A police officer attempted to stop corruption in the 60s NYPD narcotics unit. He was put on point on a high danger raid, as soon as the door was busted down all the other cops left him to be shot.

There was a good piece about it on NPR a few years ago. He would have been committed for life, but he had little sound recorders all around his house set up in case the police tried to get him. When they (the police) came they found one of them, but not the others. The guy's father found them after the fact and used them as evidence to get him out of the mental hospital (or wherever it was) he was put in. The guy now stays with his dad, but doesn't really leave the house, as the police constantly harass him when he goes outside and when he stays in. This is a different police force than the one he worked for harassing him by the way.

Adrian was lucky his dad used to be a cop and had the connections to find out where he Adrian had been involuntary committed to, otherwise he might have been gone for good.

If you have not listened to the This American Life podcast about this you should do it. The recording of when Adrian's superior pays him a visit at home is absolutely chilling.

I don't see this as a bad thing. I remember such a law was proposed in California when I lived there back in the 90s and prominent Hispanic leaders were against it because white cops always seem to think 20-something Hispanic men are teenagers. They saw it as giving cops another way to harass Latinos since an outsized proportion of them perform manual labor and get to work via pickup beds.

We haven't heard much from him lately, but it looks like federal indictments from Bridgegate could come next week:

quote:

Indictments in the federal investigation of the George Washington Bridge closures appear to be coming as early as next week, The New York Times reported on Wednesday.

The scandal has ensnared potential presidential contender and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) along with members of his administration, but the Times report stopped short of saying whether the criminal case was expected to reach the governor:

People close to the case say prosecutors are likely to bring charges based on a rarely used provision of a fraud statute, under which they would argue that Mr. Christie’s associates used the bridge, or the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs it, for a purpose other than its intended one. In the case of the bridge, the closings were apparently meant to punish Mayor Mark Sokolich of Fort Lee, a Democrat, after he declined to endorse the governor’s re-election bid in 2013.

The Times noted that since the scandal broke, Christie has pushed back his presidential ambitions further and further while waiting for U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman to make his move.

The indictments would be a long time coming in the so-called Bridgegate scandal, in which staffers close to Christie arranged to shut down lanes to the George Washington Bridge in September 2013.

Opponents of the governor say the move was politically motivated to disrupt traffic in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

Christie has maintained he knew nothing about the closures in advance and fired several aides close to the scandal.

Whether or not Christie himself is included, this might be the final nail in the coffin for his presidential ambitions.

At some point those kids will have to go home and the poverty is still at home. How would changing a school schedule affect that? It doesn't matter when kids go to school or for how long. They still have all the poo poo happening at home whether they're home in the morning to deal with it or home at night. You do realize the food kids are served at school are often the only reliable sources for meals kids living in poverty have? I worked in a high school where students would come to school long enough to get their free lunch courtesy of the USDA, then take off afterward and skip their afternoon classes.

The idea of extending hours to help kids stay out of trouble or alleviate a lack of parenting at home (before school, after school, and summer learning) is a long running idea kicking in academia and school administration, and there is a current federal program (21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC))) that is supposed to fund that. Here's an article about it being underfunded: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2013/07/15/the-secret-war-on-afterschool-programs/

And there seems to be some data showing some incremental gains in scoring and emotional wellness from some versions of this program: http://www.nber.org/chapters/c11725.pdf

Though this really well written article argues for more effective programs and attitudes for schools, rather than just more hours: http://www.ascd.org/publications/books/109074/chapters/How-Poverty-Affects-Behavior-and-Academic-Performance.aspx

It'll probably take a little while for him to actually be fired officially canceling their health insurance. As a mother without a job she'd be eligible for medicaid after the city's insurance expires so the state would still be covering everything.

Also my school kind of has a reputation for being a "thug" school (any Western PA goons would know since I'm talking about Gateway High School) and yeah I saw a couple of fights, including freshmen year when I saw a hulk cave a small guys face in for dating his ex. Hell I got in a fight... though that was more of a kidney punch the guy then lightly sock him in the face and then run to the hills, but still everyone liked me for it since the guy I fought was a douchebag.

What I'm try to say is, basically everything is hosed; my take, history books must be made as objective as possible with all the sugar coating wiped off, the Scarlet Letter should be banned from being taught because holy gently caress that book is awful and boring, and anyone who tries bringing up creationism/climate change denialism will be forced to read stacks of studies proving otherwise until they realize what a moron they are.

I don't remember Gateway being thought of as a Thug School (back in the 90s) but it was generally seen by people as a school where underachievers and/or those who weren't going to get in to a good college, or join the military, went. Your school fights are nothing. In the same year at my school one girl smashed a Snapple bottle on the face of another, and in a different fight a girl had a sizeable clump of hair ripped out of her head. This was at a middle class, mostly white district.

Calling it a raid implies it wasn't actually a setup to kill him, which it was. The cops with him knew what to expect which is why they made sure to leave as he tried to get in the door where someone with a gun just happened to be waiting to shoot him immediately. The cop that did respond later mentioned if they realized who they were helping they'd have let him die instead.

The NYPD is so corrupt that it's beyond believe and it's a shame the feds will never clean house there. The NYPD was even kind enough to show how loving terrible they were when they did their work stoppage poo poo recently and minorities in the city were commenting on how nice it was to not be accosted by (white) cops constantly for no reason.
