I live in a city with 100 speed cameras per square mile. You can easily rack up a ton of tickets if you are just here visiting and aren't familiar with their locations. From what I've seen, all they do is cause people to slam on their brakes just before passing one. I wish my bike had a tail tidy kit to allow me to mount the plate where it can't be seen

Yeah except where I live: Exceeding the speed limit fixed by not more than 10 km/h. 10 Exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/h but not more than 20 km/h 20 Exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h but not more than 30 km/h 35 Exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 km/h but not more than 35 km/h 40 Exceeding the speed limit by more than 35 km/h 50 100 demerit points results in an automatic 3 month license loss. So it's become more than just a revenue gathering exercise and is now yet another way for The Man to keep me down.

The funniest speed cameras are the average speed cameras. They record your plate at sections on the road and if you pass between the cameras quicker than you should you get a ticket. Only places i know of them are on the A14 around Cambridge (very busy bit of road with lots of accidents), the roadworks on the A1 north or York (massive set of roadworks adding a 3rd lane) and on the Cat and Fiddle road in the Peak District where far too many weekend power rangers run out of talent and often life. Best thing about them is that they face the front of the vehicle so they can get a picture of who was driving as well as the number plate.

In the Uk, if you exceed by no more than 10% + 5mph (or similar) you can pay £30 and get 3 points on your license, or about £100 to go to a "Driving awareness course" and you get no points, but you can only do that once a year. Anything from there up to 25mph over the limit is a standard £30 and 3 points with no option to take a course. If you get 12 points over 3 years, you're toast. 25mph+ over and you lose your license, have to retake the test and I think it's a 2 year ban anyway. The test is no joke here either, and if you are retaking after a ban it's double the duration. That said, most of the speed cameras here are deactivated because the government said they refused to pay for what they thought should be a self sustaining part of the police service, so most of them are shut off. Police will pull you over for speeding, but if you're polite you can get away scot free. Police are so used to dealing with arseholes they'll generally turn a blind eye if you take the time to dismount and remove your helmet and apologise. Mentioning that you're a nurse helps. My sister was pulled over doing 85 in a 50, had a malfunctioning tail light and no road tax and so rightly should have been banned with a huge fine, but she was cheerful and talkative and he let her off with some points.

Based on everything I hear here, Sweden seems like a loving paradise these days when it comes to traffic laws. No silly points, pretty low fines and higher speed limits (compared to the other scandi countries), radar jammers and camera warning systems are allowed, most traffic cameras are put up in "reasonable" places (outside schools and poo poo like that instead of on empty country roads with 90kmh limits), and JESUS loving CHRIST how about those aussies and canadicks and US states where they have "Squealing Tires Citations", that is just beyond bizarre. Was it Sagebrush that lives somewhere where you could get jailtime and have your car impounded for "illegal street racing" which could mean that you accelerated faster than a turtle alongside another car?

So random question that came up in the pub the other night - what would be the symptoms of valves needing adjustment? We guessed that it would depend on which valves and how far out of wack they are, but could be almost anything from loss of power and higher fuel consumption all the way out to plug fouling, cat poisoning, detonation - basically the lupus of engine problems. (One of my mates just got stung for 400 quid for doing the clearances on his Fazer - yet more proof of the superiority of v-twins - and we were wondering just how bad you could get away with letting them go)

You get burned valves, leading to no compression, leading to an engine that barely starts and runs. Also v-twin superiority, my arse. If it's the kind you have to remove the cams for, I4's have half the cams

Hard starting when hot. Otherwise, you're not going to see any symptoms until things are just plum fuckered. As clearances get smaller, the heat expansion eventually causes the valve to hit zero clearance and hang out a bit, meaning you lose compression and the bike becomes hard to start. Run it like that for too long and the valve burns because a significant part of its cooling is heat transfer to the head when it is closed. You're not going to see any other real symptoms, maybe a bit of a hunting idle.

My ninja had extremely tight exhaust valves. It would stall at stops/lights every time unless I held the throttle open. And yeah, hard to start even when warmed up.

My dad says he'll give me his 1982 GS1100E if I want it and can ship it from him to me. (WI to San Francisco.) It's in perfect shape, probably 15k miles on it, meticulously maintained. Should I do it? It'd be my only bike for the next few years as I only have space for one right now.
