I love my job, but I've been with this company before in a different position for several years, and I still wonder what the gently caress these people are thinking. This is a service manager who SCREAMS at his employees in the middle of the service drive while multiple customers are literally standing right loving there, screams and THROWS poo poo in his office (which is a fish-bowl, customers can also see him in there), and according to all of the Service Writers is just plain lovely at his job and doesn't know what he's doing. On top of all of that, he was once fired from the very same position he currently holds for being lovely at his job, and then they hired him back. So he doesn't show up Monday without notice, leaves a loving note to the owner of the dealership that he's had enough of this poo poo, and now he's loving back again. Talking with the Service Writers, I asked them why the gently caress no one told the General Manager that they loving hated him, he was terrible, literally everyone is ecstatic that he's gone, etc. Turns out they ALL said that to the GM in some way shape or form, but NOPE GOTTA HAVE DUMB SHITBIRD BACK ASAP TL;DR

So I've had my NA MIata one month shy of a year and learned that I'm leaking coolant from the head gasket. My second replacement AC compressor has also failed and I should probably replace that to keep the wife happy on summer road trips. I don't have the time or qualifications for either job and am looking at $1800-$2000 for the combined jobs at the local Miata/performance shop, who do good work and who I trust. I'm already about $6-7k into the car: $4350 purchase price plus a new bumper cover + paint, the AC work with the past two compressors that failed, and a timing belt/water pump job. The car is at around 73500 miles now and the exterior, interior, top, wheels and (lovely all season) tires are all in pretty great shape. The owner of the shop I go to sees a lot of Miatas and races them; he comments on my paint everytime I've been in and says mine may be the nicest he's seen. He hinted at interest in picking it up for himself if I decide to sell it (he's not the kind of guy to compliment a customer car as a way of getting them to buy the work), and I got two other compliments running errands in the subsequent hour (I frequently get them every time I take it out). TLDR: it's visually in better shape than 99% of NAs out there. I'd feel stupid being $8-9k into a stock Miata, though, even if it is a really nice example. Part of me is wondering if it's time to jump ship and pick up an S2000, but that doesn't make much sense either. It could be that I'm over the hump and this is the last big money I have to spend on the Miata until the next timing job. It could be that whatever S2K I find would also need lots of work. I do know I didn't have much fun the last time I drove an S2000 at city/DD speeds compared to the Miata, but I didn't spend a lot of time with it. I don't know what to do here; the situation sucks either way. I'm going to look at an S2k this week and see if I genuinely like it as much around town. If not I guess I'll be the guy with the most expensive NA ever.

Shorter dick, how much have you had to drink tonight? And you need the William Shatner version of Rocket Man. "I'm a.. Rock..et... man..." Dog chat: a regular customer has a schizo boston terrier. The dog always snarls at me, then runs up to me and licks my hand, runs back inside and starts snarling at me from behind the owner, runs back out and licks me again, etc. Rinse, repeat. Still fresh on my mind since he was one of my last deliveries of the night. Bostons are awesome, but holy poo poo are they hyper. Our collie is a little dumber than a rock. Almost 8 years old, still not fully housebroken, he sees the dining room as his personal poo poo station. Walks into tables, chairs, etc. Toss him a piece of food or a treat and he snaps madly at the air before it's even left your hand, then looks confused when it bounces off of his face, and keeps looking up in the air for it (... when it's now on the ground). His vision is definitely not great, but he's one of the... specialist... dogs I've ever seen. The cat (The Dude), however, is too smart for his own good. He's figured out how to open a few doors in the house. Always looks really angry too, even when he's curled up and purring. Work chat: ever since our route started getting served by a different driver (for our own food shipments from our distributor), he shows up hours late.. sometimes over a day late, the record being a little over 2 days late. With the last driver, he showed up every Tuesday at 1:30pm, +/- about 15 minutes. The new guy has shown up 2 days late before (which caused us to actually have to shut the restaurant down - ran out of cheese, dough, pepperoni, and boxes). Today he showed up less than an hour before close (around 9:15pm Wed, when he was supposed to show up Tuesday at 1:30pm). The staff consisted of me, a very small female manager, and a female driver that's roughly Lana's size (from Archer). I got to put up about 1200 pounds worth of cheese, while having to rearrange the entire walk in because he dumped all the cheese directly in front of the shelf it goes on (which means I had to move all of that cheese just to get to the shelf, then rotate the cheese that was already there). They're 55 pound cases. I don't get why he's consistently late. I realize we're the last stop on his route, but he has the same number of stops that the last guy had, drives from Houston just like the last guy, and we're constantly getting shorted on tons of stuff (and plenty of other stuff is damaged - bags of flour are ripped open when we get them, or they show up wet, that kind of crap). We only got shorted one case of cheese this time; last week we got shorted nearly $800 (wholesale) of food. I know he's not the one loading the truck, but we've yet to have a delivery from him that hasn't had some sort of issue. I'm glad I wasn't the one closing, I noped the gently caress out of there once the super heavy poo poo was done. Yeah I'm a dick, but I was scheduled off at 9:30, and left at 10:30. We weren't even supposed to accept the truck if it showed up after 8pm. Doctor Teeth: We adopted him a week before I picked up our Nissan Leaf, The Electric Mayhem. Doc is fully grown in that photo; we think the time he spent starving in the woods after being dumped at a month old stunted his growth. He's currently sacked out after a good hike this afternoon; he has a thing for carrying 'sticks' that weigh nearly what he does. Today's log was around 40 pounds and he carried it about a mile and a half. Today at work an F-150 was parked next to me with at least 6 yappy terriers in the cab. I don't know how that person can stand the noise at home, let alone while driving...

You can buy all the tools to do a good job of refilling the system for like 250-300, too. Read motronic's thread, it is nowhere near as hard as you would think. Also, you can probably get all the tools to do the head gasket job and do it five times over before you have as much money into it* as you would pay the mechanic. I didn't know what a pinion seal was or how to change one in 2008. And had to read an online writeup to figure out how to change the radiator in a jeep. You can totally learn how to do anything you want on a car (except for maybe rotating assembly, transmission rebuild, steering box, and ring/pinion setup, those are super fiddly and require extreme attention to detail and patience some simply don't posess) and do it cheaper than a mechanic, if you want to. Hell, if it weren't for the fact that I want a warranty on it since glass is a pain in the rear end to ship and costs a lot, I would be doing the windshield in the Justy later today. Instead I called a glass company that a friend works for and he is doing it the $100 difference between materials and shop price is worth the warranty and not having to take the old one out myself. * yes I am ignoring time spent. I consider learning that stuff a life skill, it is incredibly empowering to realize you can do repairs that would cost most people thousands for $150 in parts and an afternoon, and opens the door to buying ever cheaper and more broken project cars. Gotta do something with the money you save, right? kastein fucked around with this message at 14:45 on Apr 2, 2015 |
