I think we can all agree this is the only good thing Paul Henry has ever done:

congrats bro you proved someone wrong on the internet

Paul Henry is terrible, John Campbell is a national treasure and he deserves to be on television even if his equally lovely wife is the only one watch.

Mediaworks bought Henry as a real competitor against One, which he wasn't as a late night host (and likely won't longterm as a breakfast host). Barely managing to buck the declining trend for a few months as a novelty vs the 20-year old Tonight in no way achieves that.

Source your numbers. What demographic are you looking at. What time period. Are you looking at entire programmes? Is this all weekdays or are you doing by day as well? poo poo dude you are just saying random poo poo now trying to hide the fact that you just said stuff without knowing what you're talking about. I'll be surprised if you can name the programme and the module of the programme where people source the ratings numbers.

Under no circumstances should someone with actual knowledge of how something works attempt to challenge a statement made in this thread.

It's still got more viewers than Paul Henry has ever pulled in any slot. The issue is that it's a serious news show situated after the news competing against a comedy infotainment show and New Zealand's Eastenders. It's not that it's not popular - it's not popular enough Paul Henry will do well but I doubt he'll do better given that 3 is going to stop catering to those ~200k people who want to watch more news just to steal some of Seven Sharp's viewer pool.

Hell all my replies have been 'you're wrong and here's why', which is called rebuttal. It's only obnoxious when you know it's right and it doesn't suit preconceived ideas.

I was wrong about the PHS show being consistently outperformed by Tonight, and thought that the increasingly desperate and softcore pornographic advertising at the end of last year was indicative of a decline in viewership. I'm sorry I mentioned ratings at all in an offhand list of Paul Henry's failures, I should have said something about losing to a Maori transwoman in the Wairarapa electorate instead.

Eating Media Lunch was a current affairs show, pretty much. and it was amazing. It was the best when he managed to convince Angela Dewhassherface to go to press conferences and use her BBC anchor cred to get to the front and then ask questions as "Angela: Eating Media Lunch". They should revive it and bring back Unauthorised History of NZ.

If people are getting all angsty about current affairs reporting in the 7pm timeslot, I'd rather see something like Media Take on a major network. Or even something like Sky New's Contrarians. People seem to be more concerned about retaining Campbell Live's activist journalist theme than substantive current affairs reporting. Not that there's anything wrong with that, there's just no real point in pretending it's something else.

Hey New Zealand goons. whats the deal with Matthew Dalzell. Wasn't he the guy who was all hard-core about Chinese conglomerates swooping in and buying up the NZ dairy + giving passports away to Chinese ex-pats who want to "donate" more than 3 million NZD and start new development projects: like Golf Courses near Julian Robertson's shack?

You would think the guy who made the framework for New Zealands economic 'recovery' since 2009-2014 leaving to go teach China how to build an IMF competitor would be a really big deal. Borderline treason. Any thoughts ?

That's not really surprising, most public services are fairly autonomous. I know MFAT loved having Winston as foreign minister because he didn't meddle much, and was mostly in it so he could drink whiskey with international VIPs.

Lord knows education would be better off without Hekia Parata, and Joyce is a famous(ly annoying) micromanager so ministry of everything would probably like to see him gone too.

It's a company that's run for profit. You'll find that with any TV network that generates most of its income from advertising, ratings are key. On the bright side, this situation/discussion could give a boost to what I presume is the dormant campaign to have some sort of non-commercial public TV broadcaster in NZ like the BBC or the ABC. Does anyone know if countries of similar population to NZ have public NFP broadcasters and what sort of funding they receive? Would there be any lasting support for this sort of thing?

Todd Barclay is a naive weirdo imo, and I think we can all agree on that.

Just because your primary goal is to make money, doesn't mean that it should be your only goal. In fact, having a single focus makes you, well, anti social. I don't mean "bad at relating to others" - I mean "anti society". If someone says something abhorrent, pointing out that its natural for that person to say that abhorrent thing does not excuse the person.
