Does anyone know anything about the 'Empowered' comic? I remember bumping into it briefly before and writing it off as some creepy dude's excuse to indulge his latex/exhibitionism kink (much like El Goonish Shive does w/transformation). Right now I'm at work and I'm afraid to google it.

It began as a bunch of fetish commissions that the author got, and his reaction to them. He takes a joke character designed for bondage and thought about how such a character would actually exist. Or something like that.

It's not a great comic, but I enjoy it for what it is.

The early volumes are 100% cheesecake, but around volume 4 he starts experimenting with longer, more persistent characters. Around the time Mindf__k is introduced.

Not necessarily the art in this, but the other work that Adam Warren's done. I think the problem is that it really looks better in black-and-white. With color, it doesn't come off quite as well. Also, after watching the review, the impression I get is that Adam Warren can only do '80s-era cyberpunk manga and that 's it. You probably could've changed the names and you would have never guessed that this was about the Teen Titans.

Taste is subjective. If you like it, I can't tell you you're wrong. I personally find it very unappealing, but I can't say it's poorly-executed.

And yeah, not sure why I deleted this from my post, but I was going to say something to the effect of a western colouring style not working with a heavily anime-inspired lineart style. Or at least, this colouring style doesn't work with this lineart style. It just makes everything look bulbous. Of course some of that comes from the lineart, what with corpseguy having the biggest bust of any of the not-Titans, but the colours do not do it any favours.

At least I know I'm not alone. It reminds me of Gen-13 which all my friends were raving about back in the day and I simply could not read because goddamn look at that GIS page.

But yeah, I know it's personal taste here - I absolutely cannot stand some recent art styles. Look at Power Pack, for example. Here's issue 1 from back in the mid 80's:

When you're a child, you think it's great, because you don't know how cheesy and predictable it is yet. I did German at school, and most of it was spent watching Inspector Rex. They've also got some terrible/amazing/terrible spinoffs, "Rex in Rome", as well as "Baby Rex."
The show usually featured a really obvious evil aryan villain, and a lame schlubby fat guy red herring. Surprise! Turns out the really obvious evil blonde nazi looking guy did it! All the time!

The series received enormous popularity and was aired in more than 100 countries worldwide.

The series' discontinuation in October 1998 came as Horst Tappert had reached the age limit he had set himself.[citation needed] Horst Tappert is the only German actor who has ever had fan clubs abroad including the Netherlands and France.[2]

In France Derrick is known as Inspecteur Derrick; in Italy, the show is called L’ispettore Derrick. In Chinese it is known as Dé li kè.

And before that he's mentioned he used to do a similar thing on several trek forums. So he's been at this a very long time.

But that's not really surprising given that his main focus is Star Trek, a franchise that's been around for ages and has had this kind of attention paid to it since the 60's. People mostly remember the decades of praise but a large number of Trekkies were very vocal about what they didn't like.

Komissar Rex is endearing comparing to the Portuguese spin off, called Inspector Max.

Kommissar Rex had the elaborate plot of "This was a bomb squad dog, his owner died, so he moved in with the detective". Inspector Max would balk at the idea and decided to give the inspector a large family and the dog is randomly found in the street. Bachelorhood, complexity of characters? No gently caress that, the dog just wants to be a cop. The inspector character, who 85% of the time has this expression, even when listening to a sexual assault description or a murder of any creature younger than World War II, engages crimes in a way that would make Hawaii Five-O (Modern version), look like loving Miss Marple or Murder She Wrote in terms of demanding intelligence from the audience. The dog is barely trained and does only his investment on already weakened or surrendering villains, with constant tales of several dogs behind the scenes attacking several cast members.

One of the episodes was set at a jail they cleared out to do scenes there, and there was a scene between a prisoner and our friend, Ersatz Gwynplaine Not-Mauser having a fist fight through the courtyard and a cell. The cell ends with a struggle on a bed, where either the former occupant or the set designer decided to lay down some cheesecake next to the bed that included, for some reason, a scene of a woman getting poo poo on her mouth. The tragedy of Adam Warren's art style is that it's too anime for western comic fans and too western for anime fans. He is in this weird place where both sides don't like it. But Empowered is such a good damned comic. It can be funny, heartbreaking, sexy, and scary as all hell within the same volume. It just doesn't get a fair shake from most folks. It is in that same category as Transformers More Than Meets the Eye and Afterlife With Archie. The fans of it adore it. The critics adore them. They still don't get gently caress all sales out of it. Everyone would rather buy more stupid Marvel and DC books where even the good teams loving either get jerked around (Batwoman), or seem to be milking it to the point they aren't writing for the trades any more but hardback omnibuses! (Everything Bendis does, Fables.)

