Thanks Ants posted:$150 an hour is also not 'gently caress you' enough as a contracting rate. The place I used to work at preferred to go with a company that charged $600 an hour, two hour minimum. They saw nothing wrong with calling them for anything, from running a network drop 10 feet or installing a new switch. But the comptroller would balk at having to spend $10 on a new mouse. After I left, they started calling me to come in and do things. I would quote them the same price and they would decline.

Not a ticket, but at the end of every month, we take our paper files that we created for our new clients, scan them into a database, then annotate them with the relevant data for future use. It's my job to scan and file the files away. I've tried beating it into my coworkers heads that handing me files with staples in them makes this job a lot harder, due to needing to hunt through the files and remove the staples. For some reason only the people on the payroll side don't seem to get it. You want to hand me a file with paper clips in it? Go right ahead. You want to hand me a file with binder clips in it? Sure, be my guest. You want to hand me a file filled with stapled pages? Go gently caress yourself. You want to hand me a file filled with staples in corners other than the upper left? Eat a bowl of hell, you bastard! You want to hand me a file with 300 pages in it, with more than a dozen staples spread around in all 4 corners, with those irritating low-profile tiny staples the MFP has loaded into it that I can't find until the document goes through the scanner and has a few pages shredded and crumpled? I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN AND GUT YOU LIKE A FISH! WITH YOUR OWN SHREDDED FILE!!!

We finally got forced to transition from Postini spam to Google Spam and pretty much everything went wrong along the way, as expected. Google's password requirements meant a lot of people had to call us to reset their password as their old Postini password was simply wasn't valid and they couldn't reset it themselves. Some server on their end was trying to dump mail to a non-functional server on our side so lots of email just went poof. Today I had a very old person (listed as retired) call us having a fit because a link in an email was coming up blocked. Looked at the reason and it's because the page has a virus on it. Turns out he had dug this message out of his spam because "it came from such & such at a law firm and I want to read want she sent." Trying to explain to him that it was a message produced by a virus through her email account went right over his head and he was legit pissed at me that I wouldn't let him read that webpage.

I was going through a pile of lovely laptops that we have laying around because nobody gives a poo poo. I find one that says it shut down from being too hot, diagnostics say the CPU fan is not responding properly. I look up the service tag, warranty expires 4/13/2015. Oh, drat, better talk to Dell tonight. Go into the chat, Dell rep looks it up, says warranty expired 4/12/2015. Says it's a time zone issue and the page displays in GMT time zone, the warranty actually expired on 4/12 midnight local time. He then said I could contact the sales department to further assist me in resolving the issue. I told him it sounded like a scam and that I definitely would not like to contact the sales department. I got the chat log and he said "when did the system report the error" after I had disconnected.

Yeah, he was likely directing you to the sales department so you could renew the warranty, but when you pushed he was likely about to fight for you and get a workorder to get it fixed. Be nice to your service reps If that's one thing I've learned is to be nice. Sometimes you get a didly dumbfuck, other times you get a guy who really wants that 5/5 survey score

Oh well. He'll either email (or someone will go into chat again) and we can pretend like we got disconnected or he won't and we'll just call it a loss. It's a lovely laptop that nobody even remembered we had. e: I still think it was 100% bullshit to say the warranty date on the website is not actually the warranty date. I've looked up printers before and they have the correct date.

Usually if you get a Dell rep that isn't helpful the best thing to do is just try again. You will get a new rep and they most likely will help you out. A day after is usually not a big deal. Tell them that it happened on Friday and you didn't have time to get to contacting them right away due to other issues.

Angry weather girl comes stomping in. [News Director] said you put this camera back in rotation even though he told you not to. It's broken and it ruined my shoot. What camera is that? It's P1. He said that it was broken and he told you not to put it in rotation. I didn't put P1 up there. P1 is sitting over there in pieces. That's P7. Well, he said he told you not to put this one in rotation and you did it anyway. What's it doing wrong? It won't focus and half of my shots are ruined. He told me to not put P1 in rotation. I'm fixing it now. That's P7, this is an unrelated issue to P1. Whatever, let me see if I can salvage any of this. Ticket posted:User complains that camera P7 does not autofocus.

Is there a legit place to find an ISO of the Windows XP installation disc with SP2 already included? I have a vanilla windows XP disc and a valid license for XP but the compuiter I am trying to fix just will not let me install windows from the disc I have. I'm hoping there will be better luck with an XP SP2 install.

It's the product key you have to pay for. As long as you don't download an already-unlocked version of the software or a product key/keygen for the software, it should be perfectly legal to do. larchesdanrew posted:Angry weather girl comes stomping in. I was also thinking that I somehow missed OS K entirely. Was it any good? So here's another weird thing that just happened. Some end user sends mail to a guy on my team complaining of spam and slowness on her machine. So he responds to her with the usual (when did this start, try this, etc.), copying:
So I get why he would copy the helpdesk- it would automatically create a ticket that he could snag. Less effort than copying-and-pasting. But… why go up two levels of management in two different orgs? Well, whatever, maybe this user is a particularly hot potato, customer-service-wise, so he's alerting us, maybe, but normally he'd create a separate thread with all the gory details. Anyway, the whole campus has seen a surge in spam, and I don't think the tech is aware yet, so I reply, but fork the thread, responding only to the tech and the end user, telling them that it's a campuswide problem right now. I leave all the managers out of it, because they have no reason to care at this point, and I don't copy the helpdesk because it's just an offhand comment and I don't want to create a new, duplicate ticket. The tech responds to me with more or less a "boy howdy, I've seen a lot of spam too" message, leaves the end user off the thread, and copies the helpdesk, creating a duplicate ticket. Can't figure out his thought processes here.

A co-worker went out... ... and my boss deleted entire groups in Google Apps when he thought he was deleting the co-worker from the group membership. I know his rationale, he has AD on the brain, but Google Apps doesn't :-( But yeah, my co-worker who fell asleep a bunch of times daily and was a poor performer anyway is now gone, leaving me as sysadmin and helpdesk until they hire a new helpdesk guy. I closed so many goddamn tickets that he left open, untouched, unaddressed, and un-updated, I am so glad he is some other company's problem right now. Assholes, idiots and morons, that's what I have to deal with. All desktops of all models that are brought in and connected in a single specific one of our dozens of video rooms fail to boot. All desktops inside and outside all our other video rooms work perfectly fine. "We must test more desktops in this room! What are the capabilities of the desktops used in this room? Can you try a few more desktops in this room?" These are the questions I get AFTER I point out that "Hey, maybe you fuckers should take a look at the video conference equipment in this room?" This is a case that has taken WEEKS because nobody will admit that the video equipment might be faulty.

the provider for the fibre there says 'no issues found' so I'm driving three hours to replace the Draytek Vigor router there to see if it makes a difference - is it likely to be the router ? I can log into the UI and it works fine, the data graphs are showing nothing unusual.
