What advantage does this motorcar have over, say, a train, which I could also afford?

I'm pretty sure loving over public transportation to gently caress over minorities is just the status quo for America. The highway system around Buffalo, NY was specifically designed to bypass the poor areas of the city and funding for the subway system suddenly disappeared when it was time to expand it far enough for people to actually leave the city with it.

This is exactly it. I have a half-brother who strongly opposes expanding bus service to his neighborhood because "the poors will be able to come here and rob me" and maybe, in the future, even live in his area!

Yes. When there are proposals to extend the light rail around here to the suburbs, there are always alarmed letters about how this is going to "bring the inner city crime element" to their utopian picket fence world. White suburbanites literally think black people will ride the metro to the suburbs, steal their flat screen TVs, and ride back with them.

Actually, this reminds me of a bike trail, the one that runs from Pittsburgh to DC. In the 90s, when the leg from Pittsburgh to Connelsville (large-ish mountain town about 80 miles away) was proposed, some people resisted because it was going to be "a drug and crime highway from the big city straight to our backyards." Like, they thought Scary Pittsburgh People were going to ride a bike 80 miles just to smash some windows and deal some drugs :psyduck: :psyduck: :psyduck:

There's probably a component of that, but really it's mostly just not giving a poo poo about them. Topeka is basically letting a lovely bridge get shittier and collapse, because the people it will affect most are poor people trying to cross the river to get to their poor people jobs or GED programs or whatever it is those subhumans are doing these days. Thank God, too, because otherwise that relatively small uptick in the exploding Kansas deficit would really screw us over! As the old Republican saying goes "Gotta not-spend money to make ???"

One of the worst public schools in Boston is located in one of the more white, suburban neighborhoods. I worked right near there, and it was always a bizarre experience trying to get the office manager to understand that no, we did not need to call the police on the kids walking to their bus stop, even if they sometimes would linger in the parking lot to have a smoke.

Hell, my dad actually did have some jackass kids from Boston smash up some of our poo poo at the family laundromat in a smaller city once or twice years ago, but he's still pretty much totally fine with having those trains running through because of the business opportunities it brings to the community as a whole, since we've otherwise got nearly fuckall out here.

Trains are higher capacity, and their routes are more consistent and predictable which bring economic boosts that bus routes don't. Trains also tend to be objectively a smoother more pleasant ride, meaning middle income people who have the money to drive are more likely to switch from car to train than from car to bus which gives the system more riders and therefore makes it more likely they can continue to expand service. Buses might be cheaper, and for low demand routes can be the best option, but you also get what you pay for.

This is all true, and a recent-ish attempt at getting the best of both worlds (though in the US, Pittsburgh did it first in the 60s :smug:) is "Bus Rapid Transit." It's basically dedicated busways that function more or less like trains but cost way less to build.

Depends on the distance between residence and employment. Buses can take a long time to go a short distance (an hour for ~10 miles, in one case I personally dealt with), and light rail can make it easier to not have to work in your own backyard (or leave your house at 4am to get to your 8am job).

The only problem with trains is that someone keeps drawing a bunch of criss-crossy little lines on them and writing political terms in white paint over the lines. (EDIT: oh hi loquacius)

EDIT: On one hand, I'm kind of sorry for transit chat. On the other, it's nice to discuss the context of a cartoon that isn't reprehensible!
