What do I do when cops are on both shoulders of a two lane road and there is a law in my state saying you have to pull into a lane 1 over from stopped emergency vehicles? I'm asking because this happened and I just stayed in my lane but they could've given me a ticket if they cared? Am I supposed to come to a complete stop on a 65mph road?

Based on what the officer himself is describing he has no excuse whatsoever for shooting this guy. They should change "hands up, don't shoot" to "running away, don't shoot." You only need to stop if they're outright telling you to stop. Disclaimer: not a cop, just dealt with that situation a bunch with winter wrecks around here.

Most move over laws include a section which says something like "if unable to change lanes drivers must slow down and pass with care". Some states are very specific about the slowing down part. You'll get a ticket and convicted in a lot of places even if you can't merge over because of your speed.

Question not related to the shooting or guns at all - Is it common in your departments for police to 'dip into' illicit goods confiscated from criminals? It shows up a lot on TV, and obviously it happens since I've seen articles about officers fired because of it, but I'm wondering if its anywhere near as common (in at least some major jurisdictions) as media tends to imply. Beyond that, is drug use in general common among police officers? It seems like many of the stress factors of the job would make that likely.

You can pretty much forget about getting into the evidence room and getting any; it's counted at least 3 times a day by different people. At my old department there is at least one guy I'm confident would have failed a piss test, but I doubt he'd take it from evidence. Weed is just too easy to get other ways without risking getting caught stealing it from evidence.

As long as you take it before it gets logged and entered into evidence it shouldn't be a problem. I easily clear a few extra grand a month this way.

The article describes that the officer went bag and got something and then tossed it by the body. Pretty likely it was the TASER and that fact will be conclusive that he knew he did wrong by shooting the guy. Maybe the guy had the TASER and dropped it after firing it, but moving it that way makes him look even guiltier than he already looks from the shooting alone.

Now the dude they shot wasn't a kid by any means, but he straight up iced a motherfucker. The cell video I saw was a bit late to the start of the action, but it looks like something drops behind the officer as the guy starts running away. I'm just grateful the cameraman had the god damned decency to rotate is phone to landscape so the video looks worth a gently caress.

The only time I hear about it is when someone gets caught, which is occasionally. My Father finished his career working in anti- corruption and he said they used to run honeypot traps all the time using smartwatered goods and money that officers would fail.

Yeah we're allowed up to a pound of weed per month but you have to sign the "Stolen Weed From Evidence Room Log". Coke is for personal use only. It's encouraged as long as the Sgt can't see your hands shaking.

Random drug testing, pop hit you get fired. If you're caught drinking / drunk on the job you take a 30 day unpaid suspension and are then subject to snap breathalyzer tests on and off duty at random times, subject to firing if you blow a BAC over 0.

depends. Fleeing usually only earns you some stick time. Race obviously is a factor in determining length of sticking or if bullets are necessary.

No real opinion. We're not allowed to speak with them. Forward to a supervisor or the PO. Although the reporters around here are always getting poo poo wrong, especially when it comes to police and public safety stories. So I can see where some of the discontent comes from. Although I did work for a newspaper for a while, so that might be one of the reasons I don't seem to openly hate them like some of my colleagues do.
