like TSDs more then autocross, but it's good to know that there are some out there where replacing your oilpan and/or suspension after the event isn't a prerequisite to running.

There are a lot of city-driving TSDs. I know they have them all over BC and the AB vintage car clubs (which you probably qualify for with your ancient Scirocco, you know where I am if you need a codriver) do a bunch of regularity rallies that don't necessarily involve the balls to the wall offroading of the Loop or the Gnu.

Also I have a project in mind to build a Loop-capable FC RX7, it's just a matter of getting a cheap enough car to start from.

F1DriverQuidenBerg
Jan 19, 2014

I'm sure vintage car clubs would love my rusted out Scirocco. I don't mind the balls to the wall stuff I just there wasn't the occasional stage where I cave in my oil pan going half the speed required.

I'd be very interested to hear your plans for a Loop-capable FC.

edit: Vintage Sports Car Club of Calgary has a Chrysler Crossfire listed on their "our cars" page, I can't imagine my scirocco would be more offensive then that.

Yup they do. To be fair the suspension was lowered and the skidplate was the reason the oil pan was caved in instead of removed. Whenever my springs from the states get here I'll get stock ride height back.

"High-grade gravel surface" means as good as paved but noisier when it's good, but muddy, potholed, and some ruts when it's bad. It will be wiiiiiide throughout - grades of gravel road corresponds to width as well as depth, composition, and slope. Right now, it's probably bad unless it's closed. By mid-June it should be back up to good, based on my experience of seasonal effects on gravel roads. I would be surprised if that Loop caused damage to oilpans, lowered VW being a notable exception.

That looks like an excellent drive, though the lack of complexity - it's pretty much the only road in the area for much of its length - means it might be a bit boring for a TSD. Getting completely loving lost is half the fun of a TSD (the other half is watching other cars get completely loving lost). You need lots of intersections for that.

Assuming I'm right about which Loop we're talking about here. I love backcountry roads, if somebody knows of an interesting and under-appreciated route through the foothills / eastern Rockies, I'd love to hear about it!

F1DriverQuidenBerg

I believe its called the Loop on name alone now. Last December was 12 hours starting at 7pm and ending at 7am. It was reasonably technical, one section had the road shift over 10 feet to the right coming out of a right hand corner that resulted in me completely flying off the road at 60kph, . The oil pan got crushed in the second to last stage that I would say is more of an ATV trail and didn't resemble anything close to a road.

I mean I really am to blame running a TSD on $250 coilovers in a $1,000 car where the lowest point is the oil pan, but the year before there was a particularly nasty Texas gate that caved in my oil pan and completely took the skid plate and lower front bumper off another.

Yeah, that's really about the best road for the largest length of it, but only do it if you don't give a poo poo about your windshield.

Hwy 40 from Hinton to GP is another option for the far north leg (and much easier on the vehicle) but I find it boring as gently caress.

From the US border at Waterton (a couple of crossings) North to Pincher, cut over to the Crowsnest Pass and up the Forest Trunk road is pretty nice. Hwy 22 North of Pincher is a reasonable too, far more scenic than Hwy 2 at least.

Typically the Forestry Trunk road is closed north of Coleman until late May if not early June.

There is the forestry trunk road from Hinton to just east of GP as well. 80km/h speed limit.

Edit: The actual FTR comes out at high 40 around 45km south of Grande Cache, but can be linked up to Hinton via some other roads.

Thank you for that link! Even though I don't have a motorcycle, I should be able to contribute to their database. Nothing in southwestern Ontario, yet, and I'm moving to Kitchener/Waterloo in 2 days - and there's a K/W Rally club. I'll miss the prairies and mountains, but TSD all year long sounds pretty good, too.

Just after christmas 2013 my GF and I went winter camping in Waterton. We did a bit of off-the-beaten-path exploring on our way back to Calgary, and ended up on Township Road 110 near where it connects to the southern part of the FTR. We turned back when we found patches of deep, slippery snow on a road that was techically closed and had no cell service.

When I don't listen to my GF or my instincts (whichever applies, she generally gets an override / veto) I end up stuck and calling for a tow. This happened in Saskatchewan, not on a mountain road. That's a field of stubble I'm stuck in.

It was certainly closed in December of 2013. You could get around the barriers if you were willing and able to plow through some of the deeper snow on the shoulder (and risk tumbling into a snow-filled ditch). I did not feel my studded winter tires were sufficient for that task, in my 328.
