You'd think Wisconsin would have a hockey team because it's so loving cold here all of the time, but we don't, so I don't watch hockey. The Admirals don't count. And neither do the Blackhawks, because Illinois sucks Stayed home sick yesterday and today. Haven't called in sick in like two years at least, and I feel lovely about it anyway. On the plus side, I managed to blow through the entire season of the new Daredevil show on Netflix.

If he'd pointed the gun anywhere remotely near the police at that point he'd probably be dead now, instead of in jail.

Denton goons (and I know there's several of us) need to hit up Recycled Books - it's 4 or 5 stories of books, videos, CDs, records, etc in an old opera house, and it's an absolute must stop for anyone in Denton. They have a much more eclectic selection than Half Price Books, though HPB is also awesome. I've spent entire days in Recycled Books and dropped hundreds of dollars. That said, unless I'm just browsing, I usually head to Amazon and look for the cheapest used copies. Cable is EASY - the cable TV service enters the house through one of the garage walls, so it'd just require a splitter (I've already had to splice in new cable in the attic directly above the garage due to rodent damage, so there's already a coupler in the attic). Getting ethernet out there would be a total oval office, since it's clear across the house from all the networking stuff, with high ceilings and a low roof in the den. Might be easier to just run cat5e along the outside of the house. There's no wifi signal out there, and I'd like to eventually add an IP-based sprinkler controller anyway. T568A or T568B for home gigabit with CCA twisted pair cat5e? Longest run is about 150 ft, and will cross romex (cross, not run alongside) at a couple of spots. The CCA is debatable actually, I stripped the poo poo out of some wires and only found copper. And I do plan to add a whole house surge protector at the breaker panel pretty soon. I've only got one port wired so far, and went with A. I have absolutely no clue which is better, or if it even matters. I just noticed all of the keystone jack packaging had both printed on them, and my punchdown block also had both standards printed on it. I just like the letter A better than B. Also uh, suggestions on a cheap corded (120V) drill? One that isn't Ol' Sparky? I got 2 holes drilled before the cordless one poo poo itself, and the hole saw barely made a dent in the 2x6 I was trying to go through. I think I got about half an inch into the 2x6 before it died. A new battery for this piece of poo poo drill costs more than the entire drill did. Need to get some new bits too, these are so dull that 1.5 inch could use them for sounding and not bleed (though I got a nasty 2nd degree burn when I pulled the drill back and the bit brushed my arm). The cordless one has started spitting sparks as well, though not nearly as bad as the ~30 year old corded one we have (which shocks the gently caress out of you if you even touch it while plugged in, and instantly trips any GFCI circuit it's on). I agree completely - the stupid motherfucker evading & popping rounds into the air deserved to be rammed up against a wall with a P71 & is very lucky to be alive. Unfortunately, this isn't 1856 or whatever where you can do those things... everything is recorded, analyzed and monitored. When I watch these videos I see an astonishingly equal level of stupidity spread between the cops and the robbers. One performs extremely ignorant actions against the law, and the other performs extremely ignorant actions against other laws. Don't get me started on SWAT.

I didn't think it did either. There's no backwards compatibility beyond CAT5 to worry about, and it seems like B focuses on backwards comparability with POTS. We do have POTS - sort of - it's via fiber, but verizon abandoned all of the copper here almost 15 years ago - but it's on its own set of wiring (plain old 4 wire cable), and only in the master bedroom, kitchen, and [never used] living room. I'm actually planning on yanking the living room jack - that room is on the same wall as my desk - and punching a hole in my bedroom wall to pass it through, since I actually do use my fax modem now and then. I'll drop a single network jack in there to replace it. I got the impression "A" was the standard for residential, with B being commercial, but gently caress it, as long as there's no crosstalk and everything matches up... it looks like only a couple of pairs are swapped between A and B anyway. Speaking of, while in the attic, I noticed someone had repurposed some of my old CAT5 to tie into the phone line for the burglar alarm.. with a roll of electrical tape. The alarm has been on GSM monitoring for over 10 years, for fucks sake! It still goes into apeshit mode if you unplug the phone cable from it (siren goes off and it sets a trouble code, and kills every phone jack in the house), despite having a GSM transmitter. It also goes into same apeshit mode when the power is out more than a couple of hours, since we have fiber phone service, and the battery backup for it dies after a few hours. And since the GSM transmitter is wired into the siren circuit, that means the cops show up for anything that even causes the siren to chirp. I really want to rip the system out and redo it myself - I have a newer version of the same system (house has a DSC Power832, I have a Power1832 from my old apartment), except mine isn't installer locked, and I know the insides and outs of DSC Power series systems. And it would take about 5 minutes to wire up the GSM transmitter to it.. </rant> I think I might go drop $30-50 on a cheap drill tomorrow. I'm sick of only being able to drill 2-3 holes every 24 hours,

