The voice work in this game is pretty good aside from the reusing of clips. Some of those get annoying but that's sort of par for the course for the game.

Doesn't know the impossible.

By the way, regarding sandbag defense: IIRC, it's not that you need to attack from the rear of the sandbags. The position of the sandbags is actually completely irrelevant, aside from determining how many bullets are valiantly ablated by them.

As you can see from the "Frt" in the aim box, and from the lancer turning to face you, he is aware of your attack, and is thus able to summon psychic power from the friendly sandbag fairies to resist your bullets. If you instead get a rear shot (possibly side shots as well? can't remember), he is unable to summon this power in time and gets no defense from the sandbags.

This ends up mostly only being relevant with map transitions - depending on the map layout, you or the enemy can capture one side of the base and then spawn into the other behind their backs for some free kills. But it can be amusing to spray wildly at a base halfway across the map in the hope of randomly capping one of the defenders in the back of the head.

Raymond just got a box from home with a ton of fruits and veggies in it! He says he made a feast out of it all. Want in?

Do I?! Man, I'm there!

*time passes*

Raymond is frantically pacing back and forth to give the notion that he's cooking and serving food repeatedly. He's doing this in between lines.

Mmm, this green bean soup is killer. Raymond, you're a culinary genius!

The fries are crispy, and this pickled cabbage has just the right kick to it!

Wow, and this apple pancake is amaaazing! Amaaaaaazing! Seconds, please!

Uhh, Noel? Don't you think you've had enough? Like... are you even okay?

What? I'm totally fine! I could throw down another fifty of those pancakes!

Wow.

N-Noel, you're a really big eater, huh? I-I'm pretty surprised.

Rgh, well I'm not gonna lose to a girl! Seconds, please!

I-I don't think this is a competition...

All right, who's next? I'll aim a little higher. Who wants a nose job?

R-Run! He's gonna kill us aaaall! *runs away*

Waste of my drat time... If they couldn't fight, they shoulda stayed home.

What were you doing out here, Erik?!

Ugh, Hardins. It's you. What do you think we were doing, genius?

Those guys were from other classes, weren't they? Why were you fighting them?

Aw, can the lecture, yeah? It's none of your drat business, that's why.

It is my business! You're part of my team, man!

Your team? Who cares? Just because we're in the same class--

I do. You've got to look out for the guys who watch your back in combat.

Great speech, Mr. Chair. But forget the sentimental hoopla, would ya?

I hate all that stupid buddy-buddy drivel, and stuff your team spirit! Hearing people preach about it just makes me want to break things.

GET BENT!!!

Hey, I wasn't done talk--

Shut up already! I don't have a drat thing to talk about with you! *leaves*

...And a fine afternoon to you, too. Erik. Ugh, what has him all prickly?

Mm? Oh, hey, Lotte. What's this about a wolf?

Dude, you don't know?! Erik Kampmann!

He's a regular boseyman in the stories they tell. He's a notorious bully!

He got that name 'cause he sinks his fangs in anyone and everyone he crosses.

Yeah, I can see that.

In any case, he's one bad dude, dude. Sent a load of our guys to the hospital. That, and a total lack of cooperation has the class at a loss.

Hmm, I see. There has to be a reason why he lashes out, though, right?

I'll try to talk to him about it next time.

I can't tell what's worse: Erik's attitude or Lotte's super SoCal accent, dude

Anyways, gonna visit and explain some stuff available for vehicle parts.

Mortar Turrets are basically dedicated grenade launchers. Not exactly great since regular tank turrets have mortar anyway.

Flamethrowers are arguably one of the best weapons in the game. They do a ton of infantry damage, eh against vehicles, but basically destroy bunkers (way later on that) in one hit. Their firing pattern is firing a left-to-right wave of flames at a target, and this is useful against things in cover. Okay, not that great since vehicles can just negate cover anyway but it's the thought that counts.

Pure turrets have their own uses. The gun turret on the 3 style ones tanks default to have a lovely anti-infantry turret. This one is basically a super Shocktrooper gun, and the main reason is two-fold: 1) Kill infantry really hard and 2) defend bases. Gatling turrets are the only type of weapons that can track and counterattack, the one weakness Flamethrowers have over Gatling.

