A Muslim deli that did not stock kosher food would not be required to sell it. If they did stock it, and had a "No Christians" sign though, that would be illegal! So...just stop selling wedding cakes if you don't want to sell wedding cakes?

Not exactly the same, mixing meat and milk for instance is halal but not kosher. Some animals, camels for instance, are halal but not kosher and some, but not all, maddhabs permit the eating of shellfish. The method of slaughter is more or less the same though and as long as you know what the few differences are it's a lot easier to keep kosher in a Muslim kitchen, or halal in a Jewish kitchen, than it is in a Christian or non-Abrahamic one.

Not yet, because these RFRA's that are being passed right now are significantly different from previously passed ones, as they put wording in place to protect companies and businesses religious beliefs versus the previous RFRAs which only protected yourself and your church associated activities.

I would guess not since Indiana's is the first one that would seemingly permit discrimination that's passed, and I'd imagine business owners there are laying low until the hubbub dies down before they actually start acting on it.

Do we have any idea what level of usage this 'protection' against discrimination lawsuits is likely to result in? I would like to think the amount of people sufficiently fanatical to give up business to use it would be quite low, but perhaps my faith in human nature, or at least $ over bigotry is too high.

Crowsbeak posted:But isn't halal and kosher food almost the same? Kosher food is more stringent (mostly, other than cookin' with booze), so it would probably be a little bit of a pain in the rear end if they were required to serve to mega-Orthodox specifications. Lots of Muslims shop(ped) at kosher providers, though. It's a good way to get halal-compliant food if you're in a place without enough Muslim grocers / megacorp-supplied halal meat.
