Last episode gave us the exact reason why Shirou uses Archer's weapons and fighting style.

Also, if I remember right, while Archer's Swords aren't particularly amazing as weapons, they imbue the wielder with defensive skills which would make them better for a relative novice like Shirou going against a seasoned warrior then say, a really powerful weapon that he has no idea to use, in a fighting style not as well suited to him.

Yeah, here it is. Looked it up on the LP.

Kinda don't get that kind of thing in the Anime, so it's not explicitly stated.

There's also the fact that Shirou has not seen Saber's sword at any point in the story so far, and the only way he knows what her sword looks like in Fate is that he dreams about it.

That's true, but I wonder if he got a very good look at it, encased in light and all. I forget, does Shirou ever make a distinction between Caliburn and Excalibur in Fate?

Yes, Caliburn is the sword he traced to kill Berserker, it's also the sword he saw in his dream.

He could trace Excalibur but then it would kill him cause of the immense amounts of mana needed to maintain and use it. This is actually stated in the visual novel later in Unlimited Blade Works.

I noticed the connections more with this episode too. Actually, it might be the opening. The twin swords in the last scene seems like good evidence. I don't know how the hell that would work though. It would imply that Shirou becomes a heroic spirit in the future and that the servants pool isn't just a collection of spirits from the past. But then how did Rin get his catalyst?

nevermind

Well, mostly I was confused as to how someone could reach one stage of speculation with making the logical conclusion to it, but okay, I'll edit it out if you like.

The only meaningful choice is "Have I died this way yet".

Fate/Stay Night is the story of all the ways a Shirou can die.

I refuse to believe that's all of them.

But yeah all the details about the weapons and the status screens in the game is just flavor fluff. It usually ends up being kind of fun because there's a historical analogue to it, but obviously these swords are kind of different than the flavor behind a Nasuverse Gae Bolg, Excalibur, or Kaladbolg II.

Archer's swords are also based on (Chinese) legendary swords. Not as famous as Excalibur or Gae Bolg (thus reflected in their rank) but legendary nonetheless.

Also, some people just plain don't like it

I always get a chuckle out of the observation someone made that whenever Shirou does something stupid on screen, there's an alternate timeline Shirou that did the smart thing and died for it.

To be fair, though, the inverse is also true. In UBW in particular you're given a lot of occasions to do something sucidally stupid, and actually die because of it.

The basic gist is that Fate/zero is seinen and UBW is shonen, and they're similar enough in spite of that that it throws people off.

Fate/zero is convoluted. It's not just an action show, it's a mind-battle show like Death Note or Kaiji with 7 people thrown in the clusterfuck instead of 2 or 3. A lot of the fun of Zero is watching the crazy plans everyone makes and seeing which ones pan out and which ones blow up in their face. UBW, on the other hand, is pretty much just a straight shonen action show, and a lot of people miss the involved mind games.