We only have 1 shoulder part available to buy, and it's the lamp. Waste of money honestly, since being able to see enemies sooner isn't that big a deal, and more importantly it takes up weight slots which are super important. 1 extra weight is the difference between a tank forced to use a T-MAG and using the 3-ammo turrets.

Constructer Arm is one of the most important backpacks in the game, allowing the ability to make bridges over the yellow Wrench mark on maps, creating most likely a huge shortcut. It costs 2 weight though, so make sure the map you're on has a bridge to be made.

Reduce night accuracy is really meh, there's too many ways to manipulate your survival with smart traveling.

I will, however pick up side defense since the APC almost got trashed last mission by a bunch of footsoliders. Increase its survival even just a little.

Are you prepared?

You know it! We're all set to go.

Even as your adviser, I can't honestly rate Class G as anything but sub-par. I hope you'll at least avoid any casualties out there.

Hey, don't write us off just yet! I'm telling you now, we're winning this.

Then I'll have the pleasure of watching you perform a miracle. I look forward to seeing that happen. Now go to the drill ground.

*Class G moves to the drill ground*

It's doubtful. We're marching off to object humiliation.

Don't get all negative on me! We took out a tank, didn't we? What's a handful of guys compared to that? Right? It's foolproof!

They REMEMBERED killing rebels and are STILL more worried about a scrimmage match than...goddamnit, why is Avan making the most sense?

To think a person like you is even distantly related to Leon Hardins is just...

Just what? And how would you even know Leon?!

Leon Hardins was one of the most gifted students this academy has known. He was also a commander of impressive skill. And I am not one to flatter.

So even the princess looked up to him!

I respected him as a peer. I'm confident my own skill is superior, however.

I think she doesn't like Avan

Sir!

Yo!

All right, maggots! Listen up! For the Cup, we run a real combat simulation. Gallian Army rules. You'll be firing practice rounds, but they can still kill if you're not lucky. Make your peace, then hit the field!

I still can't believe we got Class G. It's like a win by default!

Yeah, just keep talking. We'll see who's smiling in a few minutes here.

Uh, make that a few days Avan. It's gonna be a while.

Meet Class G: Erik Kampmann

Personal Potentials:
Camp Defender - Bent on protecting camps by sheer force of will, raising evasive skills.
Scout Killer - Confidence that they can best any scout raises firing accuracy and attack power against infantry targets.
Outcast - Having allies of the same unit class nearby puts them on edge, lowering evasive skill.

Simple summary: Erik is your best bro to protect your camp. Camp Defender makes him a sturdy evader, Outcast is a non-factor since you don't want to group up on a base anyway, and Scouts are the #1 camp takers. Probably the only guy to get constantly deployed over than Avan.

Huh? What do you mean? And what did he do? Why shouldn't Helmut read it?

Don't you know anything? You need to stay awake for class more! Every time the Empire's loss comes up in class, he makes Helmut read. So he's from the Empire! Big deal! That's no reason to rub it in his face.

Wait, what? Helmut's an imperial?!

Shhhh. dummy! Keep your voice down!

He came here just after the peace accord was drawn up, apparently. Long story short, he's insurance.

What, like a hostage? What do you mean?

To the empire, this treaty just pushes their agenda back a little while. So it's only natural we'd want some leverage to keep the peace going, right? Well, that's Helmut.

What, just one exchange student? How does that stop two countries from fighting?

It wouldn't. if he were just an exchange student. Word is, his family has direct ties to the imperial bloodline. He's the perfect choice for a hostage.

Huh. And everybody knows about this arrangement?

Probably. I heard some people talking about it a little while ago. I wonder if that's why the whole class seems to treat him a little coldly.

Ahh...okay.

Avan, shhh! You're going to get us in trouble!

You, in the back! Care to share the pressing matter you've been discussing?

Gah! S-Sorry, Professor!

Not...a super cliche? I'm so confused.

