I decided that it's good enough and should stop nitpicking: http://www.mixcloud.com/alfaj0r/from-my-living-room-09/ I'd welcome some feedback, I took some risks in both song selection and transitions, and I'm not objective enough to tell if they're good, passable, or worse.

They don't respond or check to any of their social media pages. I'm considering just lying to soundcloud and saying I have permission at this point, since I've heard people have had luck doing that.

Banano posted:Or just put it on mixcloud? There can never be enough disco After nearly two weeks I finally have the licensing manager's contact information. I'll report back in like a month when she decides to reply to my email. I don't like mixcloud at all. I hate the player, the interface isn't exactly very good, and the userbase is tiny. I can honestly email the mix or even word-of-mouth it around for more exposure than I'd get. I have a mixcloud account but it's just a backup for mix hosting in case (read: when) soundcloud bites the bullet. I'm about to just remove the track from my mix and rework it with a new intro track that doesn't trip the filter. I usually edit the first tracks of my mix, but for this particular case, the landscape of the mix was perfect with the track as is, and I figured that since it's on soundcloud in several other non-official locations and has more copies on youtube than I can count that it would be fine.

I just pitched down the whole track from ~90 bpm to 70 bpm and only used parts of the song that don't have a lot of backing instrumentation, then layered over drums and various samples in Live. It's screwed & chopped, basically.

Don't mean to double post but what the heck how did my mix break 100 listens already, I have no name or marketing. I doubt 100 goons listened to this. Which brings me to ask, how do you guys get peoples' ears on your work? I did have at least ten friends check it out and posted it here and on Reddit but the last time I did that I maxed out around 35 listens.

Things that influence number of plays: 1) the genre (good luck getting a single person to listen to a progressive house or top40 mix) 2) the picture (if you have one) you created for use as artwork 3) what time of day you post it on social media (different websites have different peak-user times, and it moreso varies on reddit by time of day and sub. You can google some general trends on this as a lot of companies have done analytics on this) 4) the name of your mix (not a very big impact, but goes along with the genre/picture) 5) your DJ name 6) this is the most important one: if your mix is good, people will share it. virality/organic growth is the only way to really get a lot of plays (edit2) 7) the website you post it on (soundcloud>mixcloud>heartthis) I get about 250 plays per week on my soundcloud now, without doing anything. It goes up to 750-1500 when I release something new depending on the genre. This is not a braggable number by any measure, but it's exponentially greater than 1 or 2 years ago as I have grown my fanbase and they have been recommending to their friends, etc. That's really where plays come from, and that takes time and consistency. It's not easy. Don't stress or worry about how many listens you get, it's not always going to be a reflection of the mix itself. There's a little bit of randomness in there edit: I will say, there are other ways to look at it. I have some friends who have thousands of followers on soundcloud because he networks a lot, but he doesn't really ever get above 100 plays on his mixes (they are bad and he is a boring DJ). It's working for him though, because he gets booked at clubs and small festivals, likely largely in part because has 2 thousand followers. Just focus on what your goals are. I just want to mix music and put it out there for people to listen to, I am not too focused on getting gigs because this is just my hobby. mitztronic fucked around with this message at 20:02 on Apr 17, 2015 |

I tried to post a mix on Soundcloud earlier but it got deleted due to copyright problems. Is there a way to work around this? Is this the wrong thread to talk about this? Anyway I appreciate the words, and followed you on Soundcloud and Mixcloud. Yes and no. I posted a similar reply on reddit the other day: Soundcloud copyright flagging works in the following ways: 1) Manual flag (i.e. a person or bot) clicks the "report as copyright infringement" button 2) Automatic detection - this one is a little bit more complicated, and they have changed it up recently: When you upload a track, soundcloud compares the first 40 seconds of the track against their copyright database - this database only has tracks that have been specifically marked by labels or licensing companies. They have recently revamped their system to randomly check old postings against updates to the database. You may or will possibly hear about people getting 2 year old mixes down, this is why. As far as I know, they do not have the processing power or software capability to check entire mixes against their entire database. You will hear a lot of people tell you they do this, but I have seen no proof of this and if they were doing this there would be FAR less mixes on soundcloud now. So now that you know how the system works, how can we avoid it? You have a few options, I will just mention the popular methods and my favorites at the top: 1. Create a new soundcloud account and upload the first few minutes (or the whole thing if you have a high speed uplink and don't care). The reason we want to make a new account here is soundcloud will automatically and permanently disable your account if you get too many copyright flags. There have been countless artists who have lost their soundcloud page despite putting up only original music. This is another story and another problem with soundcloud. In any case, if your sound passes the copyright detector, you're golden to go ahead. 2. Edit in 40 seconds or so of something to the intro of your mix. This can be silence, perhaps, or something else. I haven't really done this, but I have heard it works. As a matter of course, a large majority of my mixes have custom edits or samples/remixes as the first track. I just haven't done it because of copyright. 3. Remove the first song and post-edit in a new first track. This isn't a good option and might be worth more trouble than you get. You can use any number of software DAWs to do this. So what happens if you get a copyright tag? It loving sucks: 1. Unless you can clear the tag, you can never, ever, use that URL again (i.e. soundcloud.com/jonmitz/groovematic-iv). This isn't really a big deal but if you're releasing a series of mixes its nice to stay consistent. 2. You can try to clear it up - maybe the ping was incorrect. I had an incorrect copyright flag on a mix of mine, and I simply responded to soundcloud saying that while that track used samples from the ping track, that track did so legally and with full rights, and that particular label didn't mind me using their track in a mix. 3. You can try to get licensing from the licensing managers for the label. - GOOD loving LUCK - *see my story below where I tried to do this recently It's really too bad. DJs were (and still are) huge content creators for the website. They have really bent themselves over backwards for labels, especially in the last year or so, going so far as to give them full access to every sound on soundcloud so they can do their own copyright scans, with full ability to take down anything they find. It's only going to get worse. *Here's my story: I finished the 4th mix in my groovematic series (groove/house/indie). Stupidly, I used a track from a label that happened to partner up with a huge licensing company (beggars group, UK). My track was immediately taken down. I was left with a couple options... i could either redo the mix and change the first track (which I really did not want to do, because it really sets the stage for the mix), or I could attempt to get a license. I went with the latter. I started with the artist. He was loving stoked that his track was getting used and he was all for it. He pointed me to his manager, who took a week or so to get back to me. The manager pointed me to the label, and it took me 2 more weeks to get in contact with someone there (they have no email listed online, and the email I was given was a dead link. I eventually got in contact with them thru facebook). The guy at the label points me to the licensing group. I email them and contact them via twitter as those are the only two avenues they have. 3 weeks later, I haven't heard anything and I've sent them 2 follow up emails. Finally I get a response from the licensing group that says "we don't normally deal with soundcloud so we don't know how to process your request" (the loving licensing company, which is all they do, do not know how to deal with soundcloud. WHAT) and that they are trying to "figure out" how to handle the request. After 2 months total time has passed, I get an email with an offer. It was $100 for a 6 month stream-only. Way outside my budget, all of the tracks in the mix are <$100 in total. I turned it down because I need to eat and would rather spend that on 70 new tracks. The mix is on mixcloud now, and I am getting requests weekly to put it on soundcloud from my friends and fans. I was expecting the plays on that mix to hit 1500+ based on the trend of my last 3, and it's sitting below 150 on mixcloud. I'm considering going back and post editing out the first track and putting in something different, but as I said, I really don't want to change it. tl;dr: Licensing companies are lovely. mitztronic fucked around with this message at 21:49 on Apr 17, 2015 |