some texas redneck posted:it seems like B focuses on backwards comparability with POTS. [...] Nah. Literally the only difference is that the orange and green pairs are switched. B: O/W O G/W B B/W G Br/W Br A: G/W G O/W B B/W O Br/W Br The electrons don't care about what color the jacketing on the pair is, as long as they're twisted correctly. America tends to use B, and I've been told that A is more popular in Europe. If you want to make a crossover cable (for 100mbps and down, mind you; GbE uses all 4 pairs) you do A on one side, B on the other. Those speeds only use the orange and green pair (one for transmit, one for receive) so you switch them for crossover. The POTS pair (blue) is the same between both standards.

I'm sure it's got cheap-rear end plastic gears etc. inside, but so far it hasn't given me any trouble. It even has a nice and chunky keyed chuck, none of that keyless nonsense. The front grip has a built-in flashlight, which I basically never use. As far as gimmicks go, I guess it's OK. My only complaint is that the hammer drill function is basically useless, it just increases the noise level. And the switch between normal and hammertime was a bit loose. Nothing a fat blob of hot glue couldn't handle, though.

Also BADLY need new drill bits (these are hand me downs that are over 25 years old), but I'm sure a couple of them won't cost much. I have a 1.75" hole saw - tried to use it on a fresh battery, and got about half an inch down before the battery died. I have a slight aversion to Bosch ever since our Bosch dishwasher tried to burn down the house (caught on fire, after 2 recalls had been performed), also an aversion since our Bosch oven has required $500+ repairs every year since it was new, until they quit making parts (it now takes about an hour to warm up beyond lukewarm, and trips the breaker if you use the convection function). I really want to rip that piece of poo poo oven out and replace it with a plain old GE. A basic one that has no electronics beyond a clock/timer. The oven lights randomly work when they want, and what side lights up (two bulbs in each oven) depends on how you look at it. Cleaning mode doesn't work at all, anything over 300F doesn't work on the top oven, anything under 350 doesn't work on the bottom oven, and the cooling fans will run nonstop for days until you kill the power. The only upside to Bosch kitchen appliances is they're pretty and quiet (you can't hear the dishwasher running, unless it's on fire again - I've opened it many times not realizing it was running, and caught a face full of slightly above cool water in the face). e: goddamnit, my rear end has returned to firehose duty. I texted my boss at Jet's saying I probably wouldn't be in a few hours ago, I'm fully expecting a text saying "find a replacement" when he wakes up. Like I'll be awake at that hour.. or like I give a poo poo. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 09:27 on Apr 16, 2015 |

I haven't tried it, but I saw a cool trick for using larger-diameter hole cutters: get the hole started so that outer cut is just defined, then drill one or more smaller holes right on the edge of outer cut. That way the chips have somewhere to go, and the teeth won't get gunked up.

I buy Milwaukee or Makita for anything I'm going to beat up. My sawzall is actually about due for replacement... I bought it in like 2010 and have torn apart half of a house and probably five cars with it, not too surprised. I am really not nice to it, I usually stay 100% on the throttle and give it a quick jerk to unstick it if the blade jams, while it's trying to be a jackhammer. Still works great, but occasionally something slips inside and the motor spins even though the blade is jammed. ... actually I should look on ereplacementparts tonight and see if they carry whatever part is broken. I'm assuming it's some kind of torque limiting clutch or knurled metal shaft pressed into a plastic gear that I've absolutely rooted.
