e X posted:SAC as a whole is kind of better than the movie, simply because they had a lot more time to explore the characters. I always feel like I'm alone in not liking the Ghost in the Shell movie. Visually it is absolutely gorgeous but beyond that I thought it was boring drag. I never really connected with the characters, I found the pacing to be off and it was just so dour. Even the source material had time for the funnies. Likewise for Innocence but that one I felt the director disappeared up his own butt while in the first film was more reserved. But Stand Alone Complex is just fantastic. I never saw the second season but season one is just fantastic.

Lordkat's show is worth a listen to for Holly's take on the gameshow, but you just kinda have to tune out Lordkat being awful and meanspirited. He has valid complaints, but he's so so angry and petty about them - and I used to be a big fan, in his chat most nights. I get him wanting to make fun of Channel Awesome's policies and failings, but when he starts doing things like picking at Brad for his marriage not working out, Spoony for having mental health issues, or Linkara for having a trans person as an ex-girlfriend, it just comes across as mean rather than funny. I guess he's trying to do the shock jock DJ thing, but he's way too close to the stuff he's talking about to do that. Plus, he always goes on and on about how he;s trolling and in it for the lulz etc, then is suprised when real companies and businesses don't want to be associated with him after he's used his brand name for stuff like that. Lordkat's lifestream used to be really chill and fun to have on as background noise and pop in to.

Trigun is best. Benny the Snake posted:That conflict involved a migrant population which was previously exploited for cheap labor to clean up nuclear fallout. It really resonated for me because I myself am a child of migrant workers and a first-gen citizen so it was like watching "What if the fuckers in congress decided to do x against my people," including revoke the 14th amendment which grants me citizenship. It's the reason why I have blood in the game known as immigration politics. The problem I think was that the cyberpunk/transhumanist aspects seemed more like trappings for the larger story. 2nd Gig is a better story overall, but not better sci-fi, if that makes sense.

That sounds more like a guilty pleasure. It's more like being pressured into thinking something's bad. If you like something, then on some level it is good, even if you don't know what those reasons are or can't adequately express them. There is some value to it. But when you're giving your opinion on anything, whether it be an anime, a video game, or whatever, then it's all subjective. The objective standards you're trying conform to is more or less the approval of some sort of social hegemony. It's sort of your opinion colored by the opinions of your peers, or maybe even overall societal pressures on what you are or are not supposed to like. I'm not quite sure if that's very objective. On the one hand, even I don't get where the anime derail comes from when it does, (too many closeted weebs lurking the thread?) and while I like discussing focused topics in that vein, the "hey let's all rattle off our favorite anime" thing seems like a probable thread-locker. On the other hand, it is hilarious when people complain about it. As with derails about Man of Steel or derails about GooberGolf, the topic will change back when there's more internet critic content people want to discuss. If a topic you don't like starts taking off, you can ignore the thread until it trickles back, or post some new internet critic content if you've got it. People talking about things that do not interest you and are not 100% on the listed topic of the thread is normal. No reason for the panic button. I do start pitching a bitch when people get really gross and lovely about a topic though, so hey, we all have our gear-grinders.

You can enjoy something while accepting that it objectively has little technical or artistic quality. Conversely, you can hate something while accepting that it's very well made. It doesn't have to be some sort of peer pressure thing; it can just be saying, "Yeah, I know this poo poo is the entertainment equivalent of store-brand snack cakes, but it has goofy vampire poo poo in it and I fukken love goofy vampire poo poo." I don't have to feel guilty about my awful tastes in entertainment, because I know that "bad" and "good" describe its quality and are not some kind of moral judgment. I can accept that they suck but I still love them because they appeal to some stupid interest I have.

SFDebris did his "Forbidden Planet" review a couple of days ago and as expected its pretty drat solid. He's exceptional at really giving context to the time period in which these films were made, and some of the political attitudes you see in them. I'd love to see him do something like "Silent Running" or "Colossus: The Forbin Project" as those are very underseen and have a lot of social commentary going on in them.

I first heard about Trumbul watching Jodorowsky's Dune. He's definitely a technical wizard, though now that you mention the other films he's worked on, I can definitely say he's a very sterile effects artist. Everything is crisp and clean, even the flying shots in Blade Runner.
