Ghost in the Machine is S1, right? That's pretty loving bad. I mean, it's not as bad as First Person Shooter in S7 (which I think is hands-down the worst episode) but it's still awful. Nobody should miss Beyond the Sea, though. That's the episode that got me completely hooked, and it features Brad Dourif being absolutely goddamn amazing. Just started rewatching S8 and it really is a shame how bad things got. Doggett is a really cool character, particularly in Via Negativa - the back half of which features an incredible nightmare sequence in which Doggett can't tell if he's dreaming or not; Robert Patrick completely nails it and the whole sequence wouldn't feel out of place in a David Lynch movie. Huge waste of potential. I haven't got to the Reyes introduction yet but I remember her being irredeemably annoying.

No, the worst episode is the one with the Indian mystic who crawls up people's asses and rides around in them. First Person Shooter is pretty bad though. It's amazing how bad it is when it was written by a person who also produced a) a really good season 4 episode and b) a pile of acclaimed sci-fi novels.

Ghost in the Machine is bad, yes, but it's also really funny. "FILE...DELETED." (to be read in the fakest computer voice ever, like seriously it sounds like a guy mumbling into his hand) (First Person Shooter is the same way)

Back when I was in middle school I caught that episode on SyFy (or was it still the Sci-Fi Channel at that point?) and my older sister sat down and watched it with me. She spent the next few days teasing me about how bad that episode was.

All this worst episode chat and no one mentions the mummy urn that summons swarms of house cats? Or the Stephen King Chuckie knockoff? Or the one where the two Kathy Griffins cause fights everytime they get near each other? First Person Shooter is shameful though. I actually like a lot of the late season MotW episodes, although I'm pretty easily entertained. Like I always liked that one with Doggett in the Boston subway system, even if it was a little bit of a rehash of Darkness Falls.

Just watched the one where Robert Patrick fights the terminator. Coming off a high like Via Negativa, wow. The irony of the T1000 fighting an indestructible, self healing metal man is not lost on me but that episode sucked.

joepinetree posted:That is because that is the second time the black oil stuff appears in the series and as such they had not really decided what to do with it. The first time we see the black oil alien (piper maru), the black oil itself is entirely inconsequential. They do a bunch of tests and find out that the black oil is simply engine oil, and was just a vessel for the formless alien force. Then comes tunguska/terma, where the black oil is some form of alien bacteria, and is treated as a straight up crawling infection (doctor who gets infected goes into a coma). Then it comes back again in the movie, where it infects people, but this time turns them into hosts that will create one of the grey aliens. Then, by season 8, the black oil is back to mind controlling people. Iirc, the original idea for the black oil was that it was a singular creature, hopping from one body to another when required. But then as the core mythology arc became more defined, they decided to depict it as the method in which the Invading Aliens were planning to kill/gently caress up/enslave humanity when they came to Earth, which feeds into the whole "The Syndicate was telling the Invaders they were working on making hybrid slaves, but were really trying to make a black oil vaccine in secret" plot line. Realtalk: I actually dug that plot line. You think the Bad Guys of the series are just planning on selling out humanity to save their own assets, but what they were paying lip service to the invading aliens ("Status report 35244, we're really close to getting that stuff you wanted done, for sure!"), while secretly trying to invent something that would let them say "gently caress you, go home." Yea the reveal that the Syndicate has actually been working against the colonists really works well because it helps explain some of the inconsistencies in how they're presented early on. If they were all-in with the colonists or just working against them, some of their actions from the first few seasons wouldn't make much sense. The way they did it you can go back and watch those episodes and see at certain points they were sticking to the "program", and at others we're seeing their secret plans to fight back.

My favorite thing about the black oil is that in its first two appearances, it gets into an atmospheric diving suit and a hazmat suit. Then the alien rebels show up, and they keep it out by stitching their eyes and mouths shut.

Yeah, I was obsessed with this show as a kid, and still am to an extent. I can remember most of them because I taped X-Files on VHS back in the day and labeled the tapes. I've also re-watched the entire series a couple times as an adult. It's no different than Trekkies who can recite lines from just about every Star Trek episode ever.

Their human form with stitched orifices isn't native to them (there's at least one occasion of a rebel being disguised as a normal looking person - when the rebels try to sway the Syndicate away from the plan, and ultimately they should be greys, I think?). So the outward appearance of their disguise probably doesn't say much about their actual resistances.

In the finale he flat out says all his actions in the course of the show were motivated by his desire to see Mulder suffer, because....um.... It was just totally contradictory to a lot of other episodes and I hate that lazy one-dimensional bad guy crap. CSM hated Mulder, just because? Dumb. But if they don't retcon; I have no idea how to bring him back. A flashback would be borderline ridiculous because he has aged so much. I don't know what the CGI budget is. A recording, maybe. Seems like a waste to just hear him. Maybe he will appear as some sort of apparition like Krycek did in the finale. It will definitely be interesting to see how they structure mythology episodes.

At this point, I too am totally fine with an unabashed retcon of the finale. Hell, they can retcon the last two or three seasons of the mytharc while they're at it. Like I said earlier, they can use comic book logic and say it's "a different universe". Either way, it would be more conducive to writing a better story than considering it all canon and trying to explain CSM's death/re-birth.

And I am still, apparently, one of the very few people on earth who actually liked Reyes.