Mm? Oh, the latest word from Amatriain, good.

Amatriain? Why's that sound familiar?

Amatriain is the seat of the Gallian military! You know there's the Army for defending the nation, right? And the militia's drafted from civilians in the event of an invasion.

Right. Leon was in the militia a few years back.

The facility that houses the soldiers from both those forces is Amatriain.

Whoa, sounds pretty big! Is that where you were before coming here?

Yeah, I headed up the training program. One of the soldiers I had there went pro on me. I left the place to her. Jane's tougher than I am. I feel sorry for the poor guys at Amatriain.

Rod's reference is about Jane Turner, a Shocktrooper from Welkin's Squad 7.

She was a florist when the empire destroyed her shop, so she started killing imperials a lot and got a taste of blood, acquiring the nickname "Sadistic Jane" by her students later on.

Meet Class G: Helmut Bourdais

Personal Potential:
Lancer Killer - Confidence that they can best any lancer raises firing accuracy and attack power against infantry.
Rear Guard - Being the very last to take action raises attack power against infantry targets.
Darcsen Hater - Becomes uncomfortable when a Darcsen is nearby, lowering defense.

Helmut is what you call a tanky Scout. He has by far the highest HP of the class outside of Avan, and his shoot is the lowest but still higher than most others. His potentials are also one of the more reflective of his personality, in Darcsen Hater. Lancer Killer is okay but nothing to specialize for a situation.

Rear Guard is an oddball, because he's effectively a Scout for preparation of next turn but he's the best 1st Scout because of his high HP.

He'd make an interesting main character. Use him so that you need someone to explain Gallia to him (because he's an Imperial) and to get a different perspective on the war. Plenty of room for character development as he sees first hand the destruction his Empire wrought on Not-Switzerland and deals with hazing and suspicion.

It would beat Hungry Dumbass Goodheart.

I mean, from what I've seen of VC1, Welkin at least makes sense as a militia officer. Son of someone important, university educated, reasonably bright? That's pretty much who tends to get put in command of backwater reserve units.

Midnight suppression is an enemy base capture mission, with a 3 turn A rank limit. This map introduces Snipers, which are probably the most threatening since they can potentially one-shot your units while not falling into a counterattack death trap.

The enemy ace Cindy is around map 1, which gives the blueprint for a slightly better scout rifle.

Wow, you train over your lunch break?

Sure. I'm in no shape to beat the rebels just yet.

You look pretty ripped to me. Were you scouted for those muscles?

No, I applied here. My town was rich in ragnite ore. Every time a war broke out, it'd be among the first spots to get hit.

This time around, it cost me one of my best friends. I want to keep my home and my family safe from war. That's why I'm here.

Sorry about your friend. I can relate to worrying about your home, though.

Oh, I'm not too worried. My closest friend stayed to hold down the fort. We swore to each other we'd fight for peace in Gallia, for our town.

Nice. What's your friend like?

His name's Sigrid. He's smart, unlike me. Real good on his feet. Knowing he's keeping our home safe lets me fight with a clear head here. Which means I've got no excuse not to work as hard as I can! My job now is to beat the rebels and win back peace for everybody.

You're really into it, huh? Don't get me wrong. I like that in a guy!

It's a textbook case of big sister laying down the law on little bro.

Oh, that's right. I forgot they were related.

At this rate, you'll never be of any use to anyone! You should be ashamed!

Yes, ma'am...

I guess being siblings makes it that much harder to let things slide.

I can remember times I got an earful from Leon. I'd be bummed for days...*walks over to the siblings*

I know you're only on his case because you care about him, but still...

Um...

I can remember the days when my brother'd chew me out all the time. It was rough, but thinking back on it, he just wanted me to be the best I could. He was extra harsh on purpose to try to goad me iinto trying harder at--

I'm simply calling a spade a spade. When I say Nichol is useless, I mean it.

Hey! Now that's just mean!

Were you quite done talking? I have a class to prepare for. Good day. Come along, Nichol. Don't dawdle!

Yes, Franca...

