General Battuta posted:Early versions of the game had actual long-range gunnery duels of the type you'd expect from a naval game; currently ranges on guns are compressed. This is the original Warships UI. This sounds like a tedious game that would take forever to play. I wouldn't want to manually guess where someone would be 30 seconds after I click a button. Real life sailors didn't even do that, they fed a bunch of data into a computer that calculated the final destination for them. This game doesn't have to simulate real life, it just has to be fun. Reduce damage across the board and call it a day.

As to WoWS, this game has some serious issues (e.g. CV's being broken in drat near every way), but one of the biggest ones is that fundamentally the game seems to have been built with a different intention in mind, and if the description of Alpha is correct I now understand why. Seriously the Russian gamers are killing these types of games, if they had just stuck to their guns and ignored the Russians and delivered the same game as in Alpha this game would have promise but as for now its just a mess and while fun for a quick game I just cant see myself spending any money on it as its just very samey and very little skill. As to the open map, honestly with the stupid spotting mechanics in this game it could work so has to be worth a test.

Manually guessing where somebody will be 30 seconds after we click a button is what we do now. It looks like the alpha had more automation in shot calculation and you actually got a visual footprint of where your shells would land.

You're in luck, shell hang time was long enough accurately predicting enemy locations 20 seconds from then wasn't in the cards anyway, because the shells hung long enough that anybody zig zagging may or may have not turned by that point so you just flung shells out and hoped. Tunnel vision was way worse, as you could imagine if people spent five to ten minutes not looking at their ship. In close though you could drop blockshot on destroyers from 10 km out no big deal, and if it wasn't dead by five you screwed up. With the overhead view the problem was you could see the enemy's movement so well that if they didn't have time to turn, you'd be able to consistently drop volleys on them, and it'd literally be lead calculation dps race the game. Ship classes were pretty balanced, according to the old idea of a battleship being worth two cruisers or four destroyers. That likely isn't what people would want. If they implement bouyancy and make it matter at all that'll be the first time it has mattered. xthetenth fucked around with this message at 15:02 on Apr 7, 2015 |

Games can go from broken unfun pieces of poo poo to actually really fun in a year. It's a lot of time to make changes to a game. If you're really not having fun, you might want to just quit and come back when the game is finished rather than burn out on whats there right now.

I'd say WoT actually kept improving over time as I played it, until they ran out of ideas and made it impossible to play with the introduction personal missions. That said, I'm also really bored of this beta right now, for the same reasons that have already been mentioned a dozen times. Hopefully they'll find a way to make the ships less same-y within a given class so that unlocking a new ship actually feels like a reward instead of "the same ship but slightly better/worse."

So, I just played the ocean map... It was pretty cool actually. Battleships and Crusiers grouped up and destroyers skirmished in the middle of the map while laying down smoke. Long lances were actually useful to break up lines. If the map was a little bigger; you could direct your scout planes, and destroyers had better spotting range/ got spotting assists it would honestly be pretty great.

I know we've been over this already, but why the hell did they patch the game, change Piasters to Tokens, and then didn't give us any Tokens? And no Token missions yet, I take it. Just great. The 800mb's for another obscure Russian cruiser and a couple of new maps (one which is supposedly just OPEN WATER) with balance changes sounds extremely strange too. Goddamn it, I just wanted some more ship slots!

This game really rules sometimes though. Just had a match in my nagato on the new map (not the ocean one) and I was the top tier cool big guy, with a bunch of cruisers and dds on both teams, and a fuso and saipan on the other (So I was the only BB on my team). I spent the first part of the match mostly dodging torpedoes and duking it out with whoever I could get my guns targeted on while driving like an rear end in a top hat to avoid the carrier torps and tons of destroyers all over, but the rest of my team pretty much evaporated. I killed the enemy BB, and my teammates got two or 3 other ships, but it was me, two destroyers, and two cruisers up against a carrier, 4 or 5 cruisers (clevelands and mogamis, mostly) and a half dozen destroyers. My support died and took a couple more enemies with them, and left me against a half dozen ships alone, and we were way behind on points so I had to get to the cap circles to stop the bleeding. Cue me running a gauntlet of cruiser and destroyer fire, lashing out and smiting anyone I could while my secondaries were chewing poo poo up, dodging torpedo salvoes from pretty much everyone including torpedo bombers. I have the last two combat ships down to very low hp, like one shot away from dead (or a few seconds sustained fire from secondaries), but I'm very badly wounded and finally my luck runs out with the torpedo dodging as I eat 3 torpedos from the carrier's bombers as I'm turning to avoid another spread of torpedoes fired by the mogami I was fighting, and sunk. I wound up with 3 kills, 110k damage from my primaries, 40k damage from my secondaries, and 1900 xp in a loss, and it was fun as gently caress. After I die i notice there was actually an omaha still alive on my team, with full health, cruising in circles on the far side of the map. He wound up getting like 60 xp for the match and we probably would have won if he had been supporting me at all. But still, running a gauntlet like that, with all guns blazing and bombers circling and torpedoes everywhere is some loving cool poo poo.

The amount of people in games today loving the new ocean map is too damned high. I was like the only person against it, and I had a flood of people say poo poo like ... Adapt, learn to play on open water, etc. The. I spent the next 15 minutes smashing destroyers that couldn't close the gap in my myogi.

It's a shame WW2 boats isn't that sweet spot of technology and dueling like tanks and planes are. Massive battleships that plug in numbers in computers and fire away towards a target they can barely see is pretty boring. There's nothing exciting and personal about it. I think the period for quick exciting engagements like that that would end at the 18th century with ships broadsiding each other.

(this is legitimately a good thing) One thing I just realized is probably my biggest gripe is that the game rarely has an endgame because capping of some sort happens or it's a really weird draw setup. The endgame is pretty cool when you're trying to figure out how to do something that isn't optimal and trying to pull it out, but it happens so infrequently.

There were plenty of close range cruiser and destroyer knife-fights in the Pacific, particularly in the Solomons. For battleships to be engaged in surface combat was actually extremely rare, they spent most of the war as AAA escorts or on shore bombardment duties.

I wish they'd uncompress everything again, at the very least. Long shell times or not, seeing Destroyers cut through the water at 200 km/hr is really strange to watch. What has been seen cannot be unseen, etc. Even if they didn't go back to that view, the extended flight time and maneuver time and everything else would at least be more reasonable than the 3x speed version we've got right now.
