I tried Scribd and holy poo poo is it annoying to get the comics to load. 90% of the time you are stuck on a loading screen, then the app crashes, then it loads up and works for a bit, then it crashes again, then the next time it loads AND works like a charm. I'm using an android tablet (samsung 10.1) and with a wifi connection it still, on average, probably takes 5-10 mins to get the app functioning enough to download comics. Also there is not a lot of stuff on there. There's complete runs of Valiant (which is awesome) but no singular issues of comics like Spiderman or anything. Just trades and small runs of series stuff. I'm thinking of going with Marvel Unlimited if someone can verify they have single issues for a lot of old poo poo, and that the app isn't pants on head retarded like this Scribd one is.

The Marvel Unlimited Android app is perfectly usable. It's not perfect, however. It still crashes occasionally and has some bugs but it'll get you your comics.

Tangentially related, but the Marvel Unlimited in-browser experience seems to have improved a lot recently. Issues open in new a new tab/window instead of floatin' atop the page itself, and issues have been loading on the first try for the last couple days as well. The app is great on iOS at the moment, or at least vastly improved, but I can't speak to Android's quality. I can actually recommend it. Depending on what series you're looking to read, old stuff may be comprehensive as hell or incredibly patchy. They've got all of Uncanny X-Men up, but New Mutants is hit or miss. Alpha Flight is mostly missing, but you can read basically any issue of Avengers you could imagine. If there's a certain series you're really jonesing for, I would search the Marvel site to see if the issues are available or not before sinking the money for a sub.

Stupid_Sexy_Flander posted:I tried Scribd and holy poo poo is it annoying to get the comics to load. I don't have AS many problems with the Scribd app as you (using an Archos g9), but if you're getting it primarily for Marvel stuff, then Unlimited is a much better move. Scribd's selection seems split between publishers that see it as a means to get readers caught up so they'll start buying the current stuff (IDW, Top Cow, Boom, Valiant) and ones that see it as a means to provide a sample platter (Marvel, Dynamite). I'm in it mostly for the IDW licensed titles and Boom stuff, as well as some Top Shelf (so technicall more IDW) so it works for me well enough that I can deal. But if you're wanting the last 40 years of the X-Men, it's going to disappoint in every respect.

I was leaning more towards complete runs of the various spiderman titles, or at least by complete runs I mean ISSUES 500-600 or something like that. Basically just not trade paperbacks the way the scribd app does. Man I wish DC had something like this, I'd be all over it.

If it's the unlimited app you're having trouble with, I've found that once I read page 7 I can exit and reload the comic, and it'll preload the rest of the pages. Usually.

I see there's a Grimm Fairy Tales sale. Is Grimm just T&A: The Comic? Or is there more to it than that?
|
# ? Mar 30, 2015 15:33 |

It's all bad T&A, there isn't anything redeeming there.

One day someone will make a good T&A comic and redeem the genre. You just wait.

Welp, took the plunge on Marvel Unlimited. Read a few issues of various books, and other than the "retry screen on page 4" error people seem to get, it's about 10000% better than scribd's "Hold on, we are gonna load this... eventually. Go make a sandwich or something" way of handling comics. Also, if you are signing up from the app seriously just click the "create account" button once. I got 32 emails to confirm my account because the page would not give me any indication it was doing anything. That was kinda hosed up.

I didn't know Lapham wrote Crossed. I recently read Stray Bullets and loved/am loving it, so it's a bummer that his take on a decently intriguing premise was botched. FWIW, I quite like a lot of Ennis, but I recall thinking that the first few issues of Crossed felt pointless and over-the-top gross, so I dropped it. A lot of people seem to say the first 10 are worth reading, though.

David Lapham was doing a lot of work solely for the paycheck in the ten years or so that Stray Bullets was on hiatus, and has admitted as much. between his Avatar stuff and his Punisher Max oneshot, he got on this weird tasteless goreporn/splatterpunk kick for a while, maybe because he realized that Avatar will buy up anything with lots of hideous violence. none of it was any good. that being said, yeah, i think there's good writing under all the gruesomeness in the first Crossed mini. it's basically Ennis trying to out-bleak The Road. but i don't blame anyone for not being into it. Stray Bullets is one of the greatest comics of all time. the most recent issue was outstanding.

bobkatt013 posted:Get the Daredevil bundle! It is one of the best runs. Yeah. I'd already bought most of them in an earlier sale, so can't go bundle, but I would if I could--the run was great. My favorite Bendis other than Ultimate Spider-Man, I think. Note: issues 38-40 are new to Comixology for some reason, so if you bought the run on Comixology before, you probably don't have those issues yet. And issues 16-19 (not part of main run, which starts at 26) were not in the earlier sale that I was aware of. (So I picked both of those parts up--I think I've heard 16-19 are still worthwhile.) edit VVV thanks! onefish fucked around with this message at 15:29 on Apr 7, 2015 |

I have pretty low patience with Bendis--don't even really like Powers, which a lot of people do--but he just clicked with this run. You picked up a real epic for, I'm pretty sure, the best price possible (other than reading it from the library or buying used trades or something). edit: also, awesome art, which is important! Now, what *I'm* wondering is whether I'll like End of Days. The majority of people seem to say "Yeah, it's good," but I think there are some dissenters, and people weren't always sold on it issue-to-issue when it was being published, if I recall. onefish fucked around with this message at 21:33 on Apr 7, 2015 |

I read Bendis Daredevil and I guess I am the only one that was just okay with it? I mean it isn't bad, don't get me wrong, but its not something I would ever care to read again. Its just passable. I also feel the exact same way about Whedon's X-,men, so I dunno.
