As much as that infamous episode makes people flip their tables (and rightfully so!), the one thing that absolutely kills me is Bucock's death. It's really the ultimate representation of LoGH's central conflict. People have brought up so far how it pits a well-run dictatorship against a poorly run democracy and asks what is preferable, but Bucock's last words put into perspective just how different Reinhard and Yang's lives are. Reinhard is the one that ultimately succeeds at his grandiose goals, the harbinger of change and reform for pretty much the entirety of humankind once he's done, but he is alone. The two people he cares about the most are forever beyond his grasp, and though he has scores of amazingly capable and loyal subjects that will fight and kill and die for him, they will never stand at his same height: even when he hooks up with Hildegarde and it's clear there is affection between both of them, there is an uncrossable gap between them, a distance neither of them can bridge. Yang, though? He gets poo poo on, he fights to serve and protect a government that hates him and that he despises in return, and ultimately his efforts end up being in vain, but he is not alone. The people that stand with him will fight and kill and die for Yang, just as Reinhard's underlings, but they will also laugh with him and drink with him and play pranks on him and dunk him at space chess for the very same reason: they are his friends, they ride with him because fighting space wars is something you do for your buddies, and the love between Yang and Frederica is genuine, heartfelt and reciprocated. Reinhard's offer to Bucock is tempting, glory and respect from the greatest man in the galaxy, and he turns it down gently because there is nothing Reinhard can offer the old man. It's not even about loyalty to his own failing space nation, it's turning his back to a life of solitude and suffocating social structure - that is not worth dying for, but friends and drinks and picnics and laughter is. It hits me particularly hard because, well, I'm not American - and in my country, the military did not toast to democracy, they trampled on it and murdered and tortured the people they swore to protect and looted the country for themselves, but Bucock makes the kind of stand I wish they had made. tl;dr LOGH is loving awesome go watch it yesterday.

It still hurts. One of the linked videos also delves in what I was talking about - after Yang proposes to Frederica, Cazellnu and Julian are drinking to that and it's obvious to Cazellnu that Julian had a thing for Frederica, so he gives him the best advice he can give the kid. He cares for his friend, and you see this happening all the time with Yang's crew. In the Imperial side, the only people that really have this kind of closeness are Reinhard and Kircheis, and of course Mittermeyer and Reuenthal.

Yeah, it's very noticeable that Reinhard's crew are a team that can work together and respect one another, but most of them are not friends.

I started watching this show about a month ago. I'm close to halfway through (ep 48) and the slow collapse of the Alliance is killing me. I'm banging on the table and oohing at the battles like a drat lunatic. Also, I think it's ruining my ability to enjoy the space dramas that I so dearly love and I haven't even finished the show. LoGH is a goddamn revelation, guys.

Something I've realized is that, even though this thread doesn't get a lot of activity, the slow drip of people popping in to say that they've started watching this show and that it's rocking their world is pretty good. Also, I really like this post: Traveller posted:As much as that infamous episode makes people flip their tables (and rightfully so!), the one thing that absolutely kills me is Bucock's death.

If for nothing else, this series shows what would happen if two Death Stars had it out and damned if it wasn't amazing.

LoGH is a goddamn revelation, guys. It really is amazing. It just seems so ballsy with some of the developments while making them work. I really admire that the show took this trend of the collapsing FPA and lets it fully play out, not only until the Alliance surrenders, but even keeps going beyond that to the former FPA territories becoming the new provinces of the Reich. I feel like a lot of lesser shows would have either pulled back from completely wiping out one of the major sides, or if they didn't, would completely fumble it. Granted, I do feel like LoGH drops off toward the end, but even then I think it's still pretty good and only is bad in comparison to the incredibly strong first 3/4ths..

