There are a couple sit down interviews like in the cafe and stuff but the whole film is "unedited" so it doesn't have any of the polish one usually associates with mockumentaries. It's all presented as rough footage which is why I guess it gets caught up in the "found footage" genre occasionally.

I can't agree on that. V/H/S/2 is better than either V/H/S or Viral. It's the closest to being a new media version of Creepshow. The other two are basically just Videodrome, once writ too small, then again writ too large.

The best part is how it's not enough that Kevin Sorbo is an awful atheist, he is also literally evil and makes menacing supervillain speeches about how he's going to destroy the kid's entire life. And the premise is just him saying "FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS CLASS let's agree that God is Dead so we can talk about other philosophy" and somehow this is an outrage that WILL NOT STAND. Like he seriously tells the kid "dude I don't care if you pray tonight or whatever I'm just saying FOR THIS CLASS let's skip the argument entirely". I think that's pretty reasonable

Netflix has devolved badly in the last 3-5 years. I know it's not their fault but the catalog is now like 85% B-class documentaries/documercials, horror sequels, and occasionally a good movie or TV show. It seems like they hardly add anything older than 30 years ago to the streaming catalog anymore. What I want is pretty much the streaming equivalent of channels like TCM, but most older films are only streamable a la carte on services like Amazon and VUDU. There is the Warner Archive but that is pretty B-quality stuff and they know it. Hulu is good for the Criterion Collection, but what do you do when you want to watch older movies that are... I dunno, middlebrow? Like old musicals, comedies, etc.?

Amazon Prime has some deep cuts from the 60s that are kind of in the exploitation realm, but all stuff I had never heard of before.

Literally the entire catalogue of past Fantastic Fest entries has been on instant at one point or another.

Movies like Marty, The Apartment and The Hustler were added just a couple months ago. They added a number of old westerns a few months before that. It's not the most common category they add, but there's always some decent selection that's older than 30 years. If you're really looking for alternatives, you could also look at the lists of old movies that get uploaded to Youtube. Most of it is  , but some of it is public domain stuff like Suddenly. And some of it is stuff that isn't public domain but has slipped through the rights ownership cracks over the years and never came out to DVD, so it's still the only way to see those movies short of finding old VHS tapes.

Some of the best stuff TCM shows is in the middle of the night. Being able to watch that stuff on demand is great. I dread the day that I finally cut the cord and lose access to TCM.

I watched VHS Viral, and I wanted to stopped at Bonestorm because nothing will get better than that. (It didn't) Those kids owned. They're dicks, but they sorta won me over when they gave the homeless dude the bar and the cigarette, and then completely won me over when they started kicking rear end. Horror protagonists fighting back will never not be awesome to me. I guess everything was alright. But Bonestorm was fun.

D-D-DDOUBLE POST I am less than 3 minutes into the movie, but I highly recommend Wolfcop to everyone who is currently breathing. This movie is clearly a modern masterpiece and not watching it is like pissing on the Mona Lisa.

Dreamcatcher showed up recently on canadian Netflix. It's surprisingly not terrible if you approach it as a light buddy comedy. Special effects hold up well, the cast is doing a good job, even the plot is moving along with purpose.

Dreamcatcher has the exact same appeal as Wolfcop, but was made as a serious adaption to a garbage Steven King novel. Dreamcatcher has a mind boggling cast for the kind of stupid movie it is. I think Morgan Freeman must have just said gently caress it and dialed up the hammy acting as hard as he possible could. His eyebrows, at the very least, are up to 11.
