as a third party you dont eliminate another party politically, you take over an existing party by making them adopt your agenda by showing it gets voted in. thats why you focus on the local level first.

Yeah, take a state where the local political leadership of the minority party is a bunch of idiots, ignore them and campaign and win somehow. Now your policies are shown to be winners in a state the mainstream policy has trouble in, which means they'll probably want to adopt your policies in other hard-fought places.

I used to think the last chance any third party had to establish themselves nationally was Perot carrying the Reform Party banner in 1992 and 1996, but it was obvious in retrospect there was no institutional support (or any downballot) candidates for Reform, it was just a rich as gently caress Texan who wanted a party to run with, and "Reform" sounded good.

Most success third party candidates get statewide tend to be due to regional issues, or just plain weird circumstances (see: Alaskan Independence Party, or perennial Rhode Island candidate Bob Healey unexpectedly cracking 20% in the 2014 RI Governor's Race under the "Moderate" Party label, which, ironically, was a party started by Ken Block, the guy who ran for that year's Republican nomination and lost).

I'm curious, what was your read of the Chicago election? Or is there something else you are seeing that I've missed? Chuey going down was the source of my opinion that while the left part of the democratic coalition is growing, it still isn't delivering. Sure there is Warren, but Warren swept into the primary so that's not really anything for their strength, and once she was the candidate the party splits are rather inconsequential. The ability for movement progressives to push on primaries still seems lacking for now.

I think Rahm got embarrassed in the Chicago election. That city is as rigged as you can get for a finance-backed incumbent and he got pushed into a run-off and had to spend millions against an essentially unfunded opponent and still just barely squeaked into double digits. A similar thing happened to Cuomo in the NY Gubernatorial election and it will keep happening to Democrats who don't (or don't want to) understand that it's not the 90s any more. And some of those Democrats will lose.

I don't think Hillary is that stupid and her campaign is going to have to articulate an economic vision, which won't be to nationalize the banks, but also won't confine itself to deficit reduction and "entitlement reform". Equal pay and raising the minimum wage are already fully integrated into the party platform and Democrats can anticipate an expansion of those ideas. In 2008, Hillary was against lifting the payroll tax cap, in 2014 she said she's OK with lifting the cap above $200k. So, as I said, we'll see.

And then she'll get into office, appoint Larry Summers as Treasury Secretary and I'll have to start pumping whisky directly into my stomach :v:

Just a few hours before a scheduled annoucement, which many expect to be his presidential bid, Business Insider uncovered the issue pages on Rubio's website. While the website currently only shows a teaser for tonight's announcement, a sitemap revealed a list of URLs that appear to be for various positions of a presidential campaign.

They include, according to Business Insider:

Stand with farmers

Stand with veterans

Cuba

Protect 2nd Amendment

Repeal Obamacare

Stand with Israel

No net neutrality

Cut taxes

Balance budget

Stop ISIS

Strong military

American dream

National security

Tax reform

The Rubio tax plan: simplify, invest, grow (video)

Government is crashing the internet party

Country (video)

Worst negotiator (video)

Dreams (video)

Iran

Protecting life at every stage

Another URL was called "worst negotiator" and could be a video attacking President Barack Obama on his administration's negotiations with Iran on its nuclear program.
