No Glenn, that's not how the law works.

The cartoonist has no idea how RFRA works.

Worst analogy I read was in some goddamn religious crackpot's letter today, where he goes, "What if an airline decided to fly all its planes upside down, and some people didn't want to fly that airline anymore, and then the airline sued them because of that? What then huh?!"

Once again, my version of this was better. :colbert:

To be fair, I'm sure somebody else beat me to the Marriage/Civil Unions gag, too, though I have yet to see an example. Mister Beeg, you know a lot about cartoon history–are you aware of anyone else having done a gay rights-focused cartoon, about marriage/DOMA/Don't Ask, Don't Tell, referencing the segregated water fountains, before October, 2008?

(using it for Don't Ask, Don't Tell would've been really clever, actually, if the signs were labeled "Don't Ask" and "Don't Tell," respectively...)

Post 9-11 User posted:

He went beyond the segregation imagery to show that the GOP wouldn't bat an eye at gay people getting the drainage water for their fountain, really impressive coming from an rear end in a top hat like Stantis.

What? How? It looks to me like the design of the fountain is identical to the one from the Segregation photograph, at least the one I used as a reference for my own take on the matter:

Is it that extra little valve or knob the guy in the original picture is mostly obscuring? I omitted that by accident, it's a fair bet Stantis just didn't see it, in much the same way.

EDIT:

OK I don't know how I screwed that up, but here's what supposed to be here:

Trip Report

As I mentioned like a week or so ago, there was a lecture this afternoon on the SUNY-Albany campus given by Dr. Kent Worcester (Political Science, Marymount Manhattan College) on Politics, History, and Comics. In it, he focused on (among other things) ten fairly obscure hard-left cartoonists who were active mostly during the mid-20th century. They were from the US and UK, and ran the gamut of labor activists to anarchists to rust-belt communists, and one Trotskyite.*

They were, and I apologize for not having a ton of, you know, actual cartoons from these artists because, as mentioned above, they are really obscure lefties:

M. Vern Breitmayer (1889-1966)
A rust-belt fellow-traveler sort, member of the small Proletarian Party (which resisted Moscow's urging to join with the out-and-out Communists) in the 30s. Did most of his work for their paper, The Labor Digest, which is your standard doctrinaire screed-laden rag and died out in the 60s as they held to the standard old socialist line that social issues were distractions from economic/labor concerns and thus missed the boat of 60s leftism and Civil Rights activism. One of his better works,"The Thinking Worker," depicts your usual overall-wearing poor white worker sitting up by lamplight to read Capital. His later paintings are easily found online, but his cartoons are just this side of impossible to locate without going archive-diving.

John Olday (1905-1977)
Of mixed German-Scottish decent, participated in the 1918 Revolution in Berlin, running ammo to one of the left factions (don't know if it was the Sparticists or some other group). A Bisexual, he slept with some of the gay Nazis prior to the Night of the Long Knives purge, and used pillow talk to learn what anarchists/pacificts/others were going to be targeted by the SA, and thus helped them dodge the brownshirts. An anarchist to the bone, he skipped out of German a half-step ahead of the gestapo in 38; his wife worked with resistance groups out of Switzerland before being grabbed by the SS while on the wrong side of the line, and subsequently shot. Published primarily through Kropotkin's Freedom Press, such as the follow pamphlet which some of you may have seen before:

He also, interestingly, published a anarchist-tinged children's book called "The Blue Cow and her Fantastic Exploits."

Laura Slobe (1909-1958)
Published under the pen name of Laura Grey. She's our Trot who did work mainly for The Militant, an SWP rag.

Broke with the party and started doing Civil Rights work late in her career (she was down one lung due to tuberculosis in her youth, and died of pneumonia as a result).

She also was an accomplished scultper and painter, though just about all her paintings were done on WPA grants and subsequently destroyed during the 2nd Red Scare.

Jesse Cohen AKA "Carlo" (1909-1979)
A lady's man with many a notch on his belt, a slightly-fictionalized version of him appeared as a character in "Standing Fast," Harvey Swados' interwar novel about progressive struggle. Carlo was another anarchist with a particular grudge against Stalinist Russia.

Like Slobe, Carlo shifted towards social issues during the Civil Rights Era, with lynching in particular being a point of focus.

Ben Yoman (1911-2011)
Probably the most commercially successful of all the cartoonists Professor Worcester discussed, Yoman was syndicated in over 200 publications at the height of his career. A Popular Front member who favored labor issues, he also was possibly the first cartoonist to symbolize the general American Public as a woman.

Due to his popularity, Yomen was able to develop some stock characters he used from time to time, including this jerk, Congressman Dripp:

Also unlike many of these cartoonists, Yomen also published a collection of his works in "In Labor's Corner," which is still easy enough to find via Amazon.

Jimmy Friell (1912-1997)
A British Communist, Friell published under the pen name of "Gabriel," primarily in The Daily Worker, though he quit the Party after Khrushchev's secret speech and later gravitated to the Labour Party.

Pele de'Lappe (1916-2007)
A Social Realist, de'Lappe edited West Coast Communist before drawing for the West Oakland Beacon, an African-American paper. Very few of her cartoons can be found online, though much of her other drawings and art can.

Donald Rooum (1928-present)
Another British anarchist, he wrote for the paper Freedom. From a blue-collar background, Rooum's work unavoidably tends to lean heavily on class war subjects. I suspect many will like the anarchist cat he uses as a staple character.

bonus: the snooty jerk's lines in this last one are taken verbatim from a letter he got in response to a previous cartoon.

Phil Evans (1946-2014)
Evans was a heavy drinker and as such his cartoons often feature boozing, bars, and the like; he'd fit in well in this subforum. His work has a "modern industrial life is all drudgery for the working class" undertone running throughout it.

Like Yomen, Evans was among the minority to publish collections of his cartoons (in the difficult-to-find The Joke Works), plus an illustrated version of this one book you may have heard of.

Overall, it was a fun lecture and I got to ask a couple of questions, one in particular about the emergence of really overt racism of the likes we see routinely from Gary McCoy and Mike Lester (he put it down to the erosion of editorial oversight and the need to toss red meat to the rightwing base). As expected, the undergrads in attendance had nothing much to say one way or other, but the rest of us enjoyed ourselves.

Also, I would be remiss not to point out that Absurd Alhazred was also in attendance, and I while I found his ponytail to be less embarrassing than expected, I would not have worn such loud, orange pants.

*Hoping I got this quote from Professor Worcester mostly right: "She often drew what the party told her to; the SWP wasn't exactly known for being particularly democratic back then. And now, jeez. I'm sorry; if any of you students are currently member, leave."
