I wonder if Netflix Top Gear would switch to a format similar to TGUS where it's all a challenge. It'd certainly cut down on the need to source a track and/or get manufacturer support like they did via the BBC.

I can't say I'd be disappointed if it went that way. While the cinematography of supercars on the test track was pretty awe inspiring, I'd like to see more challenge and banter.

Eh, they could get a track easily enough. I don't want the show to turn into TGUS, we've already got one of those.

All of Hammonds quotes ever since this started and after Clarkson was sacked have indicated hes staying with the BBC. He does have 2 or 3 other Weekday/Saturday night programs he does with them, so hes got a lot to lose leaving them.

Uh, until 2012 Jeremy and Andy Wilman were the main investors in Bedder 6 which iirc owned the franchise. That would have made Oison quite literally an underling up to that point. Wilman (the executive producer) has been a long time friend of Jeremys, and co-investor. If you really want to rank the importance of individuals within pretty much any corporate structure, you look at a) pay scale b) how replaceable they are. He was the highest paid, and I think probably the least replaceable given the length of his involvement with the show.

So yeah, Oison has always been an underling; if anyone was Clarkson's boss, it would have been Andy Wilman / the BBC.

BBC bids to air remaining Top Gear episodes

BBC2 will attempt to get the final three episodes in the 22nd series of Top Gear on air despite sacking Jeremy Clarkson for assaulting a producer.

BBC director general Tony Hall said he has tasked BBC2 controller Kim Shillinglaw with completing the tail end of the series, which was pulled on 10 March following Clarkson’s suspension.

Hall told BBC News: “What I am hoping is that the BBC2 controller will be able to put together the last programmes in this current series, sadly without Jeremy.”

Realising Hall’s ambition is unlikely to be straightforward. James May and Richard Hammond have both suggested that they will be loyal to their co-host and leave the show. “I think we are very much the three of us as a package,” May told reporters yesterday.

There is also uncertainty about the future role of executive producer Andy Wilman, who has been pivotal to show’s success since it was rebooted in 2002. He is a school friend of Clarkson’s and may also chose loyalty to the presenter over completing series 22.

While the Top Gear team is likely to have a significant amount of pre-recorded footage, the studio elements of the show are recorded close to TX and have not yet been filmed.

It is also not clear if the BBC would be prepared to include the pre-recorded footage it holds of Clarkson, following his attack on producer Oisin Tymon.

Features lined up for the remainder of the series include the presenting team testing second-hand SUV’s and Clarkson driving luxury limos around the Top Gear track.

Beyond series 22, Hall has tasked Shillinglaw with reinventing the motoring programme in 2016. “Then the most important thing is to look to 2016 and how we can renew the programme and give back to the fans, of which I am one, a programme which they love. That will be different and difficult, but that’s what we’ve got to do,” he said.

Clarkson and Top Gear’s future up in the air

The BBC’s decision to release Jeremy Clarkson after he physically assaulted a Top Gear producer has sparked speculation about his future and that of the motoring show.

Clarkson was told by BBC director general Tony Hall on Wednesday that his contract will not be renewed after his 30-second attack on Oisin Tymon forced the producer to go to A&E.

“Common to all at the BBC have to be standards of decency and respect. I cannot condone what has happened,” Hall said in a statement.

News of Clarkson’s departure initiated speculation about his future, and Hall said he did not expect the presenter would struggle to find work elsewhere. Channel 4 and Sky both have no plans to work with Clarkson, while it is thought that the presenter may be too costly for Channel 5.

ITV declined to comment, despite talk that it could provide an ideal home for Clarkson should he wish to continue with his TV career in the UK. Another suggestion is that Netflix may be interested in signing the star.

Meanwhile, Hall has tasked BBC2 controller Kim Shillinglaw with rebooting Top Gear in 2016.

The early indications are that she may have to find three new presenters, with James May and Richard Hammond suggesting they will be loyal to their co-host.

The future of Top Gear executive producer and Clarkson’s school friend Andy Wilman is also uncertain.

He is currently a full-time BBC employee.

“It will be hard, but I wouldn’t rule out others bringing the energy and commitment of the existing team,” said a senior BBC insider. “The presenters are important but the brand can live on.”

One entertainment producer said the BBC must parachute in a presenter with a different style. “Could the format survive without him? It’s by no means easy but it is possible,” he said.

Many industry figures said the BBC made the right decision in not renewing Clarkson’s contract. Pact chief executive John McVay said there was no place for physical or verbal bullying, describing the decision as “right and proper”.

As a casual viewer, it really sucks to see it go this way. I'll miss James May the most. Hammond always seemed the weakest of the 3 and Clarkson was just plain annoying but the 3 of them did make some pretty memorable shows, especially the epic episodes.

Road Trip southern USA, the one that ended in Mississippi and had Hammond almost killed for his MAN-LOVE HILLARY FOR PRES truck was my first real exposure to the series other than clips and made my try to watch it whenever I had the opportunity.
