Here are some cool songs: I saw Mourn on Monday and they rule. They're a bunch of kids from Barcelona who play really cool poppy punk stuff. Their album's really good, if short, but they already had 3 or 4 new tracks when I saw them, so I'm pretty optimistic they'll get a second one out soon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jgohc-pUtGM Then I saw Lower Dens on Tuesday, and was totally blown away. They sounded way better than I expected live, though they had a few false starts as they tried to get their various instruments in order for their newer stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n78GkK7LC9Y Also the first FFS song is out and it's pretty much what I expected, I'm looking forward to this album and hope they announce some American tour dates soon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3V4KfeJBCQ jiffypop45 posted:SiriusXMU gave the relatively new PC Music label a pretty high talking up during their SXSW coverage. Anyone checked out their stuff? It's mostly poppy/electronic music with samples you'd expect from a Venetian Snares album. I love PC Music. I feel like what they're doing is going to be pretty shortlived (see: vaporwave), but it's really fun right now. SOPHIE's stuff seems the strongest (mainly because it's the most club-friendly, BIPP is a goddamn banger), but it's all good across the board. I actually went through the trouble of downloading all of their releases and throwing them together in a playlist, and it's funny how it all feels like it could be by one or two people. It seems like a pretty cohesive sound. I really like Pretty Green by Spinee, which sounds like a song composed of only the build-ups from big EDM hits

I finally get to see Alvvays tonight after having listened to their debut album a ridiculous number of times. I remember seeing Molly Rankin solo a few years ago at CMJ and made a note to check out more of her stuff, but aside from an EP there was nothing and I forgot about her until Alvvays and their jangle-pop selves came along. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZHPCcFmEjc

Part of Courtney Barnett's tour in the states will be with Darren Hanlon, including a stop in Atlanta in June that hopefully I can get to. I can't get over how good Courtney's album is, and Darren's newest album just came out last month and is also good.

Death Cab did a small, intimate set for NPR with just vocals, bass and piano. They play Black Sun, No Room In Frame, Your Heart Is An Empty Room and Passenger Seat. Honestly, I think I like the first 2 more than their respective album versions.

My Morning Jacket's new one leaked, I like all the songs that are on it more than the two released so far, its really good. I will try to see them sometime this summer, I've seen them 7 or 8 times starting in 2005 and haven't since 2012 so it would be nostalgic yet fresh at the same time.

New Mountain Goats isn't the most consistent album he's done but the best tracks are among his best ever. "Choked Out" is just loving awesome.

Today, for the first time in years, I listened to Shifting Skin. In January 2001, I had just returned home to the DC area from my first trip to Maine, which was unbelievably awesome, and I had a Christmas gift card to Tower Records to redeem. I must've found out about On by searching fansites for Failure stuff earlier (I don't remember exactly), so Shifting Skin was one of the albums I got. Being a Ken Andrews follow-up to Fantastic Planet, I was kinda expecting more Failure, so I was kind of shocked by the bright synth-rock-pop that greeted me. However, my musical roots in 80's top-40 and easy listening left me somewhat open-minded, so Shifting Skin really grew on me. Strangely, the album to this day reminds me of that trip to Maine, even though I hadn't heard it until I got back. Back then it didn't get the attention it deserved, hopefully more people will discover it now that similar music is trending in the rock scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NqiN4LwqN8

The absolute greatest thing about the new Mountain Goats record, if nothing else, is that John Darnielle has converted Chavo Guerrero into a big time Mountain Goats fanboy. It's hilarious and endearing. I can't imagine what it must be like to be so thoroughly recognized and appreciated by one of your childhood heroes. Dude can't get enough of the goat man. https://twitter.com/chavoclassic

I'm still not sure how I feel about the album. I would kill to have a stripped down version that had some of the songs be just JD and a guitar/piano, but as a whole, I find myself happy that this is the first new Mountain Goats album I've gotten to experience as a fan. Werewolf Gimmick loving blew me away when it came on, and I can't wait to hear that poo poo live. Also, track down Blood Capsules if you can, it's goddamn gorgeous and fun.