Those comics I mentioned so need more love. A shame most of the people this thread is about largely just cover things that suck rear end because they so deserve more notice. Empowered isn't for everyone but it's goddamned fantastic for anyone who has any self esteem issues whatsoever. Or wants a cynical take on superheroes but doesn't want something outright vile like that Garth Ennis series I recall him doing.

In a way it's a lot like Evangelion. Most people go in thinking its one thing, then it quickly subverts the whole damned thing. Except our heroine is an adult who wants to be a hero. But she has even less self esteem than Shinji does. Luckily she tries hard and has people who love and care about her because she is a good person. And she has basically saved the world on a half dozen or so occasions at this point. And has earned the respect of NOT BATMAN who chooses to wear a French Maid outfit when he beats the poo poo out of everyone. And the NOT JOKER in this series is one of the scariest goddamnned villains in fiction. Imagine if Joker had the powers of that eternally burning wizard from Planescape Torment. And his preferred form of killing was skull loving. Terrifying as hell. Also Cthulhu but not is trapped in a belt on our heroine's coffee table and likes bad tv. And loves her best friend who because of what he is knows when and how she dies. :smith:

Also our heroine goes to Hell to help someone who basically treated her like poo poo for most of the series.

This series is so goddamned good.

Edit:
It doesn't actually show any nudity so I am not sure I could call it porn. It's got sex in it and fetishy stuff but less than Cinemax late night honestly. If you are reading this for porn you have probably gone to the wrong place outside of it not being misogynistic and hateful as most actual porn seems to be. And it's audience seems to want out of their wank material male or female targeted/created. I am not sure this thread or any thread really wants to try to figure out or discuss that pile of worms. Starship Troopers: Roughneck Chronicles was a surprisingly good show. How come more people haven't covered Starship Troopers? It was a miniz craze in the late 90s, with a good movie and a decent tv series, and its been popular enough to have three sequels and an OVA ripoff based on the film version and the book, respectively. The only internet critics I've seen touch it are Mike J and Decker Shadow. By the way, check that second guy out. There's another thing to consider - Australia is not a huge creator of content. We do create content, and we do have a content law similar to Canada (I think it's 55% content) but we've got something like 7% of the US' population. So we import a lot of TV and movies. BBC stuff goes to ABC (our public broadcasting, government funded), American stuff usually goes to commercial television because it's more expensive and commercial channels are more likely to pay for licensing, and SBS (also public broadcasting, but it has ads now unfortunately) takes most of the subtitled and/or sexy stuff. I'm not sure how frequently the average Australian watches subtitled content, but the average Australian most definitely watches non-Australian content on a regular basis.
All of this is just free-to-air TV. I've never had cable.

Uh, from what I recall from my German class, it was usually the evil guys who were sleazy. The worst I saw was a paedophile room set up where they were going to film a kid, but nothing graphic was shown (the child was rescued before anything happened), an evil guy grabbing a ballet teacher's breast, and just some evil soap opera level making out/tame sex stuff between the evil man and the evil women villains they usually had.
Violencewise I don't remember anything that outrageous. In terms of content it was about the same as The Bill (although apparently Mickey got raped on that show, which I found out when I was trying to find a specific episode of The Bill for one of the two gay cop things I reviewed.)

He's a fairly standard critic, but he's covered a lot of interesting sf and horror films on his channel.

Roughneck Chronicles was really good, and its an awful shame it got canned in the final stretch before it could finish properly. Seriously, it just ends about three quarters into the final Campaign arc on Earth.

Its amazing how hard it seems to be for comic book artists to draw children

It can be really hard for artists with only basic training to draw body types other than the default they learned. Check out Medieval and Renaissance pictures of the Madonna and child and see how many Baby Jesuses are basically midgets with weird heads.

That really sucked, the show literally ends with the bugs sending in another wave to earth and the heroes screwed. The show wasn't perfect, but I quite liked it. My only real gripes are with the spotty first campaign, where they were still trying to figure out if they were going for a more childish or more adult tone for the show. You get some downright awful lines like "Really deep doo-doo!" alongside episodes where Carth Onasi's squad gets murdered by arachnids. And I suppose Dizzy's voice actress bugs me, as well, but that's one mediocre va amongst a really solid cast.

Interesting video on superheros by Kyle

E: I learned more about the MCU and superhero movies than any musing from CD on how "bad" the MCU is and how I should not like these bad movies which are killing the art that is cinema
