Theories released their debut album "Regression" yesterday and it's some great death metal/grindcore from Seattle. I highly recommend it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O40f-N6MNjY

Scott Clendenin (Control Denied/Sound of Perseverance line-up bassist) died. He was 47. He was my favorite Death bass player, even more than DiGiorgio.

Immortal is no more. Abbath moves on as a solo artist. I posted the full length story in the black metal thread, but thought that is was high profile news enough to post in the metal thread as well. The short end of it. Apparently, Abbath could not come to an agreement (in court or otherwise) with his bandmates over the rights to the Immortal name, so he's moving on as a solo artist with a new album and Euro dates over the next few years. Just as well. All anyone wants to see is Abbath playing the Immortal classics.

Not sure the proper thread to ask, but was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for bands similar to Young and in the Way (specifically, their "When Life comes to Death") or Martyrdod's "In Extremis" album. Much appreciated!

If you go the punk thread, there was actually just a discussion about bands who mix black metal and hardcore like YaitW that you might find useful. Also a lot of making GBS threads on YaitW for being assholes.

Not quite in the same vein, but you might like Plebeian Grandstand. French band, very intense stuff (think Converge + Deathspell Omega) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kjpLPKsGFg

NTT posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbzXVq9WgbY I can't help but feel sort of weirded out that people have taken Meshuggah's style, which is all about being dense and oppressive and alien, and made it upbeat and poppy. What a weird world we live in. I do enjoy that, though, the way the electronic effects are incorporated is not too overbearing.

What a weird world we live in. It's not that weird. There's a huge overlap between people who like Meshuggah and dweeby prog stuff. Though I'd hazard a guess that band probably got their Meshuggah influence second hand through crap like Periphery or Hacktivist.

It doesn't blow me away, but I don't dislike it. My opinion isn't reliable though, If Arcturus took a dump on my chest and called it an album I'd buy it and call it album of the year