(last 25 eps semi spoilers) It's not bad at all, it just not as good, part of it being for cast issues, and part of it, for me at least, the last quarter is almost all tragedy. I've seen it before so I tend to not feel like subjecting myself to it during rewatches. You are just so connected the these characters by the end that even though it's not like, tomino at the end of a gundam show, it's still really affecting

4th season: Iserlohn needed more development. The 4th season is incredibly Reich-heavy especially the first half, where you basically have one Iserlohn-centric episode and maybe 4-5 scenes after that until Reuental is defeated. It also never made sense to me that Iserlohn basically let Frederica and Julian inherit power from Yang on anything but a short-term basis. We never saw the Iserlohn "Republic" engage any kind of democracy. That section (which I guess corresponds to the 9th novel) could've been improved by maybe having them struggle a little bit more keeping control and actually running things, especially isolated from trade and such. There's some token dialogue about how much they miss Yang but it doesn't have any concrete consequences.

Jesus, why was it never brought Stateside? The show is a really hard sell. I've never been successful in getting anyone I know to watch more than the first movie or a couple of episodes. 1. It's anime. 2. It's really long. 3. It isn't usually 'fun'. 4. It's 'old'. There are lots of people even on ADTRW who avoid it for one or more of those reasons.

Why did no one translate a 110 episode, dialogue-heavy, history-book-styled show with dated animation and which took a decade to originally release? Not sure. Real talk though, I'm pretty sure that a few companies have tried and failed due to licensing costs vs potential profit. It would be nice, because obviously the show is amazing, but you just gotta spread the word the old-fashioned way. I personally have gotten 6 or so people to watch it through high praise and general prodding. Just get your friends who enjoy political dramas, war, history or old-school sci-fi to watch My Conquest is the Sea of Stars, and they'll usually be pretty on board for the rest.

I like the fourth season, although I've only seen the show once and that was last summer, so maybe it won't stand up as well when I inevitably rewatch the show. That being said: It's true, it is pretty much all tragedy all the time, but it works so drat well, the show doesn't drop off so much as it sobers up. This is the end of an era. Yang, Reinhard, and all of these other Great Men have played their part but history must move on. The tone and pacing fit perfectly. Imagine how DC must have been from the time Lincoln was shot until he died next morning. That's basically the entire season.

OddObserver posted:The music itself is, but particular performances are still protected by copyright. Yeah it would be one thing if they had, say gotten the japan philharmonic (or whatever) to record a performance just for the show that the company owned the copyright to, but almost all the music in LoGH are the iconic performances ofof those pieces by symphonies from around the world. Some of these performances may have questionable copyright given their age, but if you'll take a look at the LoGH OST, you'll see how even a few performances being public domain pales in the face of the shear volume of musical performances used in the series. In either case, the whole series costs literally thousands of dollars in japan, and they expect it to somehow sell for thousands of dollars over here. Putting it out on DVD / bluray is almost entirely out of the question anyway for a US distributor, and the show is of such a specific niche that broadcasting is almost entirely out of the question as well. The very best we can hope for in terms of localization is if one of the streaming distributors were to get ahold of the rights to do that, because for whatever reason japanese media companies apparently are much less demandy when it comes to granting those at non-ludicrous prices. I would not expect to ever see a dub for LoGH.

There's no chance it would be any good anyway. They might get some good talent for a few major characters but you know they'd end up having the same guy do 20 different minor character voices and they'd all be obvious duplicates and bad...and since there's hundreds of characters...yeah.

And I'd accept a crappy dub if it meant that I could access the subs legally. Just finished the second season and HOLY poo poo. The battle of Vermillion was one twist after another--I spent the first half wondering how Yang would pull through and then the second half how Reinhard would survive. That last minute ceasefire was painful to watch, and I teared up a little when Yang sent Merkatz off on Operation Sherwood. Why the hell do I feel patriotic for a country that doesn't even exist?? I'm not looking forward to the Earth Cult plot, though. Ominous, blatantly evil dudes in blatantly evil robes seems so out of place in the complex universe of LoGH. Still, the show hasn't disappointed me yet. And hey, Yang finally got his pension!

A more modern take on the terraists might be focused on religion/extremism and what drives people to that sort of thinking/actions and work better than DnD-playing Satanists. The theme/idea is "kinda" there already, it's just the presentation that's sorta lacking. The Terraists seem to be used more as a cheap writing tool for sudden assassination plots or to make bad people look better in comparison than any serious take on religion/fallen power in a backwater trying to crawl back to relevance.
