Nothing will match Kingdom hearts nonsense, because on a pure story level you have to play the whole saga across like 5 different consoles, and all but 1 is totally canon.

I was going to just copy my own poo poo post that I made about Dissidia's story, but I figure I'll actually just effort post what it is instead of being a joker.

So, basically, Cid from FF1 (remastered, I do not believe Cid existed in the original FF), was a scientist from the advanced civilization of Lufenia. Somehow, it doesn't matter how, he got a job as the head scientist of another nation's government, who were at war with somebody else. He also had a wife, another researcher from Lufenia. Their jobs were to make weapons for the government, which sucked because it was literally technology against magic and summons and the summons and magic were totally kicking their rear end. Until one day Cid found Chaos, who may or may not have been Garland then. Chaos was a natural superweapon of unrivaled power and had an obsession over his adopted mother, Cid's wife. This allowed them to control Chaos and do the government's bidding.

So Chaos destroyed all the enemy nations' summons and their whole country and everything worked out fine, but then somebody still managed to kill Cid's wife. This hosed everything up. Chaos went crazy and started destroying everything in sight, and Cid was also pissed at the world and let him do this. Somehow, though, the dragon god Shinryu from FF5, who can cruise the Interdimensional Void that Gilgamesh and apparently Omega Weapon (who was built to destroy Shinryu), both from FF5, use, came along and made a deal with Cid and Chaos. He would make Cid immortal and Chaos even more powerful using a complicated as hell ritual that basically involved pulling people from different worlds into one world, a mirror of the world of Final Fantasy 1, to fight to the death. The energy unleashed in the fights would empower both Chaos, Shinryu, and presumably Cid, and I think the goal was to either resurrect Cid's wife/Chaos' mom, or just to amass power for the sake of power.

The FF protagonists and antagonists were never meant to know about this, but how do you make them fight? Well, Chaos went to one side of the battleground and Cid and Shinryu made a clone of his dead wife and called her Cosmos, to lead the opposite side. Somewhere at the very beginning of this whole thing Chaos found a dying Garland from FF1 and basically enlisted him into this whole thing to make a time loop, to keep feeding Shinryu and Chaos power by continually perpetuating the cycle of warriors fighting each other. Remember that Garland of FF1 eventually becomes Chaos at the end and becomes the final boss. Same deal...sorta?

Cid tried to do a semi humane thing and make crystal copies of everybody so that the real versions didn't actually have to fight and die every cycle, but it didn't work out. I believe the only perfect crystal copies he made were of himself, who is the Warrior of Light of FF1, and Cosmos, who was of course his dead wife's clone. The other "manikins" were failures and dumped into the Interdimensional Void. So 12 cycles pass where the "gods", Chaos and Cosmos, would pit warriors against one another. Apparently the evil side won every single time, but that's of no consequence.

Until the 12th cycle happened, and the Emperor of FF2 stumbled across the abandoned manikins and realized he had an endless army at his disposal. The manikins were tied to the cycle and would endlessly come back to life, and if one of them killed their original, the original version was gone for good. They couldn't be brought back to life when the next cycle started. So the Emperor used these guys to checkmate the whole game and gently caress everything up. Along the way Sephiroth killed himself to further understand the nature of the cycles, and this allowed him to retain his memories of the previous cycles. I don't know why.

So an elite team of Lightning, Prishe, Yuna, Vaan, and Kain (FF13, FF11, FF10, FF12, FF4) sacrificed themselves to stop the endless manikin waves by sealing the part of the Interdimensional Rift they came from. Since they were supposed to die permanently, none of the other cast remember them when the 13th and final cycle starts up. Also in the 12th cycle Vaan breaks Terra free from Kefka's mind control and recruits her for Cosmos' side and Jecht gives his life to Tidus, who was on the evil side solely because gently caress YOU DAD, and in the 13th cycle is on Chaos' side and Tidus is on Cosmos' side, despite Jecht not being evil.

So in the 13th cycle Cosmos gets sick of all this bullshit and arranges to get herself killed by Chaos, who by this point has forgotten what the cycle was even supposed to do. Her death bestows her godly power upon her warriors which enable them to survive past the point where the cycle was supposed to restart. This also gives them a big enough power boost to enable them to finally win one and destroy Chaos, and ending the cycle and sending them all back to their respective home worlds.

tl;dr: It's exactly like Kingdom Hearts, where from a distance it's convoluted nonsense but when you actually play it you know that's it's still convoluted nonsense, but now you know what all the pieces are, even if your still unsure of how they fit together. There's time travel involved. That one random superboss from FF5 has waaaay more importance than anybody would guess.

WASP CREW
I think the capper to that whole pile of... events was that in the finale all of the FF characters get sucked back to their home dimension, except the Warrior of Light. He forgets everything that just happened, and keeps the magic crystal he acquired during the plot. Then he walks to the castle of Corneria in the distance while the Prologue plays, because I guess Dissidia is literally the canon prequel to Final Fantasy 1.

Eh, I don't hate Dissidia, but it's not my thing. Every time I see it though I keep thinking why Square, a company that was known for its RPG's didn't make well, an RPG with the premise of Dissidia. Ever since Tactics had come out and Cloud was in it and they brought up the idea of a weird machine transporting someone from a different dimension into another area, they had the perfect setup for a Final Fantasy Mash-up tactics game, but then they went and made a fighting type game. I'll keep dreaming I guess.

I wanted to like Dissidia but it always feels like someone was trying to port a game that originally used something like those twin sticks from Virtual-On to PSP with a control scheme that they couldn't quite get to fit then went 'eh, good enough'.

I am unironically glad they are continuing the Dissidia tradition of inappropriate butt rock.

Making the song based on the Dissidia theme was a wonderful idea, I'm pumped. God in Fire is a quite succinct telling of the basics of the plot, but I've little idea what the song's in the trailer lyrics are, maybe it's similar.

Also, since Ramza is there now, that probably means Delita will be in too.

Fixed that for you; Prishe was in there, but she fell into a plot hole at some point in an earlier cycle before the 12th one and never came back.

Nobody is involved in the games's stupid metaplot other than WoL, Garland, Cosmos and Chaos. And that's why it rocks because you play the entirety of the game with none of this nonsense being hinted at, at all (outside of "something, something. Cycles") and then you do the optional ultra hard bonus dungeon and they just dump everything else on you at once.

The Emperor and I think Ultimecia are sort of involved in the metaplot, in that they discovered the abandoned clones in the 12th cycle, and in the 13th cycle plot to steal Chaos' power and use it to reach their goals (time kompression for Ult, ruling over all of existence for the Emperor).

Also there are some cool texts in Duodecim that chronicles scenes from the different cycles and in one of them Kuja is playing double agent except Kefka (I think it was Kefka, it might have been Exdeath) totally knows about it and manipulates Kuja into murdering Zidane and two other Light Warriors and basically laughs at him when Kuja succumbs to despair. Kefka is the best, other than Chaos' voice actor completely hammin' it up everywhere.

Innuendo and sex jokes have always been common in Japanese games even back in the Famicom/NES era. Not having something like that is probably the exception rather than the rule when it comes to JRPGs.
