You're talking about that guy charged with criminal fraud for using his student loan money to fund a business venture? That's probably not the same animal for numerous reasons. But yes there is probably a line you can cross.

I know a dude that maxed his student loans and used the excess for a house down payment. He rented 3 rooms and made enough to cover the payment, and the student loan interest. It feels stupid, but also feels really clever in some bravado sense. He also had the option of being gifted a stipend through college, or a '01 Porsche Carrera. You can guess which he chose.

If you were going to travel for four months in September, what would be the most BFCest way to travel? I'm thinking like bike tour around rural China would be pretty awesome and also frugal.

By contrast, SE Asia is a lot easier, and you'll be getting in to the cool (nicer season) over September-January. Thailand/Laos/Cambodia/Vietnam get most of the tourist traffic (not without reason, they're very nice to visit), personally I'd like to go back to Borneo or island-hop across Indonesia. My dream SEA trip is to buy another motorbike in Vietnam and ride it south (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia) until it blows up or I run out of time/money. BFC-est might be to do a working holiday, live in a van and make $20/hr picking fruit in Australia, surf on the weekends. Pompous Rhombus fucked around with this message at 01:17 on Apr 4, 2015 |

Cycling doesn't seem to cause any problems yet though, so I want to get a big bike trip under my belt because I like it so much. Is there camping in the countryside in SE Asia? I heard that it's not possible in China.

China has gotten rather expensive in recent times and if you're in the wrong area things could get a bit stabby or you wake up with some missing organs. SE asia if probably more bang for your buck and not so limiting with language. I went through northern and southern China but my group knows people and had a lot of people who could speak Mandarin and Cantonese. Althought southern China a lot of people don't speak Cantonese these days. The time I went to negotiate a deal in Cantonese they couldn't understand wtf I was saying.

You can do whatever on a WHV visa, so if you've got retail/food service/coffee making/whatever experience, can have a go with that. I am pretty sure you can camp in SEA, but with guesthouses being as cheap as they are very few people bother. The yen is really weak right now, depending on your budget Japan might be another one to consider (due to cold, would probably just do September/October though). There are special hostels called Rider's Houses that are just for motorcyclists/bicycle tourists, as well as plenty of remote areas you can pitch a tent on the sly, and cheap hot spring places to shower at the next day for cheap. You can get a filling meal at a basic restaurant for ~$6-8, less if you don't mind eating out of the (ubiquitous) convenience stores. Super safe country and beautiful, tons of stuff to see.

I did a bad thing. When I switched my investment account from the target retirement fund to VTSAX, I wasn't aware that I'd incur capital gains (exchanging isn't the same as selling, I thought ). Ended up being short term, so I'm out 10% of my gains.

I have a disappointment too. Toilet started gargling late night thursday. Called the plumber, who said it sounded like a sewer issue. Sewage specialist came out and ran a camera after cleaning the pipes. Four hundred dollars later, we find Both sloped connections to the main line are broken at the joints and will require excavation for repair. The slippage is causing all tp to catch at the joint. No more tp until we get it fixed, and we're looking at a few grand probably for the repairs. Faaaaahhhhccckkkk. Thank god for that 5k emergency fund. Third time in the last year I've had to eat into it substantially for home repairs.

I hope it doesn't cost the full $5k. I had about 75' of copper water main run in my last house for about $2k. Sewer line should be much cheaper, the main expense would be digging it up. It's low pressure, do you can put a repair fitting on it without much risk of pushing the problem further down the line. In the end, I bet they just dig it up and slap something like this on it while maintaining its slope (which should be accomplished automatically by rejoining the broken pipes). non-poop chat. I switched my Verizon 5s iphone to Page Plus and it was alright for a few months, but they keep loving me on the data part of my plan... Never seems to reset so the speed is always choked to the point of being non-functional (yes, I am on wifi wherever possible.) I emailed them about it so I'm hoping to get a small refund or credit back, but I'd like to switch to Credo. My screen has been broken three times since the switch and I'm tired of having to replace it. My roommate has it, works great for her and she commutes to a similar area as I do. I was going to buy my new phone outright from them and use their service, but the insurance seemed steep and Im not sure they insure phones you arent leasing from them. Whats a good way to insure an iphone against damage/theft that isn't through your carrier? BFC Note: yes, yes, iPhone is bad with money, blah blah blah. Honestly, it's indispensable to me for work, I must have smart phone capabilities, use certain apps, etc. A few years ago I had various droid phones and it was a pain. I can't switch to metro PCS or a dumb phone.

I drop my phone several times a day. I insure against this by putting it in an otterbox. I am a huge clumsy child but then I just put the money I would be paying towards insurance into a pile for a new phone later.

Lazerbeam posted:What criteria should I consider when compare two job offers? There's a lot to consider. Pay, benefits, hours working/week, company culture, how long the commute is, which job responsibilities you'll enjoy more, etc. A few of these things are easy, but others are entirely up to your preferences. Are you willing to make some more money for a longer commute? How about sacrificing pay for a more relaxed setting? It will probably require some thinking and listing of your priorities.

To expand on benefits: health care options and cost (HDHP or a traditional plan, HSA option, how much does the company contribute to the HSA, are vision and dental included, are they included at an additional cost, what's the cost of individual vs indifivual+spouse), retirement benefits (does the company offer a 401k, do they have a Roth 401k option, what is their matching amount, do they still offer a pension, how is the payout calculated), corporate dress code, are flexible working hours optional, is working remotely possible, how much vacation do you get per year and how fast does the number of vacation days go up, how many personal days do you get per year, what's the maternity/paternity leave policy, what are the offices like where you will be working, is there travel (mandatory/optional/how far in advance can it be planned). These are all things I would consider before taking a job at a new company.

If you had to compare roughly similar* jobs where the biggest difference was contract versus "permanent", what factors would you weigh to consider each? The permanent position is likely to pay 20% less, but I don't have a good picture of the benefits that come with perm at that job? *- I have two offers for PM jobs at large banks. The cultures or bosses could be very different, but at least thus far I haven't found anything to tell me much about the contract one. The "perm" one I've been contract at for the last 18 months and have generally enjoyed it, although the new position would be for a different boss I have not worked much with.
