Don't confuse "modern Democratic Party of the United States" with "the left" For a brief overview I'd say go read Zinn or any coverage of the Civil Rights movement that doesn't completely whitewash it. Mostly because I have evangelical family members, and many were Democrats by virtue of Republicans being rather bigoted, but Israel trumps all that.