*Both siblings leave*

What's her deal? How can she say that about her own brother?

I don't think Nichol's useless in combat, either. I wonder if she just doesn't like him.

But they're brother and sister! I don't set siblings who don't get along, man.

Well, that's just great. Reiner and Helmut, I hate you for getting my hopes up.

Anyways, I leveled up classes a bit and learned a couple more Orders. The most interesting one is Demolish Boost, which increases anti-vehicle power and lets Scouts blue-spot kill tanks. Obviously far more useful in VC1 when maps were huge and it cost 3 CP, instead of 4 and maps are small enough that it's way worth it to just move a Lancers that many times.

This is the weirdest mission because most of the tutorial bits is about co-op play, because Valkyria Chronicles was on the PSP and Japan loves co-op.

Basically, you can set it up so a single CP will have like 4 attacks or something and get buffs based on the class. Completely useless for this LP, but just a function that VC2 decided to take advantage of, I guess.

Otherwise, just a standard 3 turn A rank mission to capture an enemy base.

Oh, and Lavinia blew up because she ran over a mine. Whoops.

Got a medal, which are useless for the most part other than getting some easter egg characters at 20 and 27 respectively. A lot are story based or condition based, this one I got for letting a person die and not rescue them so...good job, me?

Lavinia got us a discount for...some reason. I guess we beat enough missions?

Since our APC blew up, we can either wait a couple missions for it to be usable again...or just pay a small fee to repair it and have it ready again. You've seen all those missions available. We're going to have enough money at all times.

Oh no, at the gate?! Are we under attack?!

Oh

I guess I can understand. It's hard to get out of bed when it's cold. I tried to fix that once by sleeping all bundled up in coats. I got so hot I woke up in the middle of the night.

Come morning, I was warm enough, but too sleepy to get up...

Winter mornings are great for extra drills. The cold helps me concentrate. Once I got so into my workout, I slipped on the ice and cracked a rib.

Needless to say, I was late to class that day.

I'll sometimes stand next to the furnace and space out after waking up...

My hair caught fire once. ...I was late that day.

Meet Class G: Reiner Tristan

Child of Nature - Paved areas feel strange and cold, leading to discomfort and lowering defense.
Camaraderie - Likes overcoming challenges with allies, raising evasive skills.
Tank Killer - Never fought a tank that can't be taken down. Raises attack power against armored targets.

Reiner has the worst accuracy by far out of his class, but who cares, he's there to kill tanks. The first two skills are okay, since Lancers should be treated as hit and run units and rarely left active during enemy turns. However, Tank Killer puts him over the other Lancers as the ultimate vehicle killer. One of the few that can afford to shoot down tanks from the side efficiently.

Franca Martin

Neat Freak - Worries about dirt stains lead to distraction, lowering firing accuracy.
Born Leader - Having allies nearby sparks a sense of responsibility, raising defense.
Nichol Hater - Becomes uncomfortable when Nichol is nearby, lowering attack power against infantry targets.

Franca is statistically the weakest among female Shocktroopers, having the lowest HP and Shoot (Although still more accurate than Zeri and Erik). Born Leader gives her a nice defensive boost, but absolutely don't have her next to Nichol.

There's a couple others that give general attack boosts, but Reiner's the only one for the entire game that has anti-tank.

(Also, the tank girl's name is Lavinia? Then what's that girl from other class, the stuck up one, named? I can't keep track of characters that are introduced all together like this...)

Julianna, aka 90% of her sketch artbook notes are either dirty jokes about her body or straight up questioning the philosophy on how big her breasts should be.

They can't seem to make up their mind whether it's the oldest academy or the only one (in which case, what point is there in technically correct labelling as oldest? Unless they mean there wasn't an older one that got closed or something).

Man we are really hitting every loving cliche.

Huh the Darksen cloth tidbit is interesting. Does that ever get expanded on in-game? I'd think that's the first thing the racists would trash.

As seen in the 'Winter is the least of our problems' skit he's too into his training and pushing himself too hard which is ironically holding him back. He's definitely the 'least misfit' of the class along with Helmut though.
