SNCOs are certainly treated a bit different, but not quite to the private treefort that the chiefs have built themselves.

Officer/Enlisted separations are a bit different story, but there should be some more fluidity between them. Ultimately, middle management does serve some purpose and shouldn't be abolished entirely.

I think the CPO culture is a bit outdated for today's professional all volunteer Navy. Especially as the Navy becomes smaller and smaller. Same thing with some of the officer communities. Our service is technically oriented and leadership ability is more based on technical competency not rank anyways. We all know of commands/units where some E5 is the backbone or some O2 is the one that actually gets things done. Tends to be better at higher officer ranks but still you some people that have made it to LCDR or CDR and not worth a drat.

We need to reform/abolish CPO/Wardroom/FCPO and other BS and focus more on technical competency for leadership and management positions. If we can abolish enlisted/officer rank structure and just have a unified rank structure that's stovepiped based on duties and roles and authority is based on responsibility and specialization.

Alas it will never happen but one can dream. It would mean DOD wide reform, but even going towards something like the GS pay scale would make more sense. Everybody is on the same pay system and appropriately compensated based on experience/responsibility/ability. Get rid of toxic cultures such as goat locker etc...

Modern sailors aren't broken by class divides like before where enlisted = lower class and officer = upper. Yeah I know more lower income and minorities enlist but the divide is less and changing the system can further move towards a meritocracy.

Aside from striking out one little word, I agree with everything you've just said. Sadly, it's the good people that get out due to the "bullshit" and the lovely people who bought in to that lovely mentality of the caste system who go on perpetuating it. I think the Navy thread knows of my distaste for the elitism that comes with making E-7 in the Navy (different uniforms, separate berthing, separate dining, etc.) along with some of the holier-than-thou attitudes that a small group of the nobles have. Just because someone has been in the Navy for 15+ years does not mean they are good at their job- just because someone is of a certain pay grade doesn't mean they have what it takes to be a leader. I think the Marine Corps kind of got it right by separating job specialist versus management guy with the master sergeant or first sergeant, only it needs to happen at a more junior level like E-4.

Edit: one other small thing I disagree with above is just because a guy is technically sound in his field does not mean he has the ability to lead/manage a work center. I've seen people who excel at their job but suck at leading.

The divide still exists within the GS pay structure, and definitely between GS/W* schedules.

Oh my god so much. The last two days have been spent listening to old Navy now GS dudes who retired at HYT bitching about the new Navy and how we suck at it.

It seems like the folks advancing to E-7 lately are folks who are good at neither. They're really good at hanging out in the CPO mess and the Bar wearing NAVY CHIEF PRIDE HOOYAH poo poo and backstabbing and breaking rules while hammering young people who are better educated than them for stupid poo poo like curfew violations. So many poo poo CPOs on the waterfront who don't know a thing about PMS or their gear or leading a division.

Just out of curiosity, how do they evaluate chiefs against each other? Also, what's the point if you have no intentions on becoming a Force or MCPON?

Well if the tablets are locked to only the crap they wanted us to learn about in the blue jackets manual (which we werent allowed to look at less we break the binding and ruin an inspection) and that other useless guide, you know the one with missing words you could only get from terrible lectures. So many loving typos. Perhaps a flash card app. Wouldnt be the end the world.
